what is this for, just for the gear box to sit straight.

Well story behind the question. A while back i broke one of my gear box bolts installin my bumper!!! And didnt feel like drillin and tappin it back out!!(yeah i know dumba$$) but anywho the other day at McyD's i couldnt turn right so i got out and my other two bolts were broke now:looser:

well i work in a machine shop so i have no problem drillin out and retapping the holes(hopefully can just heat em up and easy out them)

But this aluminum jobby broke halfway around one of the holes.
Is it that big of a deal or do i need a new one, or can i just reuse it after i drill and tap the gear box casting?

and if i need a new where could i get it?

The spacer is absolutely needed to allow the steering box to bolt up correctly. When they break you can buy a new one, find one in a JY, make one or the best way- install a steering box inner bracket or complete set like C-ROKs.

Oh - steering "gear box!" When I think "gearbox," I'm picturing a stir-yer-own transmission...

Yeah - gotta have that goofy little spacer between the steering gear and the framerail, or something just as thick. Else, you'll never get it to align properly.

my local junkyard has 3 cherokees but they didnt know what i was talkin about so they said i could come out and take a look. Should any year work or?

Or just grab a 1/2" thick metal plate and drill holes in it - problem solved, and you've got better reinforcement for that side anyhow.

Nah not that easy. the reason for the pipes are to "space" the box from the frame. The back side of the box is NOT flat. Remember its still a tube for the worm inside. Come one Jon you gettin tired LOLZ!!

That spacer is the worst design I've ever seen. It's made of a Magnesium alloy and it causes the bolts to corrode. So when you try to remove the bolts, they break. Replace it with something made of steel and be sure that all three bolts have a good solid connection when you are done. Two bolts will cause it to work loose and break the bolts.
