i put a high flow magnaflow cat, o2 sensor in cat and a glasspack on a couple months ago and now my exhaust tip has alot of soot built up. before it never had any before, even when i put a flowmaster knockoff it never had soot in the tip. my tip is chrome so it is really shows. so is this normal or is there something wrong. i know some is normal exp. with 139,xxx mile on the clock, but this is a fair amount of soot build up since i put on the high flow, o2, and glasspack. thanks:cool:

Soot is basicly unburned fuel. I would gess the high flow cat dosn't get as hot as the OEM, and therfor doesn't burn off the bit of unburned fuel in the exaust.

I second this opinion. An exhaust analyer would confirm it. But if it's not producing black smoke or other negative side effects then I wouldn't worry about it.

What do you consider a lot of build up? Just a black ring or 1/16" or 1/8"?

A noticable ring, from my experience, is relatively normal for most XJs as well as other vehicles. However, if you truely have a buildup that is 1/16" or more in a short period of time, that does indicate a problem.

I bought my XJ new in 2000 and it has always had a ring. One of the first things I noticed.

when it was stock the inside of the tip was clean, no black soot at all, i put a flowmaster type muffler on it and it stayed the same, but now with the new cat, o2, and glasspack it bulid up rather quickly, i dont know how much because my exhuast drips alot of condensation and washes alot of it out. do any of your xjs drip alot i notice alot of the newer cars do.
