You are NOT going to pull me back into THAT thread with a debate on religion, so don't even try :illegal_flipoff:

But, just 'cause I can't resist...

GOD IS ONLY A FIGMENT OF THE IMAGINATION.

How does that make Him any less powerful (since He controls your imagination (as well as everyone else's imagination (since He is God, afterall)))?

That was always one of my sore points with the Bible. It was written by man (who isn't perfect), and was actually put together after Jesus's (New Testament) time on Earth to chronical his life here. There were many things left out that didn't fully support what is currently in there. Plus it was written in Hebrew, then translated to English, and anyone who speaks two languages knows that there are certian things lost in translation.

And for the record, likewise you.

At the core of the argument, which is more plausible:

1.) that there is no uber personality living in the sky that controls everything

2.) the converse of #1

??

As a rational person I'd think it is more likely that number 2 is the one that needs to be proven. Otherwise you get into the old philosophy course "experiment" of proving an object in front that you can see with your own eyes does not exist.

LOL!!! I like the trailer trash comment.

You made a decision for yourself based on the assumptions of others; i.e. your parental units. Did you not ever have the will or fortitude to questions it?

Again, I'm not trying to be argumentative. I just want to understand. You don't have to help me understand either, I'm just curious.

It's funny the way people use the terms faith and belief.

It's been my experience that most "old people" that are real church goers are actually not staunch believers. They have very strong faith in the church though.

You can connect your own dots on that one. My "gut" is that at a certain age people question everything regardless of what they were taught.

ok i'll pipe in, i do have faith in myself but not a regular faith, i have faith in myself that i can lead a moral life in the eyes of others and myself in the absence of a belief that there is a god watching me, i live morally and honorably for the sake of those who i come in contact with and for my own sake as well as a road to a happy and fulfilled lifetime. the idea of god is such a powerful and abstract question that i openly acknowledge that it is not for us to know whether it exists or not. i live on what i know and am confident in, and that right now is making my existence positive and fulfilled for ME and those around me, because in the end that is all we know that exists at this very moment. i'm not trying to bash anyones faith, because i know its different for everyone and i encourage everyone to find something to put faith in yourdelf, god, whatever, just as long as that faith focuses you to live your life well

So is the exchange of gifts a cultural aspect of Christmas or a religious one?

If one is not religious does that mean they are not allowed to have any culture either?

If a Muslim co-worker gave you a Christmas present this year would you look at him funny and refuse to accept the present?

I'm not saying that at all, but he is denouncing everything that is even remotely Godlike, but yet he is celebrating "the season" by exchanging gifts and whatever else he does.

I would not. I would look at it as a nice gesture. A muslim may not believe in what I do and again that's fine, and that same Muslim might give me a gift on Christmas, but that same Muslim will not celebrate or do anything on Christmas. Again, it's just awfully coincidental he's celebrating the season when he's an atheist.

"I'll be an athiest until it benefits me at Christmas time."

I call bullsh*t on the entire thing

"On May 28, 1998 Pakistan announced that it had successfully conducted five nuclear tests. The Pakistani Atomic Energy Commission reported that the five nuclear tests conducted on May 28 generated a seismic signal of 5.0 on the Richter scale, with a total yield of up to 40 KT (equivalent TNT). Dr. A.Q. Khan claimed that one device was a boosted fission device and that the other four were sub-kiloton nuclear devices."
