about to replace my gearbox does anybody have any suggestions, something with really tight handling? not necessarily good for off roading ( my xj is 2wd). not from autozone either

Check out the new, improved junkyard thread, there are a multitude of steering boxes that will work for you. If you want to make a 2wd XJ handle try an MJ rear axle[spring under] & a Mustang II front end. Then of course the engine of your choice. Evidently you're already aware that Auto Zone is the Macdonalds of auto parts.
