fuel tank skid?

My Jeep has no gas tank skid at all. I was going to buy one, but the best price I'm finding is about $200. I am now thinking of building one and found ths build plan. Anyone else build one? any tips or tricks?

did that but someone welded my rear hitch on any advice?
sorry to hijack
but this has me
don't want to cut the unibody and they did a good job on the welding

You may not have a choice but build one since they welded the hitch on.....

How many XJs actually came with skid plates? The odds of finding one at a junkyard seems pretty low.

Never could find one so I used the hitch as the foundation for a gas tank skid.

I know I have never seen a stock gas tank skid plate, on the 89 I just gutted they had a metal tank with a rubber skid mounted to the bottom, but that would be as close as I have seen.
