A few weekends ago and decided to build a new rear axle housing. I was getting tired of repairing the factory housing and I didn't want to spend a bunch of money for an after market housing. I ran it for four days with no breakage and no leaks.

I offset the axle tubes for more ground clearance. I roughly gained over 3/4" on the axle tubes and over 1 1/4" on the bottom of the third housing. There is .120" cleance between the axle tube and the axle shaft. Axle tubes are 3"x.180" DOM.

I dont see it being a big issue 3/4 of an inch isn't all that much, it's not like the wrap portals cause.

none the less - pretty cool...
as far as suspension stresses, it's the same thing as a portal but to a much lesser degree. his links should handle it just fine and even with leafs it would be the same as a 3/4" lift block.

as for the axle holding up and not bending... it's far more about design than material thickness. he had to use the thin wall tube to get the full benefit of the design, but I would like to see a bit more trussing.

Seems like a minimal gain for just 3/4" at the axle tubes. Kinda neat tech article, but not really THAT amazing. The trussing he did on the custom housing was very nice though.

yeah, I realized later that his clearance claims at the diff didn't make sense and questioned him on it. his numbers for the diff are just the gains from shaving, which I've already done also.

not as cool as it seemed at first, but still a nice jig idea and cool to see someone build there own housing

"Home built axlehousing" is a little bit deceiving, considering its a Yota axle. Not a whole lot more to building the housing than there would be to building a giant wrap-around diff cover. All the actual tech is in the drop out 3rd. No worries about gear mesh, runout, backlash, bearing caps and journals being perfectly aligned, balanced, and machined, etc. This is why we've seen this done with Yota axles, 9" axles, and Rockwells a few times now.

Now what I'd REALLY like to see would be someone fab their own 44, 60, 70, or even 80 housing. Talk about a challenge when youre working in thousandth of an inch tolerances.

Not to take away credit from the fabricator though, thats still definitely very cool to think out of the box, and go totally custom. Looks like he did a good job too.

instead of running offset tubes, could using a smaller tube outer diamiter have the same effect and not loose too much strength? We're shooting to have a sub 500lb rig (not including driver)...
