Maybe I'm old fashioned, but the playground is where kids learn valuable social skills. Standing up for yourself, dealing with crowds, dealing with other people, competition and the most important skill: picking up chicks. I sincerely hope my kids(someday) don't have to suffer through playing on monkey bars that you can touch the ground on. This has got to be a joke:

My first broken arm happened while playing on the Monkey bars, 8 years old. I still remember my parents just telling to be carefull, because stuff like this happens.
But then i guess these days, if the kids aren't wrapped in bubble the parents sue the school for getting a scratch.
Ahhh, to think back to "Just SUCK it up", and "it'll feel better when it quits hurting"

I was teaching my 6yo to cross the monkey bars when he fell on his face.
After he was done worrying about all the people that just saw him eat mulch, I made him get back up there until he made it across.
Afterwards, he realized how silly it was to be afraid of not being able to touch the ground.
I told him, that's the whole point and, "Don't fall in the lava anymore."

Hmm. Maybe they are onto something here. If we don't play, then we stay safe. If we don't play, then we are unable to ever have any experiences. What these tools don't understand is that their own successes in life are due to risks they have taken. Risks they learned to take on the playground. If you ain't careful, you get hurt. Isn't that lesson of paramount importance to children?
On the other hand, my son has broken both arms. One on the monkey bars and the other inline skating...

These are probably the ones complaining about kids not getting enough exercise. Sounds like they want it to be as safe outside as it is inside hiding. Screw that. Im not a careful person, never broken a bone, but definately been hurt many many times. No other way to learn to be careful.

I have broken many bones. My 4yo ride his bike without training wheels. Learned when He was 3. Has broken 3 helmets. In fact tonight we were at at picnic at a local college and he wwas showing off for the "big kids". Ran right into a 40' steel storage container. He got high fives from the lacross team and hugs froma couple girls. Next time he may do it on purpose.

i just wanna say a big FAWK THAT!!! my old elementary school started to go to the safer equipment right before i graduated. now none of the cool crap they had is left. its all boring ass pieces of plastic. ive broken a few bones. none of them were related to play structures, but one was related to polevaulting, which all of the XXXXXXs in this world are trying to get rid of. oh yah did i quit after a little broken bone and a few screws in my ankle. . . HELL NO. i went on to break my hs record by 10" and place 14th at state my senior year. i was just a little more cautious from then on
i say kids need to go out there. exerience pain, have fun. what are these kids gonna be like when they grow up. . . even bigger XXXXXXs than their parents? i really dont see how that is possible tho.

Another reason they are doing this....Really stupid lawsuits....
I have seen parents be at a playground and while the kid or kids played ..parents were constantly talking on a cell phone...not paying ANY attention to WTF the kid is doing....Then when "Little Johnny"falls or does something that causes serious injury....The parents rant that "the equipment isn't safe" then next step they sue the city ,make alotta money, and will turn around go to another playground and do the same thing..The cities and places like McDonalds that have these playgrounds have insurance for this...and I'm sure it ain't cheep...but these places have to cover there butts.
Kinda like auto insurance...which ain't usually cheep...you have people that abuse the insurance company....therefore EVERYBODYS premiums go up
It's a no win situation

In elementary school we got a new playground. Fond memories. To make it safer, they covered the ground in recycled black rubber. Which actually turned out to be recycled tires. Complete with the wire sticking out. They switched to crushed rock, that turned out to be safer. I got knocked off a 5' slide and faceplanted in the rocks. It hurt, but a face full of that wire would have been worse.
