in New Orleans? I realize that most of the place is still kind of trashed but I'll be flying to New Orleans on business next week (final destination is Baton Rouge) and I"ll have couple hours left to kill Mon afternoon.
Also anyone local to Baton Rouge that would want to meet up for a beer Monday night?

Go to Compton and imagine it was flooded last year...
You'll still get mugged, but at least you won't have as far to limp home.

Remi,
I use to spend a lot of time in "Norlens" until Katrina destroyed the boat builder I worked with. They are now in Mississippi.....anyhow to awnser your question.
The French Quarter. Use your ears. Find some Jazz or Zydeco sounds that you like, follow your ears to the bar or lounge they are comming from, sit down and drink. The gentlemens clubs are excellent as well.
Find a hotel thats on a trolley line so you can park at your hotel and ride the trolley to and from the French quarter, you can figure this out online. Dont try and drive down there. A couple wrong turns and your in big trouble.
Shoot me a pm if you are serious and I will call some buddies that can reccommend a couple of excellent hotels for you and give you an update on the hot places post Katrina.

Thanks,
I'm actually staying in Baton Rouge but since I'm landing in New Orleans and have the afternoon/evening free I figured I'd check the place out. So if anyone has any specific recomendation to some cool blues joint I'm definately open. I like most of the old blues along the lines of Muddy Waters and so on, so if there is a place that plays stuff along those lines that'd be perfect :D

I will make the calls in the a.m. The two guys that travel there the most "Dex" (as in Dexter from Dexters laboratory) and "Mr. Woody" are out in SoCal right now but with a little luck I will reach them and get a some reccomendations on hotel, trolley line and blues in the Muddy Waters style at one of the finer establishments.
You must eat some cajun french while in "Norlens". Crawdads, andoule sausauge, frog legs, gator tail. I cant really help you there. Dex & Mr. Woody know the bars and gentlemans clubs but they dont know squat about food. Every place I know for good food was in the bayou country and almost certainly doesnt exist anymore.
I will post the reccomendations.
You gonna try the 9 foot water fall that is now at the top of Lower Doran or weasel out and just run the Hammers?

It was always frustrating for me to go to New Orleans. I hate that city so much now because every time I go down there, the same freakin trash is in the same yards, the same trees from Katrina are still down and the same people are STILL sitting around waiting for a hand out. I went down there each time flying Bush around and at first, it was sad, but the past few times, it was just annoying. It doesnt take a whole lot of effort to go out and clean up your OWN yard and there are still a lot of people who wont. Ok, sorry. I'll stop now. =)

Remi,
I have two hotel reccomendations, both within walking/crawling distance of the French Quarter. The first is "The W". This is an eclectic upscale hotel that caters to a young, new moneyed hip crowd. Its a lot of fun from what I understand. The second is the Hilton Waterfront. The neither hotel is cheap but we get in under a DOD rate of around $100 per night, you can expect it to be $30-$70 more for a single.
The trolley lines we used and the hotels we normally stayed at in the Garden district are not reliable yet. Hence my suggestions on a walking distance hotel. Since you are flying to the west coast you can get a later flight and still get home at a reasonable hour.
Restaraunts, bars, clubs are hit and miss even in the French Quarter. There are still lots of great places to go but so much has changed, closed, reopened and closed again that I cant give you reliable info. Best bet is to use your ears and settle in where you like the music. Food is still everywhere.
XJ content: I still havent fixed my leaf springs after wrapping them on the Rubicon. I wish I could join you at Johnson Valley after missing it last year. Emma wants to know if we can go back to Calico this January so she can see here friends again and watch you and Rabbit on lower Doran. Thank you for all the trail repairs you made possible as we shook down my XJ on the first couple of runs (tie rod, motor mount, electric fan replacement...) I think you own 1/4 of my rig after all that.

Unfortunately I gotta spend the nights in Baton Rouge :(

There is only one direct flight that I could find, and since I'm there on business I'm kind of limited. I would have hung around for couple extra days on my own if it wasn't for the Moab preparation that I got to do.

If you fly out to LA I'm betting money that there will be plenty enough open seats at either event that you can still camp and have fun.

Yea, but they also got many many 5 star Italian eateries, more than NYC or Boston, of the old style that make it a good place for that and thats ALL I can say about it. It's a typical state capital full or politicans and their synchophants.
