Anybody into subwoofers in XJ's.

Hello all,

I am looking for anyone that has installed a subwoofer into their XJ. I know there used to be woofer inserts made by a company that had custom fit subwoofer cases that fit in the passenger side rear compartment. I do not want something too big but I would like some low end.

My brother had two 10's in his 89 XJ. That thing sounded great (even with sony explode crap). Crutchfield has those custom cases for the rear compartment..i don't think it's going to get much more compact than that.

i got 3 tens ive had forever under the 300 lbs of tools in the back. also 2 6x9's amped up, all factory replacements amped up. great for field partys.

you are correct, The enclosure looks huge, but the area of box is actully just a little over 1.3 cu feet. the box is hollow from the front just behind the seat, I have the yellow top/cd changer/sirius tuner/oba and recovery equipment in there, using it as a storage place kept things clean and out of sight. will get a few pics of it up soon.

i just got a new enclosure yesterday , and a rockford p3 12'' to compliment the hx2 ( that they no longer make )
cant get evil on it yet , has to " break in "
i will try to get a pic posted when i get home tonight .

YES! If you love rattles, then definitely get this box. You have to spend lots of time insulating the crap out of everything to get it to sound better but still have rattles. Problem is that it attaches the interior panel and doesnt have a very solid mount point. the sub will cause the box to move the panel and rattle at the edges of the panels... JL AUdio or JBL (cant remember) made a much better box that some ppl have. They stopped making them but if you find one, grab it. then I'll trade you the XJ pod for it. :)

the surrounds are so tight on the hx2 and the new p3.( high excursion woofers ) that they will self destruct if you just put them in and blast .
some of the guys at the db drags/ boom off's will put them in and not even hook them up until they are ready to test .
you will get the highest db level possible because they are still tight .
but they may only last a minute or so at 1000 watts. seems like an $$$$ way to win .

so if you want them to last , you break them in for a while at about half volume , 8 hours was the recommendation of my retailer , and i trust his advise .
so far even at 1/2 volume or so , and running 4 ohm now vs 2 ohm before they are more responsive and loud as hell .

For example a 4ohm amp that puts out 440w will only put out 220w of you connect an 8ohm speaker.

When I build a speaker enclosure. I built it solid out of at least 5/8" MDF or 3/4" plywood. Glue it, acoustically seal the enclosure and bolt or screw in the woofers. Anyone who tells you otherwise should be able to explain why they do it another way and show you data to support their claims...

I've built guitar amplifiers and enclosures, bass cabinets, regular multispeaker cabinets, ported and enclosed using dozens of different types of speakers and subs and I've yet to have a problem of any kind...

I ran subs in my XJ before, now its been replaced with a spare tire and enough tools to rebuild half my Xj on the trail. Just too risky having expensive stereo equipment in a truck that is only driven on the street to get to the trails. Hell I swapped out my $550 cd player and put the stock tape deck back in.



Beej - The surround is what connects the cone of the speaker to the basket and allows it to move in and out. You know the outer ring of the speaker.

Superstitions are stupid.

When your competing for top honors in something and you don't have to pay for it, it doesn't matter if you blow your speaker with a 30 second 20hz tone.

According to Kicker's website when I bought my sub from them they recommended breaking in the woofer with a 25-40hz tone for 8 hours on a bench. I have also seen similiar advisements for Rockford Fosgate and Infinity subs.

There are a lot of Amps, monoblock subwoofer amps especially, that can be run at two ohms.


Considering your supposed experience with audio equipment, you should know this already.

i have seen a custom box for a 12" mounted inside the back cargo hold were the spare tire originally sits against the wall. I plan on relocating my spare onto the roof rack and making a custom box there myself for a 10". i like this option becuase i can put the tire cover back on the box that holds my speaker in order to disguise it.

2 ohms offer less resistance. If you have a 2ohm output amp (never seen one) you have never seen a 2 ohm stable amp ? ( hell there are 1/2 ohm stable amps ).
ok , the amp i am using is 800 watts rms and 1700 max @ 2 ohm.which was overkill for the 1000 watt max hx2 .
now ,i have both subs wired 4 ohm total , which brings the max output into reality @ 800 watts . what you are not taking into account , is that i doubled the surface area of the cones by adding a second speaker .

we are not talking about a sealed box , it's a ported enclosure which offers very little resistance to the movement of the speaker cone .
therfore cranking the hell out of them brand new can tear the cone from the surround ( on a high excursion woofer ) allowing the voice coil to short out on the magnet assm.

you know BEEJ , all i was saying in my original post is that i am not in any great hurry to risk XXXXing up a new speaker or amp .

...the 10" JL audio sub and some Clarion 6X9s are run by a 650 watt amp and some Alpine 5" door speakers are run by a Kenwood KDC-MP732 head unit. I like the fact that I lose no cargo space with the JL stealth box and the sound is quite satisfactory. I wish the sterio in my new truck sounded as good.

i have 2 pioneer 10's but im only running one through an alpine 1x800 amp. i have 2 infinity 6.5's in the front doors and pioneer 5.25's in the rear sound bar. it sounds really clean, and the sub bumps pretty hard when i want it to

I have to DEI eights in truck boxes behind my pass. seat. Works good, would like tens but rahter spend the money on other things at this point.

And the break in period doesn't make any sence to me either. The comp guys could over extend them in the period they use them and blow wires or rip the foam but other then that a break in period really doesn't seem like it would do anything.

They rattle like hell, but with a little work mine doesn't rattle at all. I have a lot of power going to it too (for an 8) and I can make it hit pretty hard if I turn the bass up.

You have to pull the interior panel out and do vibration dampening behind the interior panel. All the way to where it attaches to othe other panels. Thats what I lot of people forget to do.
