I was tempted to do the same, but it woulda been at least another $500 and i cant justify using a TIG when ill be workin on bumpers and axles and stuff. although i love lying down beads on a nice TIG machine whenever i can...

I learned on TIG down at my school's MiniBaja shop, so thats really all I know. I don't know why, maybe its cause I like the control a little better, but I like TIG better than MIG.

Cheapest place I found a 165 TIG was for $1250, ouch.

Sweet, I'm looking at getting a welder for myself this christmas too. I want to start making my own bumpers and exhaust and whatnot. I'll probably jump for a 110v welder though so I can use outside of my apartment in my "backyard".

That mini baja school wouldn't be URI, would it be? My buddy is in that program right now and has been for a few years.

Nice, welders are fun for the hole family, that's what I told my wife when I brought mine home.

No, Northeastern University. I've seen URI people at competitions before though.

I suck at welding a radius so this just constructive criticism, But that is a little "Cold" looking. might wanna hit that again. Go slow. Or crank the heat & Wire up

Thats a nice weld right there, can see the heat was even (bluing along edges) ...I havnt played with tig. Looks like a good strong uniform weld to me.

That top weld doesn't look bad to me. I can see clear heat marks on the bumper and some on the tube. It looks like the weld was cleaned up with a wire brush before the picture was taken. Its hard to fake a TIG weld, for being on a bumper I wouldn't worry about it. If it was on a knuckle or a main structural part of the rig I would want to go over it and add some more metal.

At work I use a Thermal Arc TIG/Stick air cooled unit (weights 30 to 40lbs plus the tank) that is set up for aluminum and a giant (400lbs+) AirCo water cooled TIG/stick that gets used on steel and cast iron. Going home to my 120V flux core MIG is disapointing.

OP: That is a very nice christmass present.
