M96 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser

Is that the 6.5 Grendel round I keep hearing so much about?

igotanxj
October 10th, 2008, 11:00
No, its different. This is an old WWI/WWII rifle from them swedes/norway. I had a gunsmith trim it down from a 29" barrel, add a scope and a different stock, and change the action to a more modern design. M96 means model 96, it was designed and put into production in 1896. Apparently this cartridge is still pretty popular in europe, but most people here tend to go with the 30 caliber hunting rifle route.

No, it's the 6.5x55mm cartridge, also called the Swedish Mauser, that the Swedes (and Finns) used from the 1930's till NATO. Fantastic cartidge- far and away my favorite and the reason I have three rifles chambered for it. I really wish the US military had gone with the Swede rather than the combo of the .223 and .308, the swede is a perfect combination of the two and proved itself in WWII. A 6.5x55 AR/M16 would really be a Russian killing thing of beauty.

Before I die/the Obamination, I want a CZ and Ruger #1 (limited edition from last year) in 6.5x55.

Nope, not grandfathered. The mags are, however I just built the AR less than a year ago. It is perfectly legal in CA. If you want one, pm me and I'll give you the details.

BTW. The G22 is a great gun. I carried one for years and plan on getting one next.

Yeah, mine still has the tag of the Swiss citizen/soldier who owned it under the butt plate. No, I haven't contacted them.

That rifle is a real straight shooter. Those guys in Switzerland sure know how to build a rifle. I picked it up for $140 and it's one of my favorites.

I couldn't believe the accuracy with the iron sights. As for contacting the previous owners, I've read where guys took detailed photos of the rifles and sent them to the previous owner to see. I haven't heard of anyone getting anything but pleasant responses back. In some cases it was the family (because the owner had passed) and they were very grateful for the photos and contact. I knew one guy who sent a grouping target to the PO. :)

I'm pretty sure it was .357, and I think it was a marlin.

I think he was interested in the cowboy stuff, he modified the trigger and smoothed up the action. He sold it to buy a 30/30 I think but he is trying to buy it back now.

Had one on my M4 in Iraq. Loved it. Worked great and didn't get caught on anything. We called them 'gansta grips.' A lot of times, if I needed both hands for something and didn't want it swinging around just on the sling I would take the grip and stuff it down between my mag pouches on my vest. It would hold pretty well and take some of the weight off my right shoulder when my back would start hurting.

They tried to tell us that in the Army...but after thousands of rounds holding the mag well with part of my hand on the mag AND using the mag as a monopod, I don't buy it. :D:D:D It was probably true on early versions, but I have yet to hear of it outside military teaching. :)

I cant wait to get my LTC. I did the full course for the training but then moved out of MA before I got the LTC and the training cert expired, at least I got it through a friend's father for free so I didn't waste the money. However now that I am back in MA, I know a local officer who does the safety training who I can probably just go through the final exam with again briefly (to prove I still know my stuff) and he will issue me a new cert on the spot.

Immediately following that I will be getting my LTC, followed by driving to western MA and picking up a S&W 686P. Then I will be picking up the rifle, haven't decided on what I want yet :D I will be sure to post as soon as I start my collection though

LTC= CCP? Concealed carry permit?
LTC = licence to carry

In MA there are 2 classes of LTC, one allows un-concealed carry only, one allows concealed carry. It's up to the police chief (or issuing officer, forget who actually has to issue it) whether or not to issue a A or B class LTC.

well concealed is harder. With a concealed (class A I think it is) you can carry in open site or concealed. with un-concealed you have to carry in open site.

Hmmm that sucks...

Here in In-Dee-an-uh we only have a one type of CCD which entitles you to do both. They are are fairly easy to obtain, you have to chat with the police and have a 90 day period in between when you apply and when you receive it. But other than that, its simple.

Here you can get a FID (Firearms ID Card) which allows you to buy/carry rifles/shotguns. Once you turn 21 you can get the LTC and carry handguns. In order to get either you need to take a firearms safety course which can cost a few hundred dollars, but oh well. I got it free once before, hopefully can get it re-newed for free again soon.

I assume there is a 30-90 day wait until the card comes in, but I think it depends on how quick the dept works.

I went through the hoops to get mine a few years ago. Then I moved to another state. Per regulations I have to turn in my old one to Louisiana, wait 6 months, then apply for one in Colorado. I don't have a job here yet and can't afford the application process, and my 6 months isn't up yet. I have decided that I'll carry anyway, it's my right as spelled out quite clearly in the bill of rights. I will not be disarmed by an unconstitutional law.

If its a non-automatic assault rifle you just have to have an FID.

But I agree, MA sucks for gun laws. I lived in VA for a few months and I could have walked into any store and bought any long arm I wanted. I should have done so before I moved back up here :(

x2

Non-Automatic = "Semi-Automatic" or "Bolt Action"
No such thing as a Semi Auto "Assault Rifle"

Just to be picky:
1 - An "assault rifle" is fully automatic.
2 - no matter what state you live in, you have to get federal TAX approval to purchase one(yes, the paperwork for the rifle is a tax stamp)
3 - some states have barred the possession of any fully automatic weapon, or destructive device, regardless of federal tax status.
4 - some extremely stupid state legislators have managed to "define for legal purposes" quite a few items as "assault rifles" or "firearms". I understand the great state of california managed to class several bolt action rifles as "assault rifles", and one of the east coast states defined pepper spray as a "fire arm". That doesn't make it true, or correct.

Sorry, I had a few drinks prior to posting that :)

I understand that assault rifles are fully auto, i was just being a bit dumb at that moment. In MA you cannot own a fully automatic rifle without a machine gun permit... which is quite dificult to get, though there are ways around it (being a registered collector is one way I think).

Not a big fan of the Streamlight, but it does the job. If I could buy another, I would go with the Surefire X300.
