Ok, just anouther stupid newbie, Thought i would say hi, and get flamed a little, get it out of the way for later.

I just bought a 97 xj off of ebay, and this week went and picked it up.
here are some pics

http://members.cox.net/dalen_cox/frontleftjeep.jpg

It is a pretty nice jeep, its first outing was just to get it home, and it was a 10 hour journy at over 80mph, so no gas milage. Oh well

3 inch rusty's lift, Rusty's fender flares, BVG roof rack, and 15x8 eagle alloy rims.

My question is: where would you put the cb in a truck that has the navigation console on the roof?

And has anyone had anyproblems with power windows not working, mine worked for part of the trip then the passanger front stoped working. I have taken the door apart, and there does not seem to be any power going from any of the wires in the door panel to the window switch.

I bought a chiltons for this jeep, but wouldnt you know, the cut off on the book is 1998, but there is nothing in it for 1997 or 1998, so i dont even know what fuses are what in the fuse box. So if anyone has a diagram of the fuse box for this truck, i would love to have a copy of it.

Ok, there, flame away.

Dyou see those 2 big round things on the top of your xj those are fuses...ever one mounts the cb on the roof buy the fuses...that metal thing the fuses are on is the fuse box...cbs dont work unless close to the box...hope this helps...oh yea nice xj...||charles|| http://i9.tinypic.com/2v7wdpc.gif

You might as well velcro or ziptie those rusty's flares on in case you ever want to go wheeling...

get to the trailhead and take 'em off.

if not...

Welcome Nighthawk ... nice XJ. No flames from here, but a piece of advice ... cut that receiver off the front bumper and recess it. Your knees and shins will love you for it. Enjoy the Jeep and consider yourself welcome to any and all upcoming events.

You are a better searcher than me, but thanks man, i will practice a bit more before asking any more dumb questions.

As for the flares, they where on the truck when i bought it, i liked the look, and thought i would leave them on till they broke, then look for something even better.

Yes, definitely recess the receiver.

cut that receiver off the front bumper and recess it.

Thanks for the advise, i was thinking about making a grill guard for the front, and putting it on the front of the bumper going up rather than on the top, that would make it a not stick out so far. but i dont know yet.

Asking if anyone has a Chilton's laying around says a couple things. To me at least!!

1. You have no idea what you have gotten yourself into. Get the Jeep FSM instead. (Factory Service Manual)

2. You can not afford to maintain the vehicle you just bought. (especially doing 8 hour, 80mph runs with a lifted vehicle)

Also it's a "best practice" around here to never ask for copywrited material. When people post parts of the FSM or a Chilton's or Haynes, the threads magically disappear!!

Ok then, now that you have that out of your system, you can read what i wrote, I HAVE THE CHILTONS MANUAL, but thank you for the recomendation on the FSM, I will get one shortly.

The truck had a complete going through when i picked it up, and for the first hour or so, i took it quite easy, and gradually worked up to traveling speed. One thing i guess i did not mention is that my wife and my 9 day old baby girl where in the jeep with me, and well, we really wanted to be home. I know it was not the best thing for the jeep, and that is not how i plan on driving the jeep now that i have it home, but after several stops checking for leaks or fluid consumption, and doing a visual once over of the vehicle, i felt comfortable.

Thanks for your advise though.

The switch that locks the window switches (next to the driver's side window switch) tends to go in and out on my '99.
Pushing it a couple times will sometimes work.

Bells and whistles are cool.
I even fabbed a bracket to keep the power seats when I switched to the Corbeaus.

A little civility in the uncivilized world of wheeling.

Nice XJ. Unless you are experienced in building rigs, become afilliated with a local club or group. Leave your new XJ at home and take some ride alongs with an experienced driver/owner/builder that you you can get along with and trust for advise. Don't trust the first guy that comes along. Too many in this activity like to use the greenhorn for their own purposes. The right individual will probably come to you. Ride observe ask questions (no matter how dumb you might think ) and eventually you will be able to develop a plan for building your trail rig. Don't start throwing money at your rig unless you have a plan. Remember, every mod requires changes. For instance, don't buy 36" tires with a 3" lift. Every mod has it's purpose and limitations. Geometry, flex and torc can be your friend or foe. :rtm:

Another thing to remember. When you go out on the trail with that shiny XJ, there are some people that will deliberately get you into situations they know will cause problems. :scottm: They want to see you get unnecessary body damage. Experience is your best protection.

On the radio. Consider the Courier that has the speaker and controls in the microphone and the main unit mounts under the dash or in hiding somewhere of your choice out of the way.

Chilton and other repair books are usually useless for most situations you really need info. They just fill pages with generic tripe that gets you to buy it. get a book the pros use, Factory Service Manual.

It was implied. You obviously have never been around any NAXJA runs or NAXJA people for that matter. Both are top notch in my book.

Oh, and I'm not replying to your hateful, "e-tough guy" PM either. You need to get a little thicker skin if you can't handle it, you'll never make it here if you don't. I encourage you to stick around, I think you'll like it if you give it time and look at it with an open mind.

Derik is right, i already have some dents, dings, and scratches, but that is just character.

Thanks for the advise guys, i run with a good bunch of guys, low budget boys like me that still have to drive their rig home, then to work the next day. We might be pussys in some of your eyes, but hey we still have fun, still make some runs, and still work together as a team on and off the trail. We usually help each other build and get our rigs ready before every run as well. Here is our local yahoo site if there are any of you local to the kansas area that dont mind running with more than just xjs or jeeps in a more family type setting.
http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/KS_Outlaw_4x4/

We will alot of times go out of our way as a whole group to get around a trail that looks like even one person out of the group is not going to make it up. Just so something like what you where talking about does not happen. At the same time, if you do think you can make it, and want to run the trail, we will stop, you do your thing, and we will help you if you dont make it.

Im not a noob to wheeling, having grown up atving on many of the trails that i now run in the jeep. And this is not the first rig that i have built, or helped build. I had an IH before this, and wow, what a job it is to build one of those. I do watch this site every day, looking for advise, reading others mistakes, and i also have 4 or 5 guys here local running jeeps that i get alot of advise from too. From what i have seen, i really like the Family that NAXJA seems to build within its members, and i look forward to getting to run with many of you.

As for the jeep, for the time being, it is going to stay pretty much how you see it in the pics. Im getting my big ammo box ready for the back so i can carry tools, straps, tiedowns, etc. I still need to get a HI-Lift, and do some thing with my spare tire (roof, bumper, drag it with a rope: you know the options). The only machanical work that i have or will be doing is: cap, rotor, plugs, wires, filters, muffler, exhaust manifold, diy swaybar discos, remove rear sway, and adjustable lower control arms. Custom self fab skids.

Before doing any more lifting, tires or anything else, im going to run it for a year or so, get a good feel for it. At some point i would like to go with a ford 8.8 discs, lockers, 4.56 or 4.27s and maybe up to 33s with enough lift to do 33s comfortable. I have no plans at this time of hacking, caging, or full coil. I do think that stuff is cool as hell, and want a full on rock only rig, but just a champaine dream on a beer budget right.

As for salina having something to do, not a damn thing, i guess you could hang out with the local xj guys. But other than that, nothing really.

We are very lucky where we are to have some real nice areas close by. Tuttle Creek is about 1.5 hours. Cassville Mo is about 6, Kansas Rocks is about 5(i think), and Disney OK is 6 or 7 i think.

Most people from here go up to Tuttle to play just cause it is so close, and that is a good all around place to dial in your rig before going to kansas rocks or disney
