View Full Version : When Are Things Going To Get Really Bad?

Jester99

With what has happened in the last few days with the financial market, when are things going to start getting really bad in this country? Everything is just going up and up and then violently crashing. Something has got to give...I need to know when I should quit buying Jeep parts and start investing in weapons and food.

Just heard the Federal Government is planning on bailing out AIG with an 85 billion dollar loan, but with what? Care to guess where that money is probably coming from? I have a very dim outlook for this country. There is no president that can bail us out of this one. I have a 6th sense about these things. Am I the only one who sees nothing but bad things coming for this country? I think the Sale Pending sign on America is about to turn into Sold...

It is not bad.

Not even a little.

Do you have a job?

Are you starving?

Can you stand on a street and shout crazy things that you believe?

It can get a lot worse.

Well it is good for ME currently, but I don't think it is for a lot of people. A lot of people are having to decide on skipping dinner and filling up their gas tanks instead so they can get their kids to school in the morning. I was talking more specifically about in the near future. My grandmother is 83 and lived through the Great Depression and is still pretty coherent and lively. She has told me all of the signs are there and we are on the threshold of another.

I personally am fine. I live with my dad and go to school. I've got just about everything taken care of at the moment. I work part time, pay my car and health insurance, credit card bills etc. with my money. All my basics are covered. Millions of others like my friends are not as fortunate. I worry and care a lot about the other people of this country. I just wanna help them in anyway that I can...

I'm not really worried about the economic situation. For the last two years we were told it was going to be hell RECESSION GUARANTEED and instead the economy kept on growing. Before that it was MCI and Enron and the dot-com bubble and zomg the economy is going to collapse then 9/11 and two wars and wtf we can't take this much stress... and we pulled through that too.

That's not to say that everything is just the way I want it or anything, just that fears of economic collapse aren't really justified by the last couple of weeks.

I'm doing pretty good. We're also still a world power. It is possible for things to get worse, but I'm not going to pretend I know what's going to happen in the future.

This country is screwed if Obama gets elected. He will take away your guns along with the rest of our freedoms. and like past democrats, he would continue to praise the incompetent while screwing the working man making this country compleatly dependent on forien countries just like clinton had started to do. sorry for the rant but i hate democrats, especially Obama.

Well, HP plans on laying off half their work force and half of those are from the US.
I have not seen any direct hire jobs in the last 3 months, all are agencies with what I figure are bogus jobs just so they can fill their data bases with people so they can jump on the jobs faster than the next head hunter agency. Applied for a local PC job up here, the fax machine was busy from 8am to 11pm on a sunday, I let it auto dial all day, it did not get through till 2pm monday.
I get 40 or more email resumes a week and I'm not hiring, we are talking resumes from recent grads to people with 15 years experience. I used to get 1 or 2 a year emailed blind that way. These people are going through the phone book looking for work.
A neighbor and his family just walked away from a house they built and lived in for the past 15 years, packed a U haul and headed for myrtle beach where he got a job in real estate, I helped tie his wifes car down on the trailer this afternoon.
People up here are loosing their homes left and right and it's tight, very tight, gonna be even tighter once it gets cold and those people have to buy oil and gas for heating their homes.
There are close to 9,000 homes on the market here, normal is 2,500.

The only people I see doing well up here are body shops and auto repair places.
The local big employer, Tobyhanna Army depot started hiring students direct out of the local college, ESU, they put them through a special course that lasts 3 months and then pulls them right in, eliminates having to pay experienced people of even give them a shot at the jobs. Makes the vet preference a joke.
I'm already starting to job search back in NYC so I can get a full time job again. The big box stores have practically started giving away service calls, even the local ISP has started a field service division and between Staples, Bestbuy, a small operation does not stand a chance when they can undercut my prices by 90%.

Maytag closed a plant today 700 jobs sent to Mexico. Last month got word my pension fund was going belly up and my annuity that I am not eligible for for four more years was cut in half. My other investments took a couple of hits in the stock market a few days ago...:bawl: :bawl:

But you wanna know what is really cool! I'll be wheeling with some of the best people on earth in about three weeks! :guitar: and I hope to see you all there!

I posted this yesterday on another forum, but it's still kinda relevant.

I'm in an interesting spot, as the company I work for has its main office in Germany, with the parent company in Denmark.

The dollar-to-euro conversion is at the best it's been in months. Since our books are done in US$, we're doing extremely well.

The other aspects are the businesses I deal with. Steel mills are expanding all over the country. Production in general is growing...even places like General Motors and Chrysler are expanding their lines and increasing product output. Granted, a lot of that is because they've consolidated their focus onto fewer products...but for us, we're getting a shit-ton of business.

Food & beverage is growing immensely. Automated packaging and processing equipment is a huge market right now.

Material handling...recycling equipment, cardboard stackers, paper mills, textiles...all growing.

It's just interesting for me to see both sides of it, because I tend to deal with the OEM's and 'supply' part of the supply/demand curve.

I've also experienced scrap steel going from $18/100lbs to $5.50/100lbs in the last few months. That concerns me. The price of a barrel of crude doesn't, really.

People hate having economic conversations with me. :D

Very true. Jobs are out there, just not the one's you may want.

I heard they are talking about dropping the interest rates again. I think the housing market was out of control and this is the result. Gas prices were insane, now look at the price of a barrel of oil. None of us like going through this stuff but if we saved our money and had a year's worth of backup, would any of us really care what the economy did? You could get a job making 1/2 what you are making now, and that year's worth of backup would last a couple of years, or more.

Save your money for the bad times. Remember the ant and the cricket. Have I saved? Hell no, I'm stupid. :D

What is going to be the down fall of this country is the division of its people. We are a divided country and that’s how the people in control want us. The government is not for the people any more, they are for themselves and corporate America.
The current administration has failed its people miserably. Our borders are wide open, the economy is in shambles, our dollar is the lowest it’s ever been and family foreclosures are at an all time high.
Now before you get all defensive my grandpa fought in WWII and worked thru the great depression. My real father fought and died in Vietnam, he never got to see me. I fought in desert storm. I caught a piece of a scud in my shoulder and was clean up on blood highway. I believe in small government and that no one owes me or my family of four young children and my stay at home wife a dam thing. Americas' foundation is crumbling and we are standing around blaming each other. Jpcherokeekid, do you really hate democrats? Is that how we are going out? Wake up sheeple. I would rather take action today then have my children inherit our blind fate.

I agree with splendidyj, the gov does want people divided, by the rich and the poor. The gov's goal is to break the back (and bank) of the middle class, why else is the middle class paying for the rest of the worlds problems? As far a certain party or president changing the way things are operating, I don't believe it will make a difference. They all have their marching orders and the smiley faces they are supposed to put on for the country but the agenda has been chosen and we are all screwed. Look at the global climate and the way other countries have been downtrodden, take away the guns so they can't revolt and break them financially. Your kids version of doing well is going to be vastly different than yours, surviving, owning a car and being able to put gas in it will be happiness. I know everyone is having a knee jerk reaction, I think it will take a long time for a big fall, they'll keep things rolling along enough to squeeze all they can out of the people. Just my humble rant....

More information has been coming out the past couple of days about these economic problems/bailouts and exactly who had a hand in trying to fix them and who actually made the problems worse. I'll keep this brief and to the point. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are essentially the love children of Democrats. Republicans tried on a number of occasions to reign in these institutions because they were out of control, but the Congressional Democrats blocked every attempt. In 2005, John McCain had warned about the economic consequences if they were left unchecked. Again, Democrats in congress blocked his attempt. Don't take my word for it; research the topic, read the history, find out what the stakes were and for whom.

2008-83 = 1925.... Sounds like Grandma was a very observant four year old or still lies about her age like 99.9% of the ladies out there. :kissyou:

I have been watching the signs for the last four years, just as in the Great Depression those that benefit the most will be those who were responsible all along and those who have cash to capitalize. Remember the Great Depression was hard on most but great for others. Industries must look for changing markets in this very interesting time.

the Great Depression had like 35% unemployment.
thats when you start to worry. we're at 5-6%..nothing to sweat.

I believe the biggest culprit was the skyrocketing home prices
for the last 15 years. It had to correct itself.
It was inevitable. With Fannie and Freddie getting spoon fed by the Treasury,
we should see people getting their mortgages in order.
less forclosures, more current homes on the market being sold,
then...things should look better.
other sectors look good.
take advantage of the low prices of some things while you can.

one last thing you can do to get the gas prices down is to vote.

There are many similarities to the Great Depression in today's economy, I have to ask, what did we learn from it?

The US is in a very volitile state and the prosperity that this country allows and invites, also leads to greed and corruption......both personally and within our government.

The "progressives" of the New Deal era had an agenda that is very similar to the progressive "Hope and Change" mantra.

This should be required reading. http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/08/24/arts/idbriefs25C.php

Don't want history to repeat itself? Learn from our mistakes and make better choices, personally and in those we elect to run out country.

The depression was triggered by a dirty deal in congress. But we are in a possition where one bad mistake and we would be in one again. The gas prices are due to China going from one out of 100 having a drivers license to 1 out of 3. They are driving up the price of copper, steel, gas and cement. I hope your grandma is wrong. But we could all learn from our elders.Well it is good for ME currently, but I don't think it is for a lot of people. Finally, someone who is actually aware of what is going on in this country!!! Subscribing to parties like Repulican, Democratic, Green etc are futile. There is no president or politician that can save us. Presidents, Congressmen, Senators, Representatives etc are merely actors on the world stage. They don't really have any power, just acting like they do to fool the American public and the rest of the world. The real power lies with people like Rupert Murdoch, The Rockefellers, The Rothchilds, The Bilderberg Group. They own oil, media, and major corporations. These people will stop at nothing to further their agenda of a world takeover. People like George Bush, McCain, Obama, Rumsfeld, Cheney are just puppets on a string. If you really want to know what these people have in store for America, check out the Project For A New American Century @ http://www.newamericancentury.org

Look into the Open Border Policy and the North American Union. The steps for these have already taken place. Only one mainstream reporter has had the courage to talk about this and that man is Lou Dobbs.

Here is a brief video summarizing PNAC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwJqAKIG_c8

Many of you Republicans will think this is Propaganda. IT IS NOT. I challenge you to read the PDF file Rebuilding America from newamericancentury.org. All of this information is contained in this document unbiased and fair.
