I know theres a section for this, a but I figured I'd get the most opinion here.

I have ProComp Xterrains, 33x12.50.
They are a directional tire, very similar to Baja claws, and I know there is a reason.
The thing i wonder is, though, The tires while mounted in the "right" direction has a tread pattern like this when going forward -- ^
Why? the pattern on the dirt looks the opposite. It looks like they wouldn't work as well.

To me thinking about this, it seems like you would have better traction with them mounted the other way. "Backwards". That way, they would be more of a "scoop" and grip more.

Now, On to the reason for them being this way. Could there be some special factor in the tread design that sheds water away from the middle of the tire, and by reversing them would suck water into the middle of the tire, in effect? Would I see any improvement or an advantage by reversing the tread pattern?

if you flipped then around theyd be good for mudding...more of a scoop and grab action rather than a cutting through action.

you are partially right. they are designed to grab the terrain, and throw the loose stuff out of the tread. if you flip them around in mud they lose thier self cleaning abilites and become big ol slicks. same goes for sand and dirt, if it grabs the terrian and there is nowhere for the loose stuff to go you lose the effectivness of the tread pattern. i doubt you'd see much difference on pavement, but off road you will notice it.

i'll tell you what my dad told me when i asked questions like this:
"they made it that way for a reason, thats what engineers are for"
