well ladies and gentlemen, as the title says i got tagged. :flamemad:

I know i don't post much in here and i am too distraught to search at the moment. my 99 xj has pretty much been flawless and babied. so, of course, it got rearended by two illegal mexicans today. apparently they provided a insurance card to the cops, time will tell if it is legit. so, maybe flame away at me cause i didn't search but i just gotta know.

dudes cought the hitch (bot on type) with their taurus and folded it downwards bending the unibody in two places. i don't know much about unibody bending cause you aren't supposed to bend em, right? so, is it trashed? unibody had two obvious kinks, hitch is bent down a good 3 inches. i don't even want to talk about the tailgate.

nice first post...

a bent unibody can be repaired to good as new by a good body shop

for a bent unibody? it shouldnt be totaled just because of that, being an older vehicle the cost of repairing it could, but not just because it is bent.

Well, I know there aren't any shops around my area that would touch a bent unibody..... I asked around about a year ago.

Check your local vo-tech that has an auto body program, the one here has an excellent body and frame shop that just loves to get nice and newer projects to work on...cheap too...

I worked at honda/mercedes/jag/land rover body shop for 2 years(pushing paper) and we were constantly working on em and telling the owners the truth about bent unibodies and frames.

sucks to hear about your XJ...i know i was pissed as hell when mine got wrecked (thankfully nothing important other than the wheel hub was bent, and alot of body repair...frame/unibody was fine)...but i baby the heck out of mine more than most do (even though i still go through my fair share of mud). I'd surprised if they didn't total it, but if they did and you can find a place that will bend it back to shape, you could probably buy it back from the insurance company for really realyl cheap.

If all else fails, i'd be whoopin ass on the people who destroyed your jeep (especially for havin BS insurance!).

ScorpionBoy
September 14th, 2006, 21:16
not sure they have bs insurance...yet. but suspect so. i am/was still using this as my dd and had some nice plans for wheeling the crap out of it later in life. it has two definite kinks where the hitch bolts to the body, one on each end of the hitch mount. sooo, i will let y'all know what happens.

I got rearended in an ice storm by 3 illegal mexicans. No licenses, no green cards, no insurance, nothing. Lucky for me there was no damage to me...(they squared my hitch and ball mount put a softball size hole right through the radiator, fan, and cracked the block of their 98 sebring. they were all 3 arrested and the sebring went to the impound.

SeanP

never drive around with the hitch and ball in place for this reason. it will transfer all the enrgy into the unibody and do more damage than if if bumper took more of the impact.

reminds, me, I have to take the hitch from marni's ZJ.

One of the reasons I put a Tomken rear bumper w/receiver on my 98. Been hit twice, once with the ball in while in a parking space at walmart, did a number on the girls radiator, once without it and still did major damage when that one went under.

I know this is about repairing the uni-body but how do you know they are illegal? Just becasue they are Mexican. If they had produced no papers at the scene that would be a starter. My insurance requires me to carry an "uninsured" policy for just this reason.

Any pics?? Give me a vin and some pics and ill write a quick estimate for you! If you go to a real body shop the deff. repair unibodys. Id say 60% of vehicles we work on require a pull on the frame machine.

Mine was rearended, same thing happened, hitch bent down and bent the "frame". It was able to be fixed up just fine, no reason to total it for that.

i like what i am hearing. i haven't even started modding this truck yet...dammit.

i know the guys were illegal because the officers told me. He said 'this is the illegal who hit you' (i groaned involuntarily) and then he said 'this is the registration of the car belonging to the other illegal' and i was really bummin then.

i will try and get some pics on here tonight after work. the guys over at FSB will be wanting to see also. they love carnage over there.

yep, i have that. think it is mandatory here. when i talked to my agent yesterday he said if their policy is bogus then to make a claim on mine. of course, i have a $1k deductible and i lose out on my cashback bonus (around $700/year) for not making claims in the last three years.

so was it the fact that there were probably 50 people in the taurus that increased the impact x50 that bent the unibody?

i once got sideswiped in gilroy by a guy who was here illegally and the police said they could not do anything baout it and let the guy go.

he didnt even have a drivers license, just a DMV ID.

That sucks, but hey, good time to learn about the unibody of your xj!

A friend of mine got hit by an illegal. He had a bunch of beer cans in the back of his truck but only had a few drinks...long story short...it was the illegals fault but the cops let them go (said they couldn't do anything about it) and charged my friend with an at fault dui accident.

:dunno:

Doesn't make any sense to me.

You sure know a LOT about your policy...very detailed information...EXCEPT whether you carry UIM. Check your card, dummy. Boohoo, you don't get your cashback bonus, but someone can plow into you and do damage...but you don't know whether you're covered. Either your story is BS or you're just an idiot. :D 'lol'

Back in '92, when I first got to Texas, two guys in a gold Taurus tagged the rear left of my '72 Grand Fury about 2100h one night. They tried to make a left-hand turn onto an I-45 north-bound off ramp. They stopped to have a look at the damage to the front left of their Taurus, so I swung around and went back to talk to them. Before I got out I wrote down their license plate number. I flashed my insurance card and asked them to show me theirs'. "No habla Ingles." I said (very slowly, with hand gestures), "We all wait here for police." They said, "OK." Got back into the Taurus and proceded down the ramp, south-bound on north-bound I-45. About a 1000' south they decided to turn around and go north on 45. I went up to a gas station and called the Sheriff's office. I listened in as the deputy who responded called in the plate #. Reported stolen in Houston about 1300 that day. The deputy turned to me and said, "Right. Well, I don't think we'll be seeing those guys again." I said, "No, I'm not going to plan on it." We shook hands and I thanked him for coming out. Next day I sprayed some clear Rustoeum on the damage.

hmm..I don't think that helped you much.

With a $1000 deduct and loss of reward, I'd give serious consideration to looking for a replacement. You'll have to sit down and look at the numbers. Get some quotes - they're usually free.

there are lots of illegals driving in the us and when they get caught after an accident they are usually let off. the police admit they cant do a damn thing and they are on their way.

i go south to baja 2-3 times a year and when driving down there it can be scary. i see guys driving with their families , no seatbelts and holding a cerveza in one hand. 2 years ago coming back through menandearo towards ensenada heading north i saw a puff of dust and then the rear of a van in the air. about 1/4 mile up a van crossed the center line and awent head on into a pickup.

my friends and i stopped and saw people strewn in different directions down a ravine. somehow the driver of the pickup got thrown to the bed and the van driver was hanging upside down in the van with seatbelt on. the van was full of empty bottles.

the carnage part was two vehicles smashed, i think one dead child who was laying face down in a field. the woman who was driving the truck was screaming because her face had a vertical slash and was spewing blood.

the driver of the van was snoring and hanging upside down.

later we saw two men laying side by side and apparently they were in the back of the pickup when it collided head on. they were ejected somehow ended up right next to each other. what was left of one guy was the size of a large hiking backpack, no arms and legs. the other guy had major head trauma and was dead.

the drivers down there really drive crazy. they seem to think that being macho and speed demons is the thing even with kids in the car.

we stayed at the site for 3 hours in the hot sun and had to explain what we saw to the police down there. the police said this was just one of many accidents that happen there each week.

because the police see this often in this area the police were super slow doing everything. even calling for ambulance. after a few hours the coroner had not even shown and the bodies started to smell. i never saw anything like it.

after that day i drive a lot slower when i go down to baja now.

one interesting thing is that on the toll highway Mexico Hwy 1 instead of guard rails they use either rocks or asphalt ditches. i would imagine those would cause more issues if someone were to hit them.

in the california central valley, friday afternoons can be an interesting time on the roads. often there are farm worker van accidents. they do not require them to have seatbelts so they install benches inside to seat many people. friday is a drinking day for many of the workers who have been working the fields all week long in the hot sun.

My tomken is 2x6 tube, it do not bend easy...and it's tied to my frame rails too.
Lines up real nice with my gas tank skd so if someone does go under they just lift me up bit... Oh well, back to soldering in those new ball valves in the bathroom...

got a call from their insurance guy first thing yesterday. they sent out a damage appraiser in the afternoon. so, i am guessing my boys had insurance! go figure!
appraiser dude says he thinks it is repairable. my brother in law is riding my ass to get it totaled. he claims that one a unibody is hit it is trashed. i dunno. i really want it fixed. besides, now it is even better for winter driving around here cause it has already been hit now.

Totalling a unibody largely depends upon unibody design and the level of damage to it - and whether it's just bent, or actually creased (which creates stress risers, even when straightened out. You can't get rid of a crease...)

Considering this is also a Jeep, you should be able to get unibody reinforcements after you get it straightened out (doesn't TNT Customs have something like that? Ties the LCA mounts all the way back into the forward spring hangers?) and transfer the useful strength out of the unibody member almost entirely, and keep them to locate the rest of the sheetmetal. Since it's not supposed to be pretty, and we don't care so much about weight (hey - Jeeps aren't designed to go fast, they're designed - at least, they used to be - to go everywhere) you could even weld up some structural steel to the unibody rails after you get it back.

"My crumple zone is your vehicle." I'm working on ideas to make that more of a reality - I'm not about to go buy a new car with all the tensile strength of wet cardboard, and that gets totalled after hitting a smallish dog. That's just stupid... Hell, the 2003 Taurus wagon that hit me (I wasn't in my truck, note...) this November past was totalled - but I knitted rather well. And I'm only 250#...
