If you don't think our military pilots earn their pay ... you need to take a look at this picture ... and then look again and realize what you're seeing ...

http://home.comcast.net/~scw99/Chopper.jpg

This photo was taken by a soldier in Afghanistan of a helo rescue mission. The pilot is a PA Guard guy who flies EMS choppers in civilian life. Now how many people on the planet you reckon could set the ass end of a chopper down on the roof top of a shack on a steep mountain cliff and hold it there while soldiers load wounded men in the rear??? Gives me the chills and a serious case of the vertigo ... I can't even imagine having the nerve ... much less the talent and ability ...

The picture was taken during Operation Mountain Resolve in 2003 in Afghanistan. They were loading Afghans taken by the Army's 10th Mountain Division.

Be interesting to have been a fly on the wall of the debriefing for sure. Be a toss up over a butt reaming or an attaboy...probably an attaboy cause it worked.

wow, wow and ummm wow. very nice work. might be an intresting note , but they hold a competion or used to for helo pilots. every year an army guy takes it. I will have to dig to find out when , where it goes on and who puts it on. but was hearing about through guys that worked with my father.

Just got my private pilot license for rotocraft- helicopter about two weeks ago. I haven't had the chance to fly something that big but i hope too. Once i get my commercial license i'm hoping to step it up a lil.
I don't know about the dual rotors, but i do know it takes alot of skill and patience to keep a helicopter in a hover with just one skid on the ground.

Well, the pilot might be doing a heck of a job holding position, but I can pretty much garuntee that he had a spotter help him set it down like that. Good or not, you can not see under/behind the bird from the hac2c seat. So, we need to say "atta-boy" to everyone involved, not just the pilot. Been there, spotted that.

Hmmm you know to be honest I never thought of that, completely slipped my mind about how he could ever see back there. Well  to all involved.
