This is for my wife's Subaru Legacy Outback, 1999.

I thought the center bearing int he driveline was getting bad, as there has been a vibration in the car since we bought it 15,000 miles ago, that showed up at about 30mph and again at 60-65mph. The other day, I was sitting in traffic, adn it was hot, so I slipped it into neutral and revved it up to 1500 rpm, and the vibration showed up! So I popped it into park, and revved it up again, and got the same result.

Now, I am just trying to figure out what would be spinning and not spinning with teh trans in neutral and in park. If it is the engine, what could be causing a bad engine vibration. The car only has 40,000 miles on it.

what about a flywheel? that is really the only thing that would be spinning when in neutral

It would be spinning the torque converter and input shaft as well.

I'd check the tranny to engine bolts too. If they're loose, there could be a slight misalignment of the converter and input shaft.

Also, maybe a pully up front. If it has a dampener type pulley, they have some weight to them, maybe it got out of balance some how.
