I don't know the specifics about campfires, but I would use my tried and true resoning of "It's only illegal if you get caught".

I don't want to start a war here but with that reasoning do you think that could be the reason for closures of other trails

I knew that was coming... No, truthfully I am very responsible out there on the trails. I usually find myself picking up other peoples trash.
But, if it was start a fire or freeze... I'll start a fire. I don't see any reason why a reasonable fire would be illegal. I know they are legal on BLM land which is where I usually camp out there at Razor Road.

nothing about campfires in that article.
I would like to run the Mojave, but I want to do it with someone who has done it before.

I've done Mojave Road about a half dozen times. The way I understand it (and the rule I have used) is that you can camp in existing camps and have fires in existing fire rings.
Its not hard to find an old camp on mojave road, they are near all of the springs.

Not pointing any fingers at anyone. But anything that we can to do AVOID any trail closures is key.
And like cal said, there are plenty of camps and rings in those camps. Just have a good time, be safe and do what you can to promote trail safety and pledge to keep our trails open. Lord knows we need all the help we can get now.

Its about 130 miles. I've run it in a day, and I've spread it out over 4 days. There are things to stop and look at all over. Buy the book, read it, read the websites, read the book again. Then go run it 3 or 4 times, you'll still find new stuff.

I too would like to run the Mohave Trail. Perhaps come Spring. I live right at the top of the cajon pass right off the 15. My house might make a good gathering place for anyone coming from So Cal. I have never done it so the planning needs to come from some one with experience. A 3 day weekend might be good for many but I'd like a weekday they best.

If I can't find a previously used fire pit in the desert, I will use the lid off of a metal trash can as a portable fire ring...

It's turned into a major inside joke and you had to be there or be involved to understand the meaning behind the phrase "Free Andy" and why only a very few of us have this sticker.

On the first weekend of April 2004, I was doing a pre-run of the Mojave Road in preparation to lead a run of the SoCal chapter of NAXJA two weeks later.
The pictures from the pre-run are hosted here (http://www.kodakgallery.com/I.jsp?c=179ruq1t.6qkqdkut&x=0&y=m0tycn).
The discussion about the rescue took place on SoCalXJ's YahooGroup. It's not a terribly long thread. Subject line is RESCUE-URGENT NEED!!! (http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/socalxj/messages/62514?l=1) with follow up threads under the subject Andy and the group are free (http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/socalxj/message/62522). All the posts on the topic were done and over in only two days.
Fast forward two weeks to the actual run. Here is the thread on NAXJA about the run with everybody's photos and here (http://www.naxja.org/forum/showpost.php?p=190149&postcount=24) is my trip report and the explanation why the stickers even exist. By the way, if you do run the trail, please look at the mail box and see if the sticker we placed on it is still there.

So easy to find out.

BTW... in case you're planning on hauling a crowd.
A Special Park Recreation Use Permit (http://www.nps.gov/moja/parkmgmt/upload/10-930%20spu%20app-moja-3.pdf) is required for some activities within Mojave National Preserve. A non-refundable application fee is required from all applicants, regardless of whether or not the permit is issued. There are two fee categories, depending on the nature of the proposed activity:
Groups of at least 7 vehicles or 15 participants for common recreational activities (rock climbing, hunting, fishing or trapping, equestrian use, bicycling, street-legal motorcycle or all-terrain vehicle use, backcountry use and roadside vehicle camping).
Application Fee: $5o

Mojave Road Guide by Dennis Casebier
New third edition recently released.
http://mdhca.org/
Click PUBLICATIONS at left.
The third edition of the Mojave Road Guide is available by mail order from the MDHCA (http://mdhca.org/mdhcawhoweare.html). The book has a new larger size at 6.75" X 9.5", makes use of heavier paper, and is wire spiral bound. Front and back covers are printed in full color. The first part of the book has new features -- an essay on the history of the Mojave Road followed by a section of portraiture -- images of people who made history along the Mojave Road prior to 1880 -- 24 portraits are reproduced. The "General Guidlines" section has been modified to reflect changes in management resulting from passage of the California Desert Protection Act.
The book is authored by Dennis Casebier (http://mdhca.org/mdhcaarchive.html) with the help of many volunteers. The narrative road log has been significantly revised, checked and rechecked, and reformatted to make it easier to use. The maps have been completely redone and special efforts have been made to simplify navigation between written narrative and the maps.
Price is $19.95 plus tax and shipping -- tax at 7.75% is $1.55. Shipping is $3.00. Making the total cost $24.50 per copy.

I think you're right. And it should be another official SoCal NAXJA chapter run. Which means the chapter president or treasurer needs to pull a permit from the NPS.

I'll be happy to lead it again. And simply because it's hard for me to deal with primitive camping, I'll make arrangements for us to stay at the Goff's Schoolhouse again. They've recreated the old Goffs railroad depot and are now using that as the library.

Andy, you are an animal... You get a run set up and I will be there for sure. I remember talking about this in May and everyone said I was nuts. So, now is the time. Let's do it. Any other takers?

There are plenty of old campfire rings around the trail.
Plan on at least 2 days to run it and see the good stuff.
