I am trying to get my buds new xj home but I can't get a hold of a truck. My dad told me that I could tow with his 94 explorer which I am currently using while repairing my xj. It is the V6 auto with a class 3 hitch. Now he has pulled a large ocean boat (kinda like a cabin cruser) with it but I don't know how much that weighs compared to an xj. I have towed using his truck which i know is overkill but I don't have access to it for a while (work truck). Anyone with an exploder know what it can tow? Tried google wihtout much luck (still looking) was hoping some one here has knowledge.

My old 21' mini day cruiser had a v drive and a big block. With the trailer it had a combo weight of about 3700 lbs. Chances are a cabin cruiser of that same length, will weight more.

But then again, I wouldn't tow a set of jet skies with an exploder..:D....

Well I went to the Reese web-site and found this (http://www.reeseprod.com/fitguides/hitchsel_moreinfo.asp?vid=329&year=1994&partno=37051) does not mean that it will tow it though. As for towing capacities, 60% of the mass of the tow vehicle is as far as I go since you need to be able to stop, mass tow weights are guidlines and not really practicle numbers. Plus its a Ford Exploder, need I say more.

While it made me ill to imagine, my dad did tow a flatbed trailer with a 54' chevy on it from NJ to Richmond VA using a 96 v6 Exploder. Here's the big cringe factor, with a bumper hitch!! He did make it (had trailer breaks hooked up) with out any incedent. So is it possible, yes, would i reccomend it, yeah, if you get a thrill from pucker factor.

I towed my 1962 Ford F100 4x4 900 miles with my 2001 Explorer, and towed an older full size Lincoln land yatch from Denver to Los Angeles with a 96 explorer.

Turn the overdrive off, keep it at 55 and be smart - you shouldnt have a problem.

Turn the overdrive off, keep it at 55 and be smart - you shouldn't have a problem. And keep WELL back from any traffic. Your stopping distance is going to at least double.
