View Full Version : Advise On Fixes Before JV

Hey.

I need a little guidance and info on a few fixes so I can get my rig out to JV.

1) The spring perch center hole is elongated. How can I fix this before JV. Right now, I don't have the skills, time, or money to buy new perches and install them.
If I can't "Band-Aid" fix it, then I'll probably won't be able to make JV. But it needs to be safe.

2) I have to replace the output shaft on a 231. How long do you guys think it'll take to do for someone who has never done it before? Is it an easy job and can I do it with standard tools??

3) Also, I need to replace the rear main seal on a Renix and never done it either. Thoughts??

4) The same question for RE Drop Brackets.

I know it's all doable before JV. I just don't know if I can get it all done.

Thanks,
E

 I know it's ADVICE and not Advise..

Maybe get someone to weld that hole up on the spring perch thats pretty quick and easy.

Drop brackets are pretty simple to install.

I do have a welder. Maybe now's the time to learn how to weld. I'm guessing I just need to fill the hole enough to make it round.

this.

?? This what????????? This thread sucks??? This is the time??? This and that????? This?? lol

i mean do this. this man is right. this is the answer. this is what i was going to say.

this. :D

fill the oblong side of the hole and drill it out round again, and you'll be good to go, and drop brackets are easy, its just a few bolts.

Rear main seals on the Renix suck. It's not so much the rear main as it is the oil pan and oil pan gasket. I think it's one of the toughest cork style gaskets to deal with.

Small word of advise would be to go to napa and buy some paint/gasket remover. Spray that on the gasket after you get the pan of and let it sit. The longer you let it sit the better it works.

Otherwise it's not that hard, especially if it's lifted. Drail the oil, take all the pan bolt out, seperate the pan from the block (that's the hard part) remove the rear main cap, swap the seals and put it all back.

I agree with the others. Weld it shut, drill it out, grind it flat, call it good.

First time in a case and done in vehcile I'd say about four hours. Helps to have a keen eye for detail and mechanical knowledge. Oh, and you'll need snap ring pliars.

3) Also, I need to replace the rear main seal on a Renix and never done it either. Thoughts??

Four to six hours max, hardest part is removing the pan as the old gasket turns into JB-Weld.

4) The same question for RE Drop Brackets.

Pretty easy stuff really.

Have fun

Ok.....

Thanks for the replies.............

Here's the order:
1) Weld up spring perches
2) Install drop brackets (at the same time as the lift)
3) Replace rear output shaft

Then MAYBE
4) Replace the rear main seal.. (I had a hunch that it would be a pain)

I know, I know.... WAY last minute...... ;)

Tighten your U-bolts.

A Lot.

If you really want to, buy a 3/8" bolt and dont grind the head smooth, then grind the hole in the perch to fit the bolt. should be easier then drilling a weld hard spot...

Of the 4, this is the only that Id do. but I bought an AA unit the first time I did an SYE, so, I havent ever had to 'change' my output shaft since then...

it takes about 2 hours if you know what your doing, and if you remember to buy RTV before you start.

3) Also, I need to replace the rear main seal on a Renix and never done it either. Thoughts??

Add oil when you add gas

4) The same question for RE Drop Brackets.

Dont bother - wont help in the rocks, only on the road on the way there.

Just throwing this out there, but if you have the skills to cit those perches of, I have a new set you can have. You just need someone to weld them on.

Elias, the first time I installed my SYE, it took me less than 3 hours. To help you save some time:

1. Get GOOD snap ring pliers with interchangeable tips and make sure they are the large pliers (not the smaller size).

2. When removing the output shaft and the parts that surround it, keep the parts orientation the same so that you can remember which way the parts were....its easy to get a couple of things installed backwards and then something doesnt fit quite right.

3. Some ppl say removing the whole transfer case is faster than just pulling the back half off. I think it depends on experience.

4. As Opie mentioned, you could get the large leaf bolts from Deaver that would still fit really snug in the perch. I drilled mine out to fit the larger size.

5. Drop brackets...remember to not tighten any bolt down until you have em ALL in. Also it makes it faster when you have heel n pinch set for aligning the bracketry mounting holes.

Id help you out but I have lots of crap going on right now

Personally if you have a lot of room to move around under the vehicle, have a clean driveway / garage floor, and the crossmember is removed I'd do it in-vehicle. I pulled the output shaft out of Ron's MJ (before he cut it up) that way and it probably took about fifteen minutes to get it out.

Ok. Let's see if I can get this done.

Looks like I'll making a trip to the 909 - Justin, pm will be coming your way. ;)

From there, let's hope the Jeep Powers To Be let everything fall into place. The Beast is in Phelan. I need to make a trip up there on Friday to paint it. I'll probably bring it down on Sunday. Then, it's all Up Hill from there.. :eyes:

Thanks for the offers and pointers. If time permits, I'll be cutting the perches and taking it to HB.. ;)

Let the fun begin.. :D

Just so you know E i do all that kind work if your short on time. If you need a place to do that here in LA with welders and alll sorts of goodies and make a lot of noise with out waking the baby you can work on it at my shop here in San Gabriel. i can do the welding if you like as well. The rear main isnt hard to do once you get the pan off.

Just make sure if you do the rear main to get a one piece pan gasket. the multi piece pan gaskets suck ass. Wear safety glasses when you scrape the block clean for the new gasket, it will take 427 hours to scrape all that old paper/cork off.

Thanks for the offers Willy and Jay. I roped my brother into helping me on sunday. :D It only cost me set of stock rims and tires. But, it's my brother and we take advantage of each other all the time. :D.

I should be able to get the lift and axles installed with his help. That will give me the rest of the week to do the other stuff.

DOH!!!! I forgot about the front locker. Maybe I'll install it on the Friday before JV. I'm just going to throw a Lock Rite in it. I still have to pick that up too.

How could you forget? Just think about the first 18 seconds in your video in your sig line. And the 10 minutes you had to cut out of the same thing :D.

I chose to keep more of it, but I sped it up

Heh, you'll have to forgive me. THAT was my first run ever with a front locker in the 10 years I've been doing this crap. It's instant cocky in a 250 dollar box (yes, I said c**k and box in one sentence, har har).

No need to explain. I know how it is. Sometimes you need skinny pedal if there isn't traction. You did good.
