Anyone heard of a Asian Warner Transmission? Probably not spelling it correctly but I have been told by a mechanic that my 96 XJ classic doesn't have the typical Chrysler Transmission. Tranny occassionally catches on 2nd gear and not first so I need a 1 stage solenoid?

Aisin Warner as in AW4(Automatic) is what you have. That is in fact the factory transmission. Your mechanic isn't well versed in Jeeps by the sounds of it and i would seek out another. That Tranny is excellent if you keep fresh fluid in her and don't over heat it. A trans temp gauge is a great investment.

Cherish your mechanic my friend. Any mechanic who doesnt automatically assume that the XJ uses a Chrysler trans is worth its weight in gold.

Maybe the mechanic was WELL aware of that, and was just making sure the driver was too? Who knows, but welcome to the wonderful world of the XJ, where the adventures of off roading are only rivaled by the adventures of being stranded God knows where or when, because the damn CPS or some bad ground or the TPS or the damn water bottle cracked again because the clutch fan isn't keeping up with the temps (deep breath) or the starter died from so many long cranking starts or the fuel pickup is making a fool out of you in left handed turns or the injectors are getting heat soaked........ Sorry, I just spent all morning laying under my 88 in a parking lot doing a starter transplant! I needed to vent!

Your mechanic was thinking of the Grand Cherokee. With a 4.0, the GC gets a Chrysler tranny.

I think the aw4 was used behind the twin turbo supras.

Do you know if the Pre 96' R154 transmission from a supra will fit on a 4.0? They are supposed to be able to handle 400+ HP and have similar bolt pattern for the bellhousing. Would be nice to have the first 3 gears longer than stock.

My interpretation or how i read the thread starters question was that the mechanic was surprised by this fact is all. I agree that if the mechanic was merely informing his customer the differences then by all means the mechanic is fine. I took as he was shocked by this fact.:peace:

Not sure. It has been a long time since I read about supras. But I do recall someone with a blown up supra engine that swapped in a 4.0, so maybe!

Be happy that you have an Aisin-Warner AW-4 transmission and not the pieces o'crap that most Chrysler vehicles are saddled with. It's only an OD transmission that's good behind stroked 4.xL engines as well as Turbo Celicas.

The AW-4 is the only auto transmission found behind all 4.0L Cherokees from intro of the 4.0L in 1987 through the end of the line in 2001.

You are blessed with the best light duty slushbox ever made. It is almost "idiot" proof. Keep it cool and keep it changed and it will most likely be the only thing on your XJ that you don't modify or have to repair.

I have heard reports of these trannys handling 400-500 ftlbs of torque and up to 700hp, no facts to back that up with though.

My local tranny guy hates them because they never die of a natural deaf and they don't die young. He can't make any money off of them.
