Looking at getting rid of the "toyrolla". Need something good on snowy roads/dirt roads. Gas mileage isn't too much of a factor (hopefully better than my 89 on 33's). I want to stay jeep. Right now the lady's looking at a 02 liberty for $5000,130,000km's (rock chipped to hell),but I was pushin for a grand cherokee. what should I be looking for or stayin the hell away of? Thanks in advance. kinda trying to stay under 8k

He is trying to stay under 8K a Compass would be outside his limits anyway.
For 8K you could get a really nice ZJ. My good friend has a 4.0 and a 5.2. I don't know much about the 5.9, but I've driven a Dakota with one in it and it was a hoss. The 4.0 feels pretty anemic in the ZJ in comparisson to my XJ. But, the 5.2 is very nice. Since it's probably not going to get wheeled hard the D35 or Alum. D44 would both be fine for your application. Besides that I don't know of any severe problems with his ZJs he broke an axleshaft in a 4x4 race, but it was a stock D30 on 33s so won't really affect you. Happy hunting!

Down here in NJ/PA 97/98 ZJ's are cheap, with $8K as a max you could buy at least two in good condition, most in NJ are garage kept. Don't know what your area is like.
