I have no idea who it's by. The song plays on classic rock stations. There are no vocals...just harmonica/instrumental. I would describe it as very long...it seems to keep going like the energizer bunny. Anyone have a guess what it might be? Thanks.

I really have no idea..i'm not trying to be a PITA by providing as little detail as possible.

Hmmm...I was thinking Jessica by the Allman Brothers. It's 7 minutes long. But harmonica??

Jessica by the Allman Brothers does not have a harmonica in it ... it's a guitar/piano instrumental. The Allman Brothers did not use harmonica very much.

Nope..no vocals (at least the version i heard on the radio).

johnlv6

There's a bass guitar in the background with a steady BumBum Bum (single notes...first two closer together, the third has a longer duration).

Or if you're near a computer go online and look at their website. Just about every radio station has a list on their homepage that shows the last 10 or so songs played.

Piano Man by Billy Joel? Intro is piano and harmonica...

E.L.O. has a long instrumental. The classic rock station here plays it twice a day. Can't think of the title though.

What kind of music is it besides "Classic Rock". That is a generic term.

Huey Lewis and the News uses a harmonica alot ... could it be that band?

Why do I keep thinking of War everytime I'm in this thread? Other than the fact that I just did sound for Lee Oscar that is. I can't picture what they did that's totally instrumental though.

As far as harmonicas go all I can think of is stuff by Blues Traveler.

First thing that came to mind was Frankenstein by Edgar Winters Group. But that is synthasizer and not harmonica. hmm need more clues if this is not it.

Bob Dylan and/or Grateful Dead?

Dylan did a lot with harmonicas, though I can't think of an instrumental-only track he did.

I wuz thinkin' of Young's "Heart of Gold" as a looonnng instrumental but so is Super Tramp's "Long Way Home." Heck, there are so few lyrics you coulda just missed 'em!

And please, when did Blues Traveller get promoted from candy-assed pop to classic rock?!?!???

My next guess is Green Onions by Booker T. and the MGs, but you'd have to be mistaking Hammond for harmonica.

That was my first guess but couldn't think of the "Booker T." part. It was also done by Roy Buchanan. Are you sure there was no harmonica in there?

Not in the original, I'll have to see if I have Roy's version, I only have one or two CDs from him.

Ya' know this question has really been bothering me because now I know exactly the song he's talking about. They use to play it on the radio alot and may have been used in a radio or TV commercial or two. An instrumental like that is always hard to identify because of the lack of lyrics gives it no identity. I think it might have been done by "Roomful of Blues" or some band with similar "second tier" popularity. The harmonica just wailed for the entire song with only a few breaks which were like downbeats. I'm clueless.

OK,... I did a little research. I don't know th song but the musician I'm thinking of is Magic Dick of the J. Giels band. What he does for a living is play blues harp: both with that band as well as a guest artist elsewhere.

OK,... I found it. This is what I do when I'm at home in dire pain with the shingles. Wouldn't wish it on anybody. Tylenol is my friend. The song is called Whammer Jammer by Magic Dick and the J. Giels Band. Its recieved lots of airplay on the radio. If you go to Tower records you can hear a piece of it if you go to the link below you'll find the album: "Inspiration: 22 Great Harmonica Performances." Its there but the segment that you can preview doesn't really give you enough to hear the music take off. If that's not the one than I have no clue which harp performance you're talking about. I'm hoping that his is the link below to the album

I had shingles a couple years ago, i know how painful that is. It isn't Whammer Jammer...i've already tried that one. I'm going to have to dig through that whole list and see if it might be one of the other songs on the album. Thanks for taking the time to look that up.

Whammer Jammer is a J. Geils Band song. It was released by them. Sure, Magic Dick *may* have also done it on the side, but it is a J. Geils Band song.

I think I will listen to it now.... just for memories. :)

If you can come up with the artist, I may be able to help. I am working with the company that does that radio stations music. I have access to an amazing library... in fact that is what I am working on. But withouth the artists name, I am a bit lost. :)

That's the thing that gets me...the station announces the artists name before the song plays. I never manage to catch the beginning of the song. I emailed the station a couple weeks ago...i never got a reply back. I sure they were like "what the fawk is this guy talking about?" Thanks...i'll let you know if i can find the artists name.

It wasn't any of those. There were no vocals...that's the thing that stood out to me. That and the song seemed like it was never going to end...just kept going and going. It's not new either...it's playing on a classic rock station.

Classic rock does not mean only old songs. Especially that station. They play Nervana, and that will never be classic rock IMHO!

Ummm, if you're going to nitpick, as far as I am aware, Magic Dick is/was a member of the J. Giels Band and was the one who originated Whammer Jammer and performed it. I'm happy to be corrected if I'm worng but the literature suggests otherwise.
