FSM shows factory remover, seems to me slide puller w/internal claws would do the trick.
Also, bearing differs in that it's not conical shaped and doesn't come with a cone like a pinion bearing does. (Timken pn 6408)
Am I on the right track?

When we put the auburn in the shop popped em out with a pliers, he just stuck the pliers in, opened them up and gave a yank and out it came, so much for fancy tools. It did get new bearings though, that was part of the job.

Yes, that will do the trick.

Should not be tapered, should be flat across like the one you remove.
