Mud tires have horrible grip on wet and icy roads. This might also help you grip tree roots.

I've heard though, now, they make compond snow tires that are just as goo if not better than studded tires for ice...(for regular cars at least)

Personally studded tires are shit and they ruin our roads. They may be cheaper, but to me, they are a complete waste...If its that bad, don't drive......unless you drive a lifted XJ. :)

Pulling studs is easy. If you go to a tire shop and ask them to order a stud removing awl they can get them from there local tire supply dealer.

Well if the studs aren't a problem Siping sucks my brother had my 35's siped as a surprise when i got back from Iraq... Surprise chunks started coming off after 1 trip to the rubicon good way to destroy some brand new tires.

Siping should only be done on the large center blocks, that way it minimizes chunking. Well, that and not spinning them like a drag racer on rough terrain.
I've had a couple different sets of tires siped, never had a chunking issue.
