use a screwdriver and pry it off (gently) from the top. It will come off once you get one edge broke free.

If you haven't already found out the hard way, be sure you have a drip pan under it :)

is also less messy if you keep a top bolt or two in, but loose.

then the cover doesn't splash down into the pan if you drop it

could stick a screwdriver into the fill hole, and pry it off like that.
