View Full Version : Rockin' XJ Jamboree Nov 22-23

Dates for this annual event out in Johnson Valley will be Nov 22-23. As usual, trails will be from mild to wild. So, set the date aside and get those rigs ready. This run is always a blast, and the last few years we've had around 70 rigs, so it's a great time to meet and hang with friends and run some fun trails.
We have a new twist for the raffle this year, which I think you all will really like, so stay tuned. You won't want to miss it. :D

Sorry, Tony, it's that way every year. We considered doing it the weekend before, but that is a huge District 37 race in JV, so it didn't work. Weekend before Thanksgiving, and the same weekend as the 1000 is just the weekend that works.
Have fun down there,

Feb 27th, on a Friday. The last chance qualifier race is on Thurs, race is on Friday. It will have much better online coverage than last year, and spectators won't be discouraged from coming out to watch.

Aren't the top 10 from last year qualified? You do the stroker like we were talking about after last race?
As for the Raffle, since Mike won like 3/4's of the stuff last year, you just going to donate everything to him?

Yes, we're automatically in. There are 75 spots in the race, and around 130 applications. 75 teams/drivers were picked, and the rest of the applicants are invited to participate in a qualifying race on Thurs the day before the race. The number of open spots for last chance qualifiers will be determined by how many of the 75 invitess don't end up paying their entry fee by the Oct 1 deadline.
We'll have to see who gets lucky on the raffle this year, but the winners will be very lucky. :)

There are areas for all levels, just be prepared.
I run the HP30/8.25 combo, but with Alloy USA shafts front and rear, 760 Spicers, 4.56 gearing and selectable lockers. If you run the manual, lower t-case gears are lifesavers. Bring spares, but not the kitchen sink. Make sure everything is dialed in ahead of time.

You should be ok, make sure you have tow points front and rear. Especially if you're open open. The "easy" run will have some nice obstacles. Most the "hammer" trails need at least 1 locker, and preferably 2 lockers and 33's, and then you're dragging. :) Definately a fun time, you can drive around the backside and walk down some of the trails to watch guys beat on their junk.
Plus the raffles usually have some good stuff.

I know what mine weights. And unless you've hacked it down to the size that Ron is at then last I recall.... You have more tube, more gear and more axles than me. all for running 35"s. Last time I weighted my jeep without me in it. I was at 3200# round about. I still have the 30 and 44 combo on my 35"s. No rocker panels. hardly any body left, and minimal tubing. And I can still run it on the street.

Opie has an ugly cut up Jeep that's not street legal, is a shitty driver, and appears not to really care.
Bottom line here is that they are going to have a weigh-off followed by a wheel-off (where wheels just may fall off) in JV in November. Be there or be trapazoidal.

on warmer days, I pick my son up from school. He likes belting in to 4 points. I just gotta put my windshield back in. But my jeep drive quiet nice on the street. Cops now wave or nod to me instead of doing double takes. Most all the basic elements are there. signals, lights, mirrors, bumpers and belts. only tech ticket that they don't even bother writing is the fender flare/mud flap one. They know I don't intend on going through the mud.
I like simplicity in my jeep. You make it seem like weight is not an issue. Didn't Ron teach on anything Opie?:gee::dunno:
And this one isn't directed at you Opie but all those other guys that pack everything but the kitchen sink in the back of there jeeps.
here is a challenge. Run Claw hammer. loaded full of shit. then go back to camp, take everything out, including the spare and 3 passengers and run it again. Is claw to much. then try it on a smaller trail like LBJ or tack.

I definately agree that there are some things that help rigs perform... Light Weight, lockers, and lower than stock t-case gears are near the top of my list...
all I'm saying is that the driver/passenger walking away when the rig doesn't perform as expected is just higher on that list... :D

I didn't say I was stupid and skimped on tubing. I just spent some time working out the math. Think about it. Ron likes using 1.5" .120 wall... right Ron? but he has no body. You and I still have a body on our jeeps. I chose to run 1.75" .090 wall. yes its a thinner wall but it is structurally stronger. And its tied in to the body at key points. in a roll, the body is going to take the initial dent and ding but it is backed up by the cage. Now in the case of my boat sides. the new rocker panels are 1.75 .120 wall since they will come into direct contact with the rocks.

cuz I'm in the mood to fawk up a thread!
Yes, tool should be carried. for me, its a plug kit. 10# CO2 bottle with air chuck, enough tools to change a ujoint and a tierod. and maybe pinch a brake line, 1 qt of oil, couple bottles of gatorade, and some snacks. Thats it. Oh, and a spare set of shafts all around.
At the RG, I carried nothing. no spares or tools other than a plug kit and air that I left in the truck.
Should be fun playing out at Goatfest. I want to win some damn seats this year. My stick seats are getting torn up and the shoulder harness doesn't fit around the headrest perfectly.
But I am going to try and get out on thursday to wheel on friday. Hopefully I can get my rack done in time. No camper this year.

on warmer days, I pick my son up from school.

No fee, no registration. It's basically a club run and we'll serve dinner and have a raffle on Sat night. Dinner will be $10 a person.

BTW, we're not going to do event shirts for this year. Since the run will be a fundraiser for Team NAXJA, we hope folks will get our "Proud Supporter of Team NAXJA" shirts. I'm figuring out the details, but the plan is to provide dinner at no charge to all those who get the T-shirts.
Please visit TeamNaxja.com (http://www.teamnaxja.com/) to order shirts. Include in your comments that you'll be at the event to pick up your shirt.
Many thanks to all of you who support our crazy efforts to be successful in the King of the Hammers race.

I don't get why the sniveling? The BBQ dinner is still the same price as it was last year and you don't even have to eat the Jamboree food if you don't wish to suport the group, you can still bring your own.
Only this year you get a free dinner if you wish to buy a shirt, and you don't have to buy one.
Maybe I just read it wrong, but you sound like more of a Grinch then a Santa.

I guess I'm just a little hesitant on the "cause". Maybe I'm reading into it a little much or missed some vital info. In years past it was FOPV. And I think this year many were under the impression that it was to be FOJV. In years past, many were willing to kick down extra $$$ on the raffle just for the cause. Maybe a little more enlightenment on why you need money for your "fix". Maybe I'm just being an asshole, but I think thats what Santa might be saying as well.

Very legitimate question, which has not been addressed yet. Unfortunately, this could be a long post, but I'll do my best.
There are a number of elements to this, which I'll address in no particular order. Friends of Panamint Valley does not currently need more money, so the thought was to do it for Friends of Johnson Valley. A couple things happened there, one is that FOJV is already getting a decent amount of money from other sources, including NAXJA, without a set monetary goal or determination of how much they could use. So, no pressing need exists that we are aware of.
Another element is that one reason we're running as Team NAXJA is the potential to do some fund raising in the club. One reason the club is willing to sponsor a team is for the promotional benefit to the club, and to our forums, from the exposure and media attention from having an entry in the King of the Hammers. From a website/forums perspective, the only other outfit sponsoring a team is Pirate4x4, which puts NAXJA in some pretty good company. This exposure has to add some credibility and prestige to our club and forums, providing more awareness and hopefully some additional incentive for folks to become members or continue to be members. We have a couple of XJ buggies, and NAXJA members, competing in this prestigious race, and we think this is a good thing for all of us if nothing more than pride.
One more element of us doing the Rockin' XJ Jamboree as a fund raiser for Team NAXJA is why we do it in the first place, and the current economic conditions. This event came out of an annual run we've done each year for a long time. I wanted to provide an opportunity for more folks to enjoy JV, and for folks that have never been there before a chance to check it out. Also, it's always good to get friends together and do some fun wheeling and hanging out. Unfortunately, these events don't happen by themselves, it takes someone willing to take on the project and friends to help make it happen. There is time and effort involved in putting on an event like this. Those of us who are JV regulars don't need to put on an event like this to go out there and wheel and have a good time, but we're willing to put forth the time and effort to do so once a year to provide an opportunity for others, and to raise some funds for a worthy cause.
This year, partly because no other pressing need exists, we decided to put forth the effort in order to raise some funds for Team NAXJA. Partly because of the economic climate, and partly because we just had the 25th Anniversary event, there is little availability of merchandise for a raffle. So, in an effort to provide a worthwhile raffle, and to enhance the fun of the event, we decided to put our own rock buggies up for the raffle prizes. This is a rather expensive year for us and KOH. Last year we borrowed equipment, and this year we need to purchase it. Next year it will be much cheaper since we'll already have what we need, so this is the expensive year. Plus, we don't just want to run, we want to be competitive. None of us have the extra resources to do this, so we are dependant on finding the funds. Even if we can raise the funds we need, we're still out of pocket a bunch. We see this, and hopefully enough of you will too, as a win win for everybody. We get to go race, the club gets some great exposure and recognition, folks have something fun to get behind and follow, and a bunch of us get to go out to JV and have a fun weekend of wheeling and visiting at the Rockin' XJ Jamboree.
Many of you have been very supportive to this whole King of the Hammers effort, and we are deeply appreciative of the help that we have recieved. We are not trying to take anything away from any other cause. We just hope that folks can respect our efforts to put on an event for others to enjoy, don't mind supporting our teams race effort, and will come out and have the usual great time. No one has to support this, come out and go wheeling anyway. If you want to eat Sat night, it will be $10. If you want a chance to drive a rock buggy on a trail run, or win some merchandise (not nearly as much as previously), then buy some raffle tickets. If you want to get a shirt and a dinner, it's $40. The bottom line is to come out and have a good time.
Hopefully, I haven't been too long winded here. And hopefully I've fully explained what we're doing.

I know some have called me asking why The Rockin' XJ Jambo is not a fundraiser for FOJV. The simple rely is that the 'event' has always been Goatman's show and he can decide who benefits from it.
The more detailed reply;
The fight for saving Johnson Valley needs to won on many fronts.
Each as important as the other.
The creation of FOJV, information gathering and dissemination, fundraising, and the like have all benefited from big exposure events like KOH. The KOH video has generated big bucks for us.
But we can't lose site of why JV is so important to us. Wheelin'. That is what this is all about. Using the land that is ours to use.
You should all know that NAXJA is a leader in the fight.
But why fight the fight and not show people what wheelin' is about?
I say that Team NAXJA is as important as any meeting I go to. We have the big picture in mind and Team NAXJA will help us to achieve the exposure we will need in the future. NAXJA has already donated over three thousand dollars to FOJV, although we could use more, I agree with those that think that Team NAXJA can only benefit us with needed national exposure.
