Rockin' XJ Jamboree
Johnson Valley, CA
Nov 18-19, '06

Come join us for an XJ/MJ run at one of the premier 4wheeling locations in California. Johnson Valley, home of the Hammer Trails, has the best hard-core trails around, plus moderate and easy trails, miles and miles of dirt roads for exploring, and even some sand dunes. So whether you're a JV regular or have never been there before, have a dedicated rock crawler or a stock XJ, come out and join us for a fun weekend of wheeling.

Saturday Night Dinner and Raffle
Saturday evening a dinner of burgers and brauts will be provided to all participants. Cost of dinner is $6 per person. After dinner there will be a raffle, with proceeds going to Friends of Panamint Valley and the SoCal Chapter of NAXJA. Friends of Panamint Valley is the lead organization in the fight to reopen Surprise Canyon. Raffle tickets will be available onsite.

Dinner around 6:30 pm
Raffle around 7:30 pm

Location and Camping Information
Main camp will be on Means Dry Lake in the Johnson Valley OHV area. There are no camping fees, and also no facilities, so this is dry camping. Portable toilets will be provided. Campfires are allowed and encouraged, but burning pallets is prohibited. Means Dry Lake is roughly 4 miles down a graded dirt road from HWY 247, and is accessable to all types of RV's, with lot's of open flat area.

T-Shirts
Sm, Med, Large, and X-Large $16
XXL and XXXL $18

T-shirt orders need to be recieved no later than Oct 15th. A very limited number of T-shirts will be available onsite. Please send your name, shirt size, and quantity with your order.

T-shirt orders including payment, and payment for dinner tickets, can be submitted by PayPal to rocknxj@pacbell.net and you can pay using a credit card through PayPal. If you don't have a PayPal account e-mail the order to rocknxj@pacbell.net and an e-mail will be sent to you with a PayPal link to use.

Directions to Johnson Valley
Johnson Valley is approximately 45 miles east of Interstate 15 on Hwy 247. From most directions, exit Interstate 15 at Bear Valley Rd in Hesperia. Go east on Bear Valley Rd and then on Hwy 18 for about 20 miles to Lucerne Valley. At Lucerne Valley, continue straight on Hwy 247. After crossing a four way stop, continue straight on Hwy 247, which is also Old Woman Springs Rd, for about 22 miles to Boone Rd. Look for a sign at Boone Rd saying Johnson Valley OHV Area, Boone Rd. Turn left onto Boone Rd, which is dirt, and go about three miles to an intersection where the main traffic goes to the left. Turn left, the road drops through a gulley, and continue another mile to the dry lake bed. Main camp will be at the dry lake bed.

For additional information contact Richard Gauthier by PM to Goatman, or e-mail at rocknxj@pacbell.net, or simply post on this forum.

We may post up some trails as we see how many will be there. The trails will be run on an informal basis, so no official trail schedule due to permiting issues, but we will be ready. Post up what you'd like to run and we'll plan accordingly. We will check for equipment appropriate for the trail to be fair to everyone running that trail, but one of the purposes of this run is to give new folks a chance to experience Johnson Valley.

Easy is a relative term...Ryan (Rawbrown) Ron and myself managed to make it look...um......interesting? after a case (or two?) of brew and nobody bringing any spares last time we got together!
Gotta' love it!

Moderate at best. I think I'll go for something tougher this time out, last year was my shake down run. Ethan and I will be there as well as my eldest son, Richard and his wife Cheryl. I'll be splitting the time between the XJ and the bike. Put me down for 5 shirts, I'll get the sizes and the PayPal to you in the next few days.

Thanks Richard

Please use e-mail and PayPal to order t-shirts and dinners. I winged it last year, but I'd like to get a better idea for shirts and dinners this year. I'd also like to not have to spend so much time collecting money this year like I did last year, so please place your order and pay in advance. PayPal will accept credit cards if you're a little short on cash at this moment.

The ordering information is in this thread above.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

I have never been to an NAXJA "anything" before. I for sure want to order a T-shirt (X-large) and I will talk to my friends tomorrow about going along with me and paypal tomorrow (Saturday 14th) a final order and dinner $$. A question: My XJ is dead stock and not equipped at all for wheeling, but my 69 CJ5 is a much better trail rig. Since I would take my motorhome and trailer one of the Jeeps, would I be boo'd out of camp if I brought the CJ and not the XJ. PS my budy has a tricked out Wrangler so I'm asking for him too!

It is basically an open event for enthusiest driving different rigs but it will mostly be XJs out there. CJ will be no problem at all.

We use CBs but trust me, 12 hours to get one mile, you won't really need them too much.

Bring on your friends and your CJ, we're not exclusive around here, come on out and have fun. This run is a quasi-event, quasi-SoCal chapter event. We're not organizing enough to generate a permit, so the quazi nature. The raffle will benefit both Surprise Canyon legal fund and SoCal NAXJA. Basically, we're a bunch of friends meeting to go wheeling and have fun, and we're going to serve a dinner on Sat night and have a raffle.

I really don't see why not. The trail is wide and there will be many others in you same exact shoes. Take it easy and safe like you usually do and you should be fine.

Cal/Paul S can correct me if I am wrong, but last year it was done by 12 rigs in 6 hours with guys open in the front. Guys on 37s can do it in less than 10 minutes. I ran it a month ago and other than a section with some small loose boulders, you should be fine.

Will Speed Racer make it to JV in Nov?

What mysterious gadgets lurk within that sheetmetal?

Will that sheetmetal survive his first encounter with the unforgiving nature of JV's hardest trails?

How many gouges are those beautiful Champion wheels gonna have in them afterwards?

Will he slice and dice those Creepies like so many ProComps before?

Will Avery wake up one morning to find all his TRE's gone to spares?

Are those Superior stubs gonna be good enough to haul all that weight around?

And, most importantly, is his gay assed TJ gonna stay in the driveway from now on? :D

I guess we'll just have to be there and find out...

1.) The community spare.

2.) I may borrow him next weekend. I'm fresh out of interns.

3.) He's got the same narrow bastard size I'm running. Lucky me.

Ok Questions...

I have a bachelor party to plan and host on the 18th. Last min thing for a good jeeper bud. SO...

Anything going on fri night? I am thinking of just bringing the heep on a trailer (that way I dont have to worry about not being back in time sat no matter what pretty much happends), but I can only stay from fri noonerish till sat noonerish.

Is there a necc to have to be at the raffle, to claim any prices? If not can I still buy in?

Will there be any runs fri night? NIGHT THAT IS! not freakin 1am till 7am liek the last "Night run" I was invited to. lol

Oh and I wonder.. How could I combine 3-5 strippers, a trailer and a pole and a unofficial NAXJA event... Umm wonder how many family's will be there lol Mini 'Roxy bash"? :-) then I wouldnt have to miss any of it.... Goin to have to think about this one... Maybe a Uhaul, a pole and a nearby but not to close camp area....

October 27th, 2006, 09:29
I really don't see why not. The trail is wide and there will be many others in you same exact shoes. Take it easy and safe like you usually do and you should be fine.

Cal/Paul S can correct me if I am wrong, but last year it was done by 12 rigs in 6 hours with guys open in the front. Guys on 37s can do it in less than 10 minutes. I ran it a month ago and other than a section with some small loose boulders, you should be fine.

I'm a bit late seeing this thread.

Having tailgunned Claw last year with several rear locker only cars, I gotta say that there's a HUGE difference in how difficult this trail is when not locked up front. I would not recommend doing it without F&R lockers.

I didn't think of reflector tape, that's a good idea. I haven't found the taillights that I want yet.

I think I can get the winch installed, but won't have any shackle mounts front or rear. I guess a strap can be put around the tubing if needed. The dash is in and wired, but I won't have time for the aluminum to cover the top, so I might just duct tape across it. I may or may not have the CB hooked up.

What I will have is a skinny assed rig with 60's front and rear. :D

I have plenty left to do.......really, a very long list. All the rear axle mounts and links are still just tacked on, and the UCA mount needs gusseting. The fuel and brakes need to be plumbed. The rockers need to get plated. Winch fairlead needs a mount and so does the solenoid pack, and the winch leads aren't long enough to reach the battery. The power steering pump has to be replaced with the PSC unit I got with a smaller pulley, and the cooler installed. Since I need to get a different serpentine belt, I have to remove the AC compressor while I'm at it. I also need to build a t-case skid, run air locker lines, make seat belt tabs, install seats, belts, CB, something on the roof, etc, etc, etc.

Since I worked a deal with Eric to help do the wiring, it looks like I'll have a few lights. Do most buggies have rear running lights and brake lights?

The export market is huge for almonds as well as most nuts. Japan is willing to pay top yen to not only get the nuts, but to get the highest quality we grow. They get better nuts than you or I can buy in the grocery store...

& yes I'll bring a bunch of nuts to hand out to the nuts... You know, I might just have to make them a raffle prize. Oh Captain :phone:

For most part it sounds like every one is running modified xjs. What is out there for a stock xj sitting on 31's? A couple weekends ago I manuvered my way up and over Gold Mountain, only getting hung up in a couple of spots on the back side of the rock garden heading back up to the top of the mountain. Are the hammer trails good for spectators to tag along or is it to long of a trail?

I went last year in my 96 XJ with 2 inch BB and 245/75R16 MT/R's and mainly went around in the sand... I got there kind of late, so everyone was already out and about-

Is there a bunny slope run planned?

If you read the event info that has been posted we said there will be runs for everyone. I want to make it clear that I will make sure we have an easy run on Sat. I have the route already planned, and if I can't find someone knowledgeable of the area to lead it I will lead it myself. The plan is to finish the run at the top of one of the hard canyons so folks can walk down and watch the hard run rigs finish their trail.

One of the goals of this event is to provide opportunity for everyone. If you want to run extreme trails, hard, moderate, or easy, there will be a run. If you want to drive out and watch the hard run, you can do that, or if you want to ride with someone there are always empty seats.

This is a great time to get together with other XJ'ers, see old friends and meet new ones, and check out all the rigs. Last year we had 46 rigs, which was the largest XJ event we've had in SoCal. This year looks to have even more participants. We're going to have a good time.

I also hear we're going to have real good raffle. Winches, Beard seats, BFG tires, and more. We donated $2000 from the raffle last year to Friends of Panamint Valley, and hopefully this year we can do more.

See you there,

Lets see. the lowest alcohol content in any of my beers is 4.9% on the Dunkel. compare that to the butwiper and its one and a half times the alcohol.
The trappist is about 6.5, Wit 5.9, cream 5.25 and its smooth, Porter 5.25, and the red ale should be around 5.25. I might even add some honey and make it a honey red. That might be tasty... oh and the apricot mead is 13.125%. I'm hoping it clears up in time. its still a little cloudy but it taste great. Got something for everyone. from the Porter on the bitter side to the Dunkel on the malty and fruity side.

Puss...If its cheap your after then figure this.
a 30 pack of buttwipe is $20 at bevmo not including CRV or tax
It cost me at most $30 per 5 gallon batch for grain, hops, Yeast, bottled water and propane. If I reuse yeast from a previous batch then I can save $8.
on these kegs that I am bringing, I reused Yeast on most of them.
Now it gets fun. Your 30 pack of butwipe cost at least $0.67 a beer.
My 5 Kegs of homebrew cost me about $125 total plus my time which I have when I'm watching my son. There are 53.3 beers per 5 gallon Keg @ $25/keg.
Thats $0.47 a beer with more alcohol and better tasting. The cream ale is lighter in color and more flavor than any light beer and is 5.25%.
If you feel so inclined, throw $5 in a hat and have all the beer you want.:dunce:

Jes and I would let her manuever up the trail 15 minutes at a time, while partaking in frosty beverages, then move up when we lost sight of the tail lights. My plans have changed and I'm looking for an open seat for Thurs and/or Friday. I plan on taping a run or two or three or four.. :confused1 I heard that a group will be there during the week and will do the hammers And that I might be able to get a front seat.... **cough*cough* Captain Ron *Cough**

Someone is going to fab a camera mount that could attach to a roll bar. I have even used bungy cords to mount it to the dash.

I just would need to take a backpack to hold a couple of small cameras, inverter, tapes and a small cooler to hold lunch..

To make Thursday runs, I will go up there Wed..

Bueller.. Bueller...

Thanks,
Elias

Thursday is your best bet. Get there early, I'm sure we'll be able to get you onboard with someone.

I may not be your best choice. Your gear may not operate very well upside down. :D

:puke:no thanks... Not even Jaeger would have helped with my back last year. Yes, I f'ed my back up good on WB. Had to get a CT scan which showed some trauma to my L4 and L5. No breaks fortunatly but I occasionally step wrong and re injure it. So I will be a bit more carefull this year and try not to slide under Matts buggy while bouncing my ass off rocks. But keep the Jaeger away from me. It makes me violent.
And while I have been reprimanded for talking about drinking while wheeling. That must mean that there will be no drinking on the trail at all. So leave the booze and bud at camp and stick with barley flavored soda water.
I thought Jaeger was the drink of choice for that fall?

I regret to report that I will not be able to attend this year's JV event...

My father-in-law was injured at work and me and the wife are driving up to WA to visit the Friday before JV. We will probably be up there for a week or so and I intend to hit up Evan's Creek or Walker Valley. My wife feels bad about missing JV as well- she helped me get the XJ together for JV and all.

Take lots of pics for me and stay safe,

L8r,
Coullt

P.S. I really hate that I will miss Ryan's homebrew...that stuff is top notch if you ain't ever had it.

I am leaving for Johnson Valley Friday about noon. It should take me an hour to get there. Will there be some NAXJA members there yet?
