So, i was wheelin' around today and i thought, man some of this stuff would be much easier on me and "ol' Red" if she had an auto trans, so how many of you guys wheel autos and how many wheel manuals.
you may select both if you have two rigs, just post up and specify what you use each for mostly and what you like/dislike about 'em

Manual.
Though I sometimes think the ideal way would be an AW4 with one of Brett's full-manual shift kit. Manual control with no clutch.

that would be nice, though i still think that thing looks like those shifters off of the gameroom racecar games....

Wheeled a manual for years, now run a auto. I got tired of breaking axles. The only thing I miss is compression braking on long downhills, but that can be fixed with a 1-2 shift mod.

Both of my Cherokee's are auto's. I prefer a manual for street driving, and an auto for offroad and towing. It's just one less thing to worry about. That, and my wife can't drive a manual to save her life...:laugh3:

Auto, cuz thats what I have, been thinking about Brett's manual /auto conversion, but with an atlas I still get ok engine braking in 1/2

I do manual. Have thought about an auto but I have a good "feel" as to when and what speed the tires will spin. With an auto do to the torque converter it's not as precise. I used to have an auto. There are time when I would prefer an auto. We'll see what me next one is. Probable AW-4 with Brett shifter.

I run an auto. I mean I'm no small guy but I can't quite reach to operate THREE pedals at the same time.

Easier on parts IMHO. Besides, I'm lazy too.

I learned to drive, and then wheel in a manual. My current rig is manual too, I'm just used to it. When I occasionally take my wife's auto XJ into the woods, I don't feel as "in-tune" with the machine.

My first cars were manual. Then my first 4x4s were manual.
25 years on I can't be bothered to shift it myself any more. Anything I've bought in the last 5 years has been auto. Auto in our XJs.
The Impreza is manual, but then it's more of a sports car than an appliance so I don't mind heel-and-toeing that.

The stick is sometimes a set-back on steep stuff, but it's just another challenge. I wouldn't have it any other way.
Besides, heel-toeing the XJ down through the gears is just fun. :D

Manuel. Oh wait, thats a mexican. :D
Stick for me. More of a challenge, but some situations, I wish it was an auto. Its fun ripping through the gears on a logging road or what not. My next one will be an auto though.

ooo, thats pretty nice
is this like your company or something, everyone calls them "Bretts shifters" i just figured they meant the one you used..
so you develop these shifters for auto changeovers?
thats pretty cool, have to say i like the whole idea... to bad i am a broke highschool kid
eh, maybe someday, ill just stick with the ax-15 for now

Suck it up Opie. Even the guys who run auto's still like the low gearing of an atlas. I run a nv 3550 manual, swapped it in after blowing 5 AW-4 auto transmissions.:explosion I'll never go back to wheeling an auto.

Auto in one, manual in others.
Here, in Spain, we used to buy the cars with manual. My XJ of course is aut. but my new SAAB 95 SW is manual (It's more funny).
Excuse my bad english and greetins from Almerķa (south-east of Spain).

I think I might enjoy wheeling an auto more...i'd be able to pay more attention to what's going on around me than "am i in the right gear at the moment?"

I'm running a manual (AX 5) in my latest project ('85 XJ 2dr.) I have wheeled both and as y'all know they both have + and - depending on your "sitiation". This one's a man. 'cause she's only got a hopped up 4 banger and I need all the power it's got to give! desertfriedjeep

I don't dislike my 5 speed, it's nice to have engine braking.
Sucks for a DD though, wish I had an auto for that.
Feaking left leg is stronger than my right.

My Pathfinder was an auto, and it was especially nice in the rocks. My XJ is manual, and it definitely has its advantages on downhill sections.

x2. I almost never need to use the brakes. I just downshift all the way into first and give a little tap on the middle pedal to stop.
