I think he is talking about a keyless entry remote.

"Key Fob" pretty much refers to anything attached to a keychain that has actualy functionality and isn't a key.

96 and the key fob is for keyless entry... the auto part store i went to said i needed the fcc number off the back of my old one, but the person i got my jeep from lost it.. so i dont know what to do..

Yeah, the IR remotes suck. Best bet is to buy an aftermarket alarm and let it control the door locks.
