Ok guys. Looks like we are down to two choices.

Rattlesnake or Northwest Desert.

The first couple of days worth of posts decides it.

Details:

Where: Smiths, corner of Redwood and Lehi Main St on the south side. (exit 282 from I15) (See Map)
When: 8:30am, Leave by 9am.

OK the rest of the details,

Take exit 282 off of I15 onto lehi Main St. Head west through town, across the RR tracks, through the round about, across the river. Smiths will be on your left side at the light.
Please please be on time. We have alot of ground to cover and we need to leave as soon as we can. We want to run Rattlesnake before it gets too late.
It would be advised to fuel up before we leave. When I did the route, I used 1/2 tank total, but fuel consumption varies between our rigs..
Watch the weather. Out there it can either be really hot or super cold. With the way things are looking, we may run into a bit of snow.
Those with trailers: Don't unload at Smith's, we'll stop at fivemile pass to unload.
Any other questions please PM me.

gordon and myself are trying to figure out a way we can make it. rattlesnake sounds better, but both would be cool. need to find a trailer to haul the jeep on. i think bad things could happen if i tyr to drive it that far at hwy speed

You have a point Clint.. Maybe we should get an Idea on what the "noobs" are driving, stock or how modified the rigs are..:dunno:

Since this is a new folks run, a good dirt road, scenic ride is in order. I was going to suggest a trip up Ophir Canyon, it's an up and back trip, but the weather will dictate if the road is passable..

Now if all of our "new peoples" who sign up are driving slighty to heavily modified rigs, I have no problems running the snakes. But if we have just 1 stocker, then the snakes is probally not going to work. I know one of the goals of this run was to help show the new people just how capable a stock cherokee really is but I'm just not sure if Rattlesnake is the best place for that.

I agree that we need a listing of who exactly is coming and what they are driving since we now have a hard date for this.

I haven't been up Ophir canyon in a long time but most of it up there is private. We could go up to Jacob city from the Stockton side and then try and go down the bottom of Jacob city, but I have only done that on a 4wheeler. If need be I can scout both these locations out after the FF To get an idea of what we can do.

Man...you guys keep taking it in too many different directions.

I say again...we should either do a Northwest Desert Ghost town run or the Snakes.

those seemed to be the two most popular choices. Let's narrow it down to one of those.

Being late October I don't want to plan anything in the Mountains. It is just too risky of running into bad weather. It would be easier to plan ahead now so we don't have to change around later.

I am more into scenic drives, so if the desert has ghost towns my vote is for that one. The date is too far in advance for me to give a definite answer on whether I can go or not, with my work and all (military).

I've done rattlesnake and a stock TJ did it. So either one would essentially be fine with me.

I will keep you guys in touch to see if I am able to go. If there are any changes in the plan let me know via email nathaniel.fellows@hill.af.mil. I don't get on the site as much as I would like to.

Yes, rattlesnake is doable in a stock jeep.

However, this is a noob run. We very well will have stock vehicles with less experienced driver. Add rain or snow, some mud slick rocks and someone could end up bending some sheet metal. We want this to be a fun, enjoyable run.

We can do rattlesnake in the snow later:D

Ok...here is a thought. What if we do a two part day. We could hit the Tintic area and see some of the older mining towns that are around that area and then head up the back way to Five Mile pass and do Just Rattlesnake. The guys who feel uncomfortable with Rattlesnake could either A. Head home from there or B. Go around to the top of Rattlesnake and meet the group there Via the dirtroads in.

Don't worry. Such books are usually directed toward family trips in stock vehicles. They can be loads of fun.

By the way where are these trails located. Are they near the south end of the Oquirrhs or the west side Utah lake? Might be able to include them in the run.

Might be a fun place to explore.

Ok. Just have been doing some research.

Harker Canyon is just south of Vernon. An easy 4wd trail that goes into the Sheep Rock mtns it ends and an old mine with several buildings and an old tram.

weather depending I think this is something we could easily do and then hit Rattlesnake on the way home.

I've done this trail years ago, we did it the day after X-mas, plenty of snow, IIRC we only needed a strap once or twice. and I was driving a stock XJ.

Five-mile Pass is located on the southern portion of the Oquirrh Mountains and the northern Thorpe Hills on the Utah/Tooele County line. State Highway 73 bisects Fivemile Pass. To access Fivemile Pass from the east, take I-15 to Lehi, take exit number 285, turn right onto Highway 73. Follow 73 west for approximately 21 miles. You will travel through the communities of Cedar Fort and Fairfield

This is maybe too close to home. I don't want to come all the way back in and then all the way back out again. I'll see how things go-

Is it going to be possible to do either of these two runs and come out WITHOUT any body damage?? Running open w/31's-
Thoise pics look pretty gnarly, and though you mention that the rocks were optional-they also look plentiful.

I'm just getting the lift on as we speak, and after dropping that much money, skids and rails are just out of the question. Plus the wife wants me to have a safari rack with the spare up there, otherwise I'm just not cool like everybody else-

If you have any kind of lift you could blast through there easy with no damage. Last time we had a stocker or two. I seem to remember one bent rocker but it probably could have been avoided.

The other area though should be easy as pie...mostly gravel roads.

I have a rack that I am willing to part with. It is a Garvin. Let me know.

Thats what I'm fighting with her about, she wants me to have the rack, but I don't want one, cuz I want the roof for snowboards & bikes. I want the spare tire on a hinged holder on the back-they're just so dang expensive, because you need a bumper too.

Thinking about going to the junkyard(my disneyland), and ripping off a spare tire holder from an isuzu amigo/honda passport/etc. and dragging it over to a cherokee to see if something can be done. Planning on beefing up the bumper, but not replacing it. It's just gonna hold a 31"

Question: can a safari rack do a spare tire and snowboards/bikes??

That's great news on the body damage issue, I know if stockers can make it, then I can-

EricT
September 25th, 2006, 04:20
i know it can do bikes and snowboards, but can't remember how the rack for the snowboards fits.

from the looks of it, if you mount the snowboards foward enough, you can get your spare up there.

Just giving this thread a bump.
Still don't have a "final destination".
I like the idea of meandering thru the ghost town a few days before halloween- could call it a nooby-spook run, and also like DrMoabs idea of splitting the trip up into 2 runs, desert, and then rattlesnake.
The latter sounds good for me, I wanna see what my jeep is capable of. I think the OME stuff is riding a little stiff and needs to be broken in.

I'm pretty sure we decided on the 28th. I'm thinking maybe we need a "Chapter Event Coordinator" ??

We do need to get this back on track now that FF is over. Last I read it was going to be a scenic trip up to Harker Canyon then a trip over to Rattlesnake for those wanting? Or a trip up north through the old ghost towns Like Jeremy suggested, there are a ton of old mines and such around the tintics. I've spent alot of time over there. I'd be willing to check some of them out before the run. Any other suggestions? Anything up AF that would fit the needs of this run? Were running out of time and need to get rolling.

OK. I talked to Ryan this morning. The date has been set for October 28th.

We need to know from all the people that have stock vehicles, if they are OK trying Rattlesnake. It's been said here a stock rig can make it, but we want to make sure people are comfortable with it. Also we think that with as many people that are going to come we need to stick with 1 place or we will not have time to complete everything.. So either everyone runs Rattlesnake, or we do a scenic tour around that area, and once the "offical" run is over those wanting can fly through Rattlesnake or whatnot. We need more opinions on this. We have until Friday to decide all this to get it set. Only 2 weeks left.

Although a stocker can do it, Rattlesnake is kinda "pathetic" to do as a RUN, from my house it takes 20 minutes to get out there, and 3 minutes to run it.. Come on guys, this is the nOOb run, lets cater to that.

Although a stocker can do it, Rattlesnake is kinda "pathetic" to do as a RUN, from my house it takes 20 minutes to get out there, and 3 minutes to run it.. Come on guys, this is the nOOb run, lets cater to that.

That was my thoughts. I'd rather do a scenic relaxing drive after the FF :) Thats why I posted we could do the scenic relaxing stuff..then the folks that want to do rattlesnake can because we'll be in that area.

I agree with hearing from them as well. I'm just being the messenger as the good Dr is out on the road. We ALL just need to remember this is focused on getting to know new people and enjoying being outside the city. There will be plenty of time for some serious wheeling this winter and spring !

OK I think I've found a great tour we can go on. I'll see if I can get a map of the route I'm thinking, but it looks like a great time. I've driven most of it, but that was years ago. I'll see about checking it all out this weekend. It blends alot of scenic driving, old mining history and places you've probally never been. The route is mostly centered around the old mining town of Eureka.
This way, if you folks want to run the snakes after, you'll be right close to them. Cheers.

This is what I was expecting. An easy get to know you run, for people with stockers, and then afterwards, an optional run up rattlesnake-
Someone mentioned some dirt roads that bypass rattlesnake and still get you to the top? Sounds like rattlesnake can be on the agenda, and HOW you get there is optional-

I would also like to know from the wheelers, if planning to do rattlesnake, are recovery points going to be necessary??
I have a class 3 hitch with an extra pin, as I understand this can be used for recovery, and I have a manik brush guard that ties into the bumper brackets, and seems to be the same place that the tow hooks would go anyways-
Will this suffice if needed???

This is me and my opinion talking, If you are going to take your XJ(or ANY vehicle) off-road, you need recovery points, FRONT and rear. A rear receiver will work just fine. As I read your post Soarhead, I am guessing you do not have a front tow point, i.e, hook, d-ring, just the brush guard itself?, while I would not call it a tow point, if you felt fine about bending up your junk, I'd drag you out..:D

My personal feelings about this trip would lean more toward a Meet&Greet run(I don't care if i have to drop into 4low or not)

Clint, the Eureka area has lots of trails and scenic, something a smidgen closer might be something off the Pony Express route, just outside of Faust, or closer to Simpson Springs, Death Canyon is always a easy off-road trip, just a bit futher....

Ok. After spending a bit of time on the phone with Clint today and reading four days of back posts I am making the decision here.

Clint has spent quite a bit of time researching routes and interesting things for us to see. I am leaving it in his capable hands to take us somewhere interesting.

Something also to remember for us old hands at this. Most of us have seen it or done it all. This run is for the newer guys who haven't seen it all or been everywhere.

My only request is that we end up back towards 5 Mile pass in the afternoon so I can take whoever wants to go up Rattlesnake as I know of two coming out of Wyoming that want to see this trail.

Just wanted to chime in, been to the NAXJA Forums a few times, but first time time Ive been able to post. (Government employer doesn't appreciate me using their computer for such stuff). Anyways, I would be interested in joining up, if there's room for another rig. Total NOOB question, however...is this a NAXJA member only function, or can a non-member tag along? Plan on joining shortly, but procrastination's got the best of me. Either way, I just wanted to say "hi", and hope to see some of you on the trails! I can figure out a map of the general area, but most of it is in my head now :) It's a large sqaure area, seems like alot of road and area, but we'll buzz through it pretty quick. It's almost divided into 2 sections. First section is just scenery and territory you've probably never seen before. Second section is old mines and mine roads. How much time we'll spend on the mine part depends on the time. It's been requested we leave some time to be able to buzz up Rattlesnake afterwards. We'll be meeting in Lehi, it is the best place to get everyone rounded up.

We'll be meeting the "Crossroads" in Lehi. I'll post a map for you soon. I have planned the route so we can drop the trailers at 5 mile pass. Every weekend there are dozens of trucks and trailers parked their to unload their 4wheelers, so leaving them with the rest shouldn't be a problem. We could even leave them at the Rattlesnake parking area as we'll be ending up there anyways.

I won't be going on the trip, but I make a lot of maps at work and can get one of the entire area if you want. I have files on pretty much every little goat track in the state. I don't know where you are headed, but I can get the entire area and let you sort out the rest, if it's needed. My little contribution :D

The maps can be produced as .jpg, .pdf, .tif or any number of other formats. You'd have to print them yourself, I don't run a print shop. :) Clint, give me an idea of where you are headed and I'll whip a map up. Cell # is six-five-six-5904 or email to shanew(AT)ecislc.com. unfortunately the maps won't win any awards, the company I work for cheaped out on software, lol. They will be pretty accurate though-

Let me know if there is any interest-

Ok, Now we need to get everyone who is planning on coming to post up here. I'd like a vehicle count so I know how many people to wait for before we leave the meeting spot. Cell service is flaky in the area we will be in.

Noob, Wif, + one XJ-

Are there cliffs at rattlesnake?, cuz if there is my wife will be scared shiteless.
She ALMOST made me turn around going up Butterfield at night- Can you beleive that!
It's paved the whole way up now and is wide enough to pass 2 cars!

I think she just needs to get accustomed to the whole cliff thing tho.

So do you think I would be able to run the first part of the trip and be back in Layton by 5 or 6? I actually work at 4 but its been a few years since I called work and said "I had some Jeep problems...........!" :shhh: If so I am in with one passenger if I can round one up.

also does anybody have any extra shocks laying around? (not sure the length I need) All I need is some shocks and I can pretty much spring the jeep back over. (well and get that spring perch welded on) I don't mind breaking drag links on wheeling trips. :D I have only broken 3 pffft.

Soar,

There are no cliffs on rattlesnake, but a few places on the scenic tour are high on a mountainside with the road cut into it. It's not too bad, but if she has a fear of heights it could be a problem for her. If she thinks it's a problem, there is a bypass that takes you back to town, but then you'd miss some of the cool stuff...

I think I'll just take it as it comes and if she's ok, then I wont be saying anything. Not reverse psychology, just "I didn't know psychology".
Besides she had never been up butterfield and it was at night so, I'm thinking a trip during the day won't be so bad-
We took the kids up butterfeld to have a marshmallow bonfire(at night) the next week and she was ok with it because it was no longer unchartered territory...

Thanks for the heads up...just don't mention the bypass.;)

We are shooting to be ready to run Rattlesnake by 1-2p. That all depends on how much we play by the mines. The route is designed to run pretty fast so I hope that is OK with everyone. You can bail out at any time on the route pretty much.

Shelly drove her own Jeep, no Jeremy is not allowed to drive her TJ, therfore, the TJ was not taken on Rattlesnake and we never did make it to Waynes World anyways. It just got to be too late.

It was a good time. I know that my kids had a great time, and it was good to have so many other little kids.

Good to see lots of new faces..and to be able to put faces with screen names.

Hope to see everyone at the Christmas Party!
