OK....soooooo....uummmm.....like yeah.

It appears that I'm gonna have to make the '86 trail worthy. Before anyone makes any cracks about the 2.8 V6, don't. The engine is staying put (for now)....and I have no desire to sell the rig and get a 4.0L. I'm weird and like to do things differently.

That being said, I have decided to only do minimal, necessary upgrades for now (i.e. small lift, better tires, tow hooks). The lift is taken care of. I need to do something about front tow hooks though. Midian has an interesting idea about mounting them, but my "research" has told me that's a good way to crack the "frame". I'm cheap, but not above spending money in order to keep the fun rolling (I'd much rather spend $75 to keep the rig moving than have a group of people pissed at me cuz I'm cheap [read: poor]).

I was thinking of sucking it up and spending the $75 on C4x4's brackets, but figured I'd seek the combined wisdom of those who have done this search already (or might have something to sell cheaper :))

I thought about stealing the front receiver off Jennifer's and seeing if she noticed, but decided that wouldn't be real cool of me. :yap:

I'm gonna keep the ugly Smitty nerf bars on there to take some of the damage from rocks until I rip them off. Other than that, what else do I need to worry about upgrading?

I put a front reciever on mine. It was only about 120 or so.It bolts up nice and secure.

The C4x4 tow hooks and brackets are worth the $75.

I kinda like the idea of a front receiver. They make this dorky little skid plate that you can insert in it.

anything on your jeep, up to and including your jeep will be dorky, so the skid plate will blend right in!

meh...I'm now wondering if the money would be better spent on the FSJ instead of the XJ. Too many damn toys!

I got my tow hook brackets on ebay for $45 w/o the hooks which were $10 at the JY. The brackets are 1/4" real beefy.
I also like the combo of tow hook brackets and that tow plate thing from quadratec w/ the 2" reciever and mounts for a tow bar.

my $.02

I showed you how to install some on yours for real cheap.
And don't worry there is no welding at all. I am pretty sure you have tome kind of fab-ing skills.

uh...yeah...I have "tome" kind of fab-ing skills.

You realize that it was 9 months ago that you showed me how you had yours installed? From what I remember, you have a piece of plate inside the "frame rail" and hooks bolt to it thru the bottom. If this is correct, that puts the hooks in a position that the strap would be rubbing against the bumper.

Let's not forget that I'm more likely to got stuck and need the hooks than you are. :)

The straps never rub the bumper. The hooks are lower than that.

Ian this is the same type of front winch mount that Katy is using on her jeep and I had on my jeep before. Not much on ground clearance but it'll get you tow points and a place to put a winch. and for 85 bucks I would call dibs if I were you and work out payment!

it aint goin nowhere... let me know when you want it...

GB's right about the clearance it does lessen the approach angle...

Well, it isn't like I go over any hard stuff in the stocker. :)

After my Nov. rent is paid I'll be ready to do something. Is that ok?

So, what's the next thing that I need to upgrade? I had planned on abusing Jennifer's XJ, but since that isn't gonna happen, I'll have to destroy my own.
