distributer shaft play

I took the cap and rotor off today and noticed that my distributer shaft has quite a bit of play in it side to side... is that normal?

Nope. Sounds like the shaft bushings are worn.

this may sound stupid but does the gears for the oil pump have anything to do with the distributer? My oil pump is out right now so I was just wondering.

I don't think so, the distributor is driven off the camshaft.

Even if it was driven off the oil pump, I'd expect no play in the shaft.
