Anyone have any experience or know anyone that has had a hernia?
I've been having pain "down there" for about 2 weeks and decided to go to the Doc today. He said he thinks he fealt a hernia. He said if it is one, it's not a big one but it's there. So I gotta get an ultrasound done on Thursday and a CT scan on Friday to see exactly what I'm dealing with.
I'm supposed to start the Mass Fire Academy on October 3rd and I'm really hoping this isn't going to interefere, because if it does, I'll have to wait another year to attend the Academy.
So anyone have any good stories where surgery wasn't needed or healing time was within a few weeks? 'Cause that's kind of what I'm hoping for.

No direct experience but I did have a friend who had to get surgery. He was only down a couple weeks.

That's gonna be tough. I'm a tow truck operator, EMT, and Firefighter. Well hopefully they'll find that it's small enough and nothing's getting strangled so I can hold off on any surgery if that's what I need. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

I had a hernia surgery a few years back. Its not the worst thing in the world and you can live with one for years, but obviously you run the risk of strangulation of the intestine. And it can become uncomfortable when you are lifting or straining. I had it like to the bottom right of my belly button, like in the V above your nuts. I couldnt walk upright for a few days because of the stiches and any kind of coughing and lauging was pretty painful, so your gonna be down for at least a week. And you have to go fully under for it too and that fu*ks you all up too, good luck

I've had 3 of them, surgery for all 3:D, The first one, the Doc told me the pain would tell me when I could go back to work(framing contractor at the time), went to work 8 days after, well, you can guess why I needed the second sugery(hey, I have a high threshold for pain)(after all, went to Moab for 3 days, a day after my vasectomy:D ) Anyway, with the second and third, they used a Gore-Tex patch to secure "things", I would will say it's more uncomfortable than painfull EXCEPT when you laugh or sneeze, then it BLOODY WELL HURTS.
As far as time goes, I was informed that if you worked for Gov, they give you 3 months to recoupe, for the rest of us, a couple weeks, you should be good for light/medium duty, then go from there..

I had inguinal hernias repaired on both sides at the same time. It was done on an out patient basis. In at 9, back home at 3. Took a vicodan only once the next day. My surgeon said "take it easy for a few days and then you can resume normal activities". One side was 20 years old that I wore a truss for; the other side was fairly recent that I barely noticed. The procedure used was called "a modified Canadian procedure". A week after having it done, I was able to shovel my driveway and I picked up a 42 lb computer with no trouble. That was 8 years ago and am not having any problems.

Interesting. So I guess healing time is sort off all over the place.
I'm like you Geepfreak, with the tolerance to pain. That's why i waited two weeks to see the Doc. when I told him how long it had been he just stared at me and said, "I've noticed that tend to wait a very long time before you come to see me."
Well, I never thought I'd say this, but I hope I have the other thing there testing for which would be an infection in my ball sack that cures in a week with antibiotics.
I guess only time will tell and I'll find out Friday exactly what I'm gonna have to do.

I waited 3 months to see the Doc after I first experienced some discomfort,

I had one when I was 6 months and another when I was 6 or so. All I remember was they let me ride in a taxi cart thing when they took me into the operating room. And the gas they gave me to knock me out smelled like watermelon. Mmmmm. :looser:
For mine, I had to have it redone because they messed up the first one. I remember it started to hurt so bad that I could barely walk. I figured I should tell my parents then. So do it earlier rather then later, because you might mess something up more then if you had done it sooner. But Im not a doctor. :sad1:

And how, pray tell, does one get an infected ball sack? Unusual piercings?

Man I feel bad. I had a inguinal hernia, that I "let go" for 5 years. (no insurance) When I finally went in to the specialist and he had me on the table in a day. Mine was the size if a BASEBALL. It was one of the largest that he had ever seen. What is normally a 45 min surgery took them 3 hours. Went home the sameday. Next morning I woke up when the pain meds had worn off. I got up to the worst pain ever, much worse then a shattered wrist. I was down for three weeks.
So the moral of the story get it fixed soon or your scrotum will hang to your knees.

Everybody sing!
Do your balls hang low
Do they wobble to and fro
Can you tie them in a knot
Can you tie them in a bow?
Can you throw them o'er your shoulder
Like a continental soldier
Do your balls hang low?

Guys, laughing feels a little uncomfortable.
Imagine what that would feel like if you actually tied your balls in a bow. It kinda hurts just thinking about it.

There is a, now nationally sindicated, live performance show where two naked guys play with their privates like they were tying balloon animals. It's very popular, I kid you not.
and, no, I am not going to provide the link to their web site

We had free preview of HBO a couple of months ago. Seven days to get my fix of Real Sex. We had HBO when we had cable. Opted out on the satelite. That wasn't my favorite episode of Real Sex, by the way. I didn't really watch it...honest. It was just there. What was I gonna do? turn off the TV?
