Was 1997 the first year a non electric fan was offered on xj?

Just like the title says. What years did this option come on?

All xj's (4.0 engined at least) came equipped with a mechanical (engine mounted) and electric auxiliary engine cooling fan.

87 & later 4.0 with A/C, or virtually all 4.liter Cherokees came with electric fans. Do the non air cars have an electric fan, or a different shroud? The only non air 4.0 XJs I've seen in recent years have been in the wrecking yards & the radiators are always gone. I've never seen a non air H.O., only Renix.
