View Full Version : Why does everyone hate the SuperSwamper Thornbirds?

I know everyone hates the thornbirds, but for the years I've been reading this site I have yet to find a reason. Is it simply because they look goofy? Or is there a serious design flaw that everyone except me knows about?

They are an all terrain tire. Junk.

Not everyone needs a MT. I'm switching over to ATs very soon. The wheeling we have around here does not demand a MT.

I have run them, they look cool, but they suk offroad. Either get a real AT or go with something like a bfg MT.

There performance isn't what you would expect. Its not like they are the worst tire out there, but for what you pay and what seems to be everyones expectations, they are a ripoff and a letdown. It's like my buddy's lifted F-350 superduty, looks mean, cost a lot, and wont make it where I can make it on the trails around here.

I've found they are too stiff to flex nicely when aired down, they are noisier than a tard in a pile of pots and pans, they wear out quickly, the lumps on the side make a racket on your control arms and finally, they are too expensive to have to put up with all that other shaz...

I don't want them, I was just curious as to why everyone hated them. I have BFG AT's right now, and I love them. I also loved the TrXuS MT's I used to have, right up to the point where one literally exploded while I was going down the highway. Blew a gash halfway around the tire, and part of it was melting. Great off road, but almost too soft a compound for street use.

And yes, the reason the tire exploded was entirely my fault. It is nothing against the tire. If I wanted MT's again I wouldn't hesitate to get TrXuS MT's.

I like my BFG AT's too. Quiet on the road, way cheaper than MT/R's and perform well on slickrock in the backwoods trails I like to meander along on my way fishing...

As well as not cleaning out worth a damn in the mud, or anything similar.

I've seen cheapy walmart A/ts go farther and more places than a similiarly equipped rig with thornbirds. Not to mention they are uglier than sin and noisier than my 38.5 TSL SXs on the street

The word “thornbirds” is synonymous with “crappy chick flick.”

Need I say more…

My first and only run in with Thornbirds was on a friends Durango. They were like trying to run slicks in an extremely heavy downpour. No traction at all. That was my first impression. First impressions last a long time.

If you want A/T's, go with BFG A/T's... My experiences with them have been all positive. I've seen them keep up in some thick stuff where my TSL Super Swamper bias ply tires were struggling. Definitely a great tire.

put 4 on your car and then you can tell us all about em... i had some 35's for 6 days and that was 6 days too many... you cant hear yourself talk inside the car, the ride is crappy on the road aka bias ply and superslick off road...nuff said

Interco doesn't make even one tire that I would confidently put on a DD.
The quality control is lousy and you'd be hard pressed to find even one tire that is round or will balance out with less than 10oz. per tire.
They're most all loud and they all wear out way to quickly, that is, if you're lucky enough to have a set that doesn't either come apart on the highway, or chunks or cracks out all over itself.
The Thornbirds, in particular, are crappy because the tread gaps are way too small to get any kind of decent traction in mud (the side lugs are for that).
Speaking of side lugs, they are the first thing to chunk off and seperate at speed.
Anyway, the Iroc is the only tire I'd buy from that company, as it would hardly ever see pavement.

I run the TSL Super Swamper Bias Ply tires on my DD XJ... They are loud, but I like that. The only time it bothers me is when I am driving next to a median and it's got a loud echo.. but that's not a huge deal. Off-road they are great. On road, you just adjust your driving a little bit in the rain.. it's a JEEP... I don't expect it to ride like a Benz and corner like a BMW.
