I need some input from you guys/gals in this region.

I read all pages on the site with regard to gearing and I came up with a few choices; 3:73(low end for highway), 4:11's(in the middle) or 4:56's(upper end for high RPMS, but with plenty of torq). But I would like some input from the locals in the area running the highways and trials.

Here is my current set-up and details:

(1) 97, w/4.5 lift
(2) D 30 Front D 35 Rear
(3) MANUAL w/ABS w/3:07 gearing
(4) Currently running 31's and WILL NOT be going any larger on tires

My GOAL with gearing is to be able to run the Sister's and highway's without any serious lugging AND able to run trails with decent torq.

What are people running with Manuals, I am looking for a happy medium somewhere?

Do you mean local to Washington or local to the Moab area? I ran 31s with 4.56 in my 96 with auto and I hated it on the freeway, but loved it on trails. I hear manuals like deeper gearing so maybe that would work better for you. I would consider 4.11's a minimum with 31's.

By the way, don't waste money on the Dana 35. I would look for a good, used 8.25 under 100 and sell the D35 for scrap metal.

Local to the Evanston Wyoming and Utah area. We do not have the mountains out here like that area does.

The reason I placed this here, vice in the WA forum is I will be living up in Evanston within a year or so and I will be adding gears prior to moving.

Dont put gears in a dana 35 it is not worth the money. Like Isreal said put an 8.25 under it and put gears in that.

4:56's.....because you will eventually go to larger tires and because the elevation of Wyo and Utah will suck power.

Also, been there, done that. And don't invest a dime on the D35.

4.10's are correct for 31's for dual use

but like everyone else said. you'll go bigger.

even if you keep 31's..........
swap in a better rear axle (29spline 8.25 or d44)
then regear it to 4.10

I've run a stick with 31's and 3.73 gears. It was great when I was commuting but the gears were to tall for the more serious trails.
I'd go for 4.11 with 31's with a mixed use rig.

I have a D35 with 3.73 & True Trac and a 3.73 ring & pinion set for a D30....

for a manual:
4.56=37s
4.10=35s
3.73=33s
3.54=31s
3.05=stock
for an auto:
4.88=37s
4.56=35s
4.10=33s
3.73=31s
3.54=stock
i am new to runnin a manual, i just rebuilt my trans and did gears in my axles, like everyone has just told you, do not put any money into d35s, they are a waste of money, second, the reason you only need to put in 3.54s or 3.73s is because you manual trans is geared higher than the auto trans, i am running 35s and just pulled my trailer(2place atv trailer,empty) up parleys at 78 most of the time, the slowest i did was 62 because i got stuck behind a freightshaker. you could probably look on ksl or go talk to tera about axles and they would probably sell you some take offs from someone who swapped theirs out, or go to a junkyard and pull them yourself, you can just grab some axles out of an auto and you would be sittin great, cheap too.

Although I don't wheel as hard as some of these other guys, I run 4.11's in my D35 and it works good for the trails. On the highway with 31's, the RPM's aren't bad. The 4.11's keep the power up for passing grandma in her cutlass but keeps the Troopers off. I regularly do (everyday) 75-80 to work with this setup.
