hey everyone, i got a list a page long (about $3,500 of stuff) of junk I gotta do on my XJ, involvoing 35s, 7" of lift, new steering and axles as well as fixing some odds and ends. I live in Greenville going to East Carolina University but i am from raleigh and im going back there for christmas. I have limited tools, thoughi do have some good ones. I have these...
-air compressor
-air ratchet
-weeeek ass impact wrench
-torque wrench
-cheap ass gear puller (good for stubborn hubs)
-the 35mm socket that every jeep household should own
-breaker bar, probably some other random stuff

I need a lot more than that though, i need to be able to jack the jeep up pretty high so maybe some more jack stands will help. Also need like a 900lb impact wrench, a pitman arm puller would be a good idea too and definitly a ball joint press. if anyone can help me out and let me use their tools for a few weeks while im on christmas break whether i borrow them or use their garage it would help me out a lot, i got no problem throwin in a couple cases of beer to cover the favor ;)

msg me if ya want! need help guys for real.... if i dont get this work dont, the jeep wont be driveable next semester, i NEED it to be driveable so i can go to my job next semester otherwise ill probably sell it.

Sorry man, Ive been there, I don't have the tools either. I had to go to autozone, use rent a tool, you leave a deposit, and when you bring the tool you get the money back.
Might try that, otherwise idk what to tell you.

Sorry man... but most of the stuff you've listed is cheap... Jackstands from Northern Tool are around $20.00/pair... Pitman Arm puller, etc.... $12.00/each..

You dont have to do it w/ air tools.. just pick up a set of sockets from sears or something..

I assure you, you NEED typical hand tools, they'll get used on the trail again, etc. Are you sure you're capable of swaping axles, lift, etc. Especially w/ a deadline to get it back running...

Agreed.

I'd like to say something about the recent influx of "need help installing ___" threads that have popped up, I may end up catching flak for this but I don't care. Most of the people requesting the help come back after the thread has been up for not even a full day and start basically bitching that nobody has offered to help. Let me say this, people like helping people who help themselves. Does that make sense? I mean, if you bought 3500 of stuff with no means at all to install it, that sounds like a bad decision to me. If you bought 3500 of stuff and you have the means to install even half of it but the rest is more difficult stuff that your average joe can't install, then sure ask away and most likely you will get help. People just can't expect for everything to be handed to them. In your case where you are just asking for the tools, that is a lot for some people. I'll help anybody all day long install stuff but loaning out my tools is a stretch depending on how well I know you and I know I'm not the only one who feels that way.

There is a difference between needing help and being helpless. Sorry, I had to get that off my chest. I mean I feel bad for people who buy a bunch of stuff and can't install it, but you probably shouldn't have bought it in the first place if that is the case. Then I stop feeling bad when I see attitudes come out.

Ditto on the loaning out tools, I asked for advice recently, just based on experience. But ended up figuring it out. I loaned out 4 jackstands not long ago and only got 3 back.
I gotta agree, buy the jackstands, they will come in handy over and over.
As for the pitman arm puller, rent a tool from autozone is definatly handy.

You might as well not buy the beer and get the tools, with rent a tool you get all your money back as long as you dont break the tool. Ive rented coil compressors from them probably 5x.

Okay jackstands i have 3 and 2 jacks i really didnt need them, but getting it a bit higher off hte ground would be great. Im having to rent a storage shed to do my work, that is costing me $100, so i wont be able to buy a new track bar ill be using my old one. As far as "begging for help", i need a powerful impact wrench, i loan my tools all the time and my impact wrench is onl 180psi, i need a bigger one but i guess ill just have to go spend $500 and then return it which is what i really dont want to do but oh well. as for the pitman arm puller and ball joint kit yes i will be renting those. and that price is saying i have 3500 of stuff do do on my jeep, just like it says. it is not saying i just spent 3500 on parts now i need a place to do it. thanks everyone

Sorry man but you get no sympathy from me... I've built several jeeps and assisted with building others... Not one time have I used an impact wrench... it's just not needed and more often than not will cause more problems than good.....

i'm all for doing stuff cheap, and building your own rig... but if you have $3500 of stuff, then i'd say you could possibly pay a shop to install it... then you could blame them if it doesn't work out :yelclap:

i've been working on my flattie quite a bit the past two months... and i am having to pay fabricator to do a lot of my work, because i don't have a welder, plasma cutter, nice air compressor, etc... and when i started to build this, i decided to pay him, instead of buying tools, because even with tools, i wouldn't know what to do for a lot of the build...
