Hey guys, I need a little help, about two days ago somebody broke in to my jeep smashing the back and side window, my air system and tools were stolen. Do you have any suggestions for security systems or any security devices that would protect my jeep? Thanks for the help...

I feel your pain. My jeep was broken into 6 times in 5 years while I was at college. First time, I was living in the dorms so I had a lot of stuff in the xj. Tools, jackets, CD's, mp3 player, etc., etc... $3000 worth of stuff the first time. I wised up and stopped keeping stuff in there.
I finally got a clifford Matrix 10 Alarm. Cost me about $350 installed with a proximity sensor. It's kind of a pain in the ass. If it's too windy and the jeep moves the motion sensor sets it off. I finally just cut the wires to the horn. At least it gave me remote locks and started kill.
At the very least Wire up a little blinking light and do a fuel pump kill switch. There are some writeups floating around how to do this.

a gun and a rottweiler.
Seriously, no alarm system can stop a thief especially when they smash a window. Alarms might help deter but will never protect.
Recommendations:
- look into a Alarm that has remote notification such as the Viper 791XV. The transponder can beep at you when someone is f'in with your Jeep. Range is only up to a 1/4 mile though. There are other alarms out there.
- Protection for your belongings, get a Tuffy Security box for the rear of your XJ that has a lock.
- If you have a decent tool box, drill holes in the bottom and mount the tool box onto the floor. That way the only way to remove the tool box is by unlocking the lid.
- bullet proof glass?

I still like my idea of wiring the alarm to a tear gas canister. I'm wiring my new alarm to the strobes I have in the head and tail lights. Won't protect it any more, but might deter a few when they see my jeep light up like a christmas tree. Might even wire up my flood lights too it so when the alarm goes off the jeep becomes a spotlight, lighting up anyone who is breaking in.

Actually Josh I have to partially disagree with you on the alarm. If I had an alarm back when mine was broken into I woudln't have lost my stereo equipment, just a window. It all depends on the theif. An alarm will scrare off a casual theif and even a seasoned theif who's only out to empty out the stuff from a car. Of course that's only true in an area where people will hear the alarm.
The night that my stereo stuff (and CB!) was stolen nine other vehicles were hit. They stopped when they popped the window of a Benz to get the stereo in it - the alarm went off.
Do I have an alarm? No. But I also still don't have a subwoofer box and make it a point to de-face my stereo every time I park these days.
Edit: Nothing will stop professional car thieves... But what sort of pro is looking for old beat up XJ's anyway!

I don't know what to tell you to keep people out of your XJ, but I do have a solution for preventing the vehicle from getting stolen. A GPS tracking system with Ignitionkill/starter kill capabilities (among MANY other capabilities)...Check out my website...www.canthidethis.com I will give a SCREAMING deal to my fellow XJers, if you call me at the number on the website, I'll tell you more.

just as you said, its all about the theif and the location. Hell, I had a theif bust the window out of my Exploder to steal my tools....even though the truck was completely unlocked.
I was basically sayin that an alarm will never completely "protect". deter? maybe.
