There are no specific laws requiring a bumper in AZ.

However, ARS 28-981A2 states that you are not permitted to drive your vehicle on public roadways unless: "The vehicle is in a safe mechanical condition that does not endanger the driver or other occupant or a person on the highway."

Generally this law applies to extreme cases of vehicle neglect, but if you're being really, really stupid and catch the eye of a LEO who's had slow day, you might get stopped and this might be added to the ATTC. ;)

mine doesn't have a rear bumper, but I am trying to get one. I don't like the way it looks without it!

Sorry to hijack, but what about doorless/mirrorless?

I'm thinking those will just fall under that very vague law already mentioned...

But does AZ have any oddball ones that we should look out for?

You need a driver side mirror.

I thought Arizona law just requires "a mirror" that allows a clear view to the rear or some such language. There's tons of Wrangler driving around AZ with just the windshield mirror. I prefer to have a drivers side mirror as well, so I do.
If there is a driver's side mirror requirement, enforcement seems to be lacking in AZ.

OK, I had to go find it. This is the language I was thinking of. 28-956. Mirrors
A motor vehicle that is constructed or loaded in a manner that obstructs the driver's view to the rear of the vehicle from the driver's position shall be equipped with a mirror located in a manner to reflect to the driver a view of the highway for a distance of at least two hundred feet to the rear of the vehicle.

As long as was there I looked for bumper info and did not see anything

Haha, I think AZ is both lax about it's enforcement, and lacking in it's laws... No complaints here except that there are some vehicles that should not be allowed anywhere near the streets...

What's funny is that I was pulled over once for having a burnt out running light (brake light still worked though). The cop couldn't stop me for anything else, but I was in a bad neighborhood and my limo tint windows make me a suspect... Boy was he surprised when he saw a blond hair, green eyed, glasses wearing white boy in the drivers seat... I had all my rock band and xbox stuff in the back too, haha...

All the courts I have dealt with have said if you have window tint on the back window you have to have a side mirror as the rear is now obstructed.

I have also heard judges say if a vehicle is not up to federal standards then the vehicle is in violation of 28-921.A.1.b. This includes mirrors, stop lamps, seatbelts, bumpers. Remember a state can only tighten federal laws not loosen them.

28-921. Applicability of equipment requirements
A. A person shall not:
1. Drive or move and the owner shall not knowingly cause or permit to be driven or moved on a highway a vehicle or combination of vehicles that:
(a) Is in an unsafe condition that endangers a person.
(b) Does not contain those parts or is not at all times equipped with lamps and other equipment in proper condition and adjustment as required in this article.
(c) Is equipped in any manner in violation of this article.
2. Do an act forbidden or fail to perform an act required under this article.
B. This article does not prohibit the use of additional parts and accessories on a vehicle if the use is not inconsistent with this article.
C. The provisions of this article with respect to equipment on vehicles do not apply to implements of husbandry, trailers used solely in the operation of a farm for the transportation of the unprocessed fiber products on the farm or from the farm to a cotton gin, road machinery, road rollers or farm tractors except as made applicable by this article.
D. Notwithstanding subsection C of this section, a farm tractor equipped with an electric lighting system shall display at all times mentioned in section 28-922 a red tail lamp and either multiple beam or single beam head lamps meeting the requirements of sections 28-925, 28-941 and 28-943.

When it comes to enforcement you are dealing with a state that grew so fast over the past few years the state, county, and local governments have not been able to keep up with services. Meaning you have understaffed departments that are so busy running to calls for service they do not have time to stop all the cars out there that break the law. There is very few departments out there that are fully staffed.
