i bid on a 78 4wd f-150 for kicks (112$) without an engine, figuring someone would outbid me....... nope 4 days later my 112 dollars held strong and im now the proud owner of a 78 f-150. So i know what the hp44 and 9 inch are going into (the xj duhhhh...) but my question is does anyone know what trans and transfer case came in these things? im thinking of pulling the all the running gear out and sending the body and frame to the scrapyard and maybe teaching myself to rebuild an auto trans and then keep the set for a later project or for when i need money down the road.... but all in all im in a weird way happy about my "accidental" purchase

I had a 78 F150, and it was a formidable little truck. A much better plow vehicle than my miserable Chevy. Mine was a short box 4WD with the 6-300 and 4 speed manual, so I don't know what sort of tranny yours might have. I have the FSM for the 79 at home, and I think I have a Chilton or something too, but I'm not at home. If you can wait a few days, PM me sometime around Wednesday, and I'll see what I can dig up.
The transfer case on mine was a New Process of some sort but I can't tell you the number.

I am pretty sure the t-case is a NP205.

205 case, if its original. A c6 tranny if its an automatic. My question would be ; why desicrate a great truck like that? Put an engine in it, most likely it was a 351m or a 400, and double quadruple your money. Then buy a set of axles already built with the proceeds. Maybe even trade or sell it for enough to get the holy grail of all axles, a drivers drop dana 60 front and centered rear

you don't understand its nasty.... really nasty.... the axles trans and transfer case are the only high points the bady is rough, i might keep the frame to chop down and build a hybrid buggy using the trans an transfer case someday........
