My buddy emailed me some pix from John bull. They took an xj with a 6.5" lift down it, and he was using his sliders alot, so it Inspired me to get some.
Just ordered some from rough country......and I cant wait.

He DOES do bitchin' work... he went a little further on mine by my request and cut out my rockers, and welded in 2x6 (note, not 2x4 with a 2x2 piece welded onto it :D) and then welded a nerf bar onto the outside. Looks bitchin'!

Yea they're welded on... basically you're looking at ABOUT the same amount in the end. No shipping, plus you'd have to pay someone to weld them on. So Billy's at $350 installed are a fair price

Your buddy was a pretty nice guy, I'm not so sure he has 6.5" of lift though.

I led the group in front of him. There were 9 rigs, not 3 or 4, and a whopping 2 got stuck. He may have felt a need to exaggerate that number as I broke my winch pulling the land rover in your picture up, and had to bring another rig in to winch him.

http://www.shadowco.org/~cal/offroad/pics/JohnBull-9-08

:EDIT:

I looked at your pic again. The 'stuck' rig pictured didnt even get stuck, the one before him did. After getting -through- the obstacle he took a strap to avoid damage, considering he was running John Bull in a stock land rovery discovery with no lockers and street tires. :)

haha...that's weird that you were right in front of them. So you prolly met my sister and her boyfriend (the blonde girl and the asian guy). Then Mike, the guy with the chevy monster. Small world.

His xj has a 6.5" lift with 35s, at least thats what he's always told me. do you have pics of that run?

I met a bunch of people that day. I was hiking the trail and had some guys 14 year old son driving my rig. Good times all around.

true that!! .......... its been a while since i was up there but i always thought the harder line up the ledge was on the right & the easier on the left.
Its the other way around now.

Later that day on JB we followed a bunch of shorties, they stacked the heck out of a few obsticles, that in my honest opinion really didnt need it. Their rigs would of done fine with out.

oh well.... To each, their own!

Amazing !!!

Not really. He had rock rails, followed instructions well, and had two rather decent spotters on the run.

There was another group of JK rubicons coming down the trail that was _really_ messed up. One had only front wheel drive, and he was towing one that had no drive at all - 3 broken driveshafts.

So I happen to come across this thread and notice a bunch of pictures of my rig haha. The xj is mine and you guys were right it is 5.5" of lift. I guess those facts get a little confused when a friend is telling another friend who I've never met haha. Anyways it was a fun day and Cal is right, the land rover in the picture got through that obstacle much faster then the previous two ones that were racing each other up the section at 0 mph, that took a while haha. Just thought I would clarify about my rig, and for the record I didn't stack rocks they fell back into the hole that way =)

My father and I have issues working on the same thing at the same time (we argue like a married couple).

I was working with an SCLR member named Nathan. Nice guy, he was in one of the Rubicon's on that run.

Out of slightly more than idle curiosity (and an urge to poke fun..) .. where did they fall from? :) That land rover went through without them 5 minutes before?

Ok don't ask pointless questions haha, but if i remember correctly that land rover that "went through" there 5 minutes before was attached to another vehicle pulling it through so we'll just call it even. I didn't feel like attempting various lines to get up without stacking when we had guys behind us that had been waiting for close to 2 hours. Get up and get movin was my motto.

I'm pretty sure that AJ offers discounts too Naxja also. He's a sponsor.

Looking at the pictures of the rough country sliders, they appear to limit the damage to 2 dents in your rocker where the tubes from the frame pass under the rocker before the bend. I haven't seen them in person, but if the tube doesn't hug the rocker lengthwise you will take damage when it levers up into the rocker. Just from the pictures and my experience with AJ's I think AJ has a better design. Maybe there's a reason RC gets a bad rap from the socal guys, probably because we take our junk to the hammers to see what breaks. :)

Man, they stacking John Bull again? :(

scottmcneal
September 26th, 2008, 19:30
You want the ones that bolt to the frame and pinch seam under the door.. RC doesn't look likes it mounted to that seam. I could be wrong, but the pick looks that way to me... JCR an AJ's mount to the seam, i think hillbillys does to..I have seen his their nice, an heavy duty..

From the looks of it, one good hit like at 4:30 here in this video, and you'll have nice messed up rockers.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2wwPiLGtzg

Not a scratch from that hit. :)

AJ rockrails with the thinner .120 outer tubes not the newer improved thicker ones. He added those after I sent him pics of how we use them. Of course, if you're wheeling in IL, then the point is moot. :)

Are you saying with the RC slides, or without the RC sliders my rocker panel would be toast?
I was talking to a guy at a local shop, and he said that he's been using them on his rig for a while and they've held up fine.

My wheeling is going to be in So Cal when I get back from school. But I am planning a couple trips to the badlands, in Attica Indiana while I'm still here for school.

I have AJ's, but from what I hear he's absolutely flogged and backordered for half a century or more. I have landed hard on my bars, and slid all over on them. Not the slightest bit of damage.

i made some out of old paper towel tubes, taped together end to end. i glued em to the rockers and rattle canned em black. you cant even tell and they work great, really cheap to replace.

Yeah, I gave him some feed back and sent him pictures and he modified them a bit. He's pulled them in a little more under the rocker, and then gives the option of thicker outer tubes. Outer tubes used to be .120 and well, I've beat the piss out of mine. No rocker damage, but my outer tubes are thrashed. :) I use them as a pivot all the time. If you've orderd them in the last year/year and a half, you get the newer thicker outer tubes. Here's the thinner stuff.

I'm saying that from the pictures, it doesn't look like a good design. It looks like the RC sliders come out from the "framerail" and make a 90 degree bend to follow outside the rocker.

It looks like the part that comes out from the framerail goes right under the rocker, so when you land hard on the rock rail, it will lever up and the tubes that go under the rocker will put two nice dents in your rocker where they pass under it. With AJ's, the square tube runs under the rocker and it bolts to the pinch seam. if you press up on the square tube the force is spread along the whole length of the rocker and you don't get damage. He doesn't have any bars passing under the rocker perpendicular to it.

Where's this local shop? I can guarantee there are no trails in IL that even compare to what we have in Socal or the southwest. If it was an IL shop, then yeah, they'll hold up just fine for the ocasional tree from the side.

AJ does rails like once a week and tries to stay ahead on the rails as those are his bread and butter. Bumpers take FOREVER though. :)

The shop is in Southern Illinois, and I'm no saying hat there are a whole lot of trails out here, But theres some good OHV areas within driving distance. I'm takin a trip to the Badlands in Indiana in a week or so, and thats where I'll put the sliders to the test.

If the rails do bend up and smack my rockers, then It wouldnt be too hard to weld on some kind of pinch seam mount. There's a guy here who has been buggin me to let him fab some stuff for my rig, so I can let him have at it.

markw
September 27th, 2008, 17:06
I'm just saying why risk it to save a couple bucks. You'd need a bar that runs under the rocker from front to rear to prevent it. I grew up back there, and nothing back there compares to what's out here. :)
