Hello all, I am a brand new Jeep Cherokee owner. At about 4:30pm on 10/21 I bought my first XJ. Its a 99 with 118k miles, bone stock. I took it out today on a little shakedown run on some of the trails on Ft. Lewis. The trails are all very tame with a couple fun spots; nothing to write home about but it was fun for a first trip in a stock XJ.
Just 4 of many flex shots (or lack there of right now) to come...

Tomorrow, with the help of a buddy, I plan to remove my rear sway, install a transfer case skid, front tow hooks, and a quick disco. I plan to keep it simple, 3.5" lift, 31's, front locker to start, hitch, and maybe a winch, rocker replacements, and rear locker down the road.

Welcome, you have a nice clean looking jeep, there are a few people from the Ft. Lewis area on here. Your plans sound good.

Nice! Is that a stick or auto? I've been looking at a few jeeps that color with low mileage.

Thanks everybody. I really like the last gen XJ's too, plus they were the only ones I could find with decent mileage. Its an auto, I don't think I'd personally like wheeling with a 5spd, my buddy's got a 5spd Tracker he wheels and it seems like a lot of work (also has a 231 and 8.25). Its almost too clean, I know I'll be pissed the first time I get body damage, but I'm sure after that it won't matter near as much anymore; same with the first cuts I make on it...
Will def check out the m&g thread, I look forward to running trails and meeting everybody!

Armor that thing up.
I'd like to, believe me. Guess I'll just have to keep my eyes peeled for a set of THOR guards, or look for the next big group buy...that's all in the plans though.:lickout:

Thought of a question, maybe this should go in another section, but do any of you guys have experience with the new XJ's as far as needing a SYE? i.e. with a 3.5" RE lift will I need to do a SYE or will shimming the rear axle be enough? From the little I've read so far it seems like it recommended but not necessarily required...

I ran without one with a 4.5 inch lift and just shims for about a month or so, it was pretty annoying and I would suggest you get one.

getting an SYE requires a different drive shaft you might be able to use a front drive shaft though

Ill be in the market for an SYE pretty soon here, and Im probably going to get a SYE/DS package from Tom Woods. From what Ive heard and read, they are pretty much bullet proof and some of the best out there.
-Lyle
P.S. Maybe Im just blind, but I dont think we got your name. ;) Haha.

HA! That's the exact comment I've been waiting for this whole time. Its not yet, but, in time perhaps it will become 'uber'. Atleast 1/2 of it is right.
In all honesty though it just a term that is used pretty frequently in the Volkswagen community that I decided to use here.
But with the SYE kit you're talking about, do you need to provide any measurements or does Tom Woods just make up a kit based on the lift being used?

Oh, no i get your display name haha. I was talking about your ACTUAL name, lol.
And for the SYE, measurements will need to be taken.

I'm actually not in the military (I didn't make that clear), just have friends who are. The part of they base that we 'wheel' and fish on is actually open to the public, its out by the east gate where there is no gate anymore. So really anybody can go there but you better have a good reason to be there. You can get a pass that allows you access if you're a civilian, just have to have a military sponsor I think.

Well, its been almost 6 months since I got my Jeep so I figured it was time for an update. Nothing spectacular but I got my RE 3.5 SF lift today. Hopefully within a weekend or 2 I have it on. Pretty stoked. Got it from Full Size XJ whose got great prices. But, somehow I only ended up with 1 leaf...I think the UPS guy must have forgotten it or something because there were 6 total boxes but only got 5, so I'm expecting it tomorrow.
Pics for the hell of it...

When I ordered my lift UPS lost a leaf pack too, I stood out on the driveway the next day waiting for brown santa to show up. When he did I showed him what I was missing and politely demanded to search his truck for my missing part. He said no but they found it in Utah a week later, I had already received another one from the manufacturer and ended up with 3 leaf packs in the end. Good thing since they sucked and I had to build a bastard pack outta the 3rd one.

Yes, they are sweet tires. They did make a huge difference over worn out hi-way tires. Made it up some things at Tahuya I could before.

Luckily I didn't have that kind of experience, they 2nd spring showed up yesterday so all is good. He was probably just lazy and didn't want to lug another 70+ pound spring to my front porch. But all is good now, can't wait to get the lift on and start hitting the harder trails up here.
