Well, this is more a rant than anything. My buddy and I last min, decided to wheelin in Azusa Canyon, hell it is only 15 min from home why not!

Well we get there and my rig has several offroad lights across the front and top. Well, as I pull up to pay my $8 fee to go play, there is a LA County Sheriff there. He ask's me if my lights are connected, I reply that yes they are, is there a problem, he replies no no problem, but pull up behind this other rig and get a ticket! He then informs me that it is illegal to drive on streets with off road lights on your rig unless they are covered. This really pissed me off. I have seen many rigs with off road lights that are not covered. Oh well my bad!

I also watched another rig (nice jeep tj ruby) get unloaded off of a trailer. As soon as it hit the driveway, the sherrif asked him to get in line behind me. They wrote him a ticket for no mudflaps. He then replies that he trailerd his rig in. The cop told him that since he unloaded in the parking lot, that it is considered a "city street" that he was in violation. This is a racket to collect money.

I just wanted to forwarn anyone that is going to try and wheel anywhere that the checkpoints are out and the are getting you on stupid shit, pardon my french.

I am just pissed!!!!!!

actually since it was in the parking lot of a paid OHV area it is not considered a public street the paid part of that assures that. (Private land owned by a entity even if it is the goverment is still private land) I had a ticket about 4 months ago for having offroad lights on my heep that wernt covered (some cheap 100watt autozone specials) and the judge threw it out because I was on a non county maintained dirt road when the cop pulled me over. non county maintained roads also qualify as private property since if the county doesnt maintain them the county has not taken posesion of them and there for belong to the owners of the property it is adjacent to and thus private property.

Did he give you a ticket or a fix it or ticket, if it is the latter then you can just remove them or cover them and get it sighned off. I try and hit up a off duty at the local sub station.

you should also report the problem officer(s) to thier captain if you feel so inclined

The problem with uncovered light tickets is that they are moving violations. And as such count as a point to your driving record and your insurance company....(ask me how I know :moon: )
Most of the time they write a fix it ticket for that kind of stuff, including the mud flaps.
You are wrong about the parking lot being private property. Most of them are, not all of them. Although the judge will most likely throw the mud flap violation out if he is informned about the trailering of the rig. Some off road areas have thier parking on public land not belonging to the park. Oregon does this. It allows for cities and counties to collect parking fees that otherwise would not be collectable from ORV usage.
Lets face it, you damn well knew that your lights were suposed to be covered and you didn't cover them, and many of us risk the mud flap citation (I'm sure you have seen those big trucks with the funky flaps mounted with some sort of quick dissconnect system.) Big hairy deal!
Dot your 'i's" and cross your "t's" if you don't want a cop to look at your rig twice. (although around here I think they are all just jealous that my Jeep is better than thier Expeditions!)

Just out of curiosity, what is the mudflap rule? I plan on eventually having 33/12.5's on my jeep with the stock flares. I've noticed otheres running this with the tire a little past the flair (approx. 1.5"). Is this a ticket getter?
Where can one look to get that info?
Thanks in advance.

All I could find were:

27600. No person shall operate any motor vehicle having three or
more wheels, any trailer, or semitrailer unless equipped with
fenders, covers, or devices, including flaps or splash aprons, or
unless the body of the vehicle or attachments thereto afford adequate
protection to effectively minimize the spray or splash of water or
mud to the rear of the vehicle and all such equipment or such body or
attachments thereto shall be at least as wide as the tire tread.
This section does not apply to those vehicles exempt from
registration, trailers and semitrailers having an unladen weight of
under 1,500 pounds, or any vehicles manufactured and first registered
prior to January 1, 1971, having an unladen weight of under 1,500
pounds.

But I can't find any particulars on size or determining when: attachments thereto afford adequate protection to effectively minimize the spray or splash

That is the equivalent of a trooper sitting in front of a biker bar and ticketing every bike as it leaves for "exhaust modified to be louder than stock" .

total bs just to make money

Yes...it is also called "entrapment" and is illegal.

-reminder to self

This post reason 1224555344322 that I am glad I do not live in California.

All we have to deal with is stupid mudflap, fender flare tickets and bad beer. :D

When I put my lights up I asked an officer in Coronado CA who was cruising down the alley what the law was on lights. He told me that I could either cover them or pull the fuse so they were inoperable. Since I had an easily accessable inline fuse I kept it pulled until I got off road at night. I was pulled over once, showed the officer (another Coronado officer) that the lights were inoperable and he let me go.

I have never seen the text of the law on this but it would be worth looking into if you dont have covers. Its probably the reason the officer asked if the lights were operable. I like it because there is no way I will melt the covers if I accidentally flip them on in the day and dont notice the indicator light (guess how I know).

Now I have to figure out the laws in Virginia....

X2, "Holiday weekend? If so, they are just digging for probable cause." I got hassled here in Long Beach. (Didn't come to a complete stop before right turn? probably. Cut somebody off on a lane change w/o directionals? Nope!) Let off with a warning and advice to get windshield fixed. $116 later.....done. Seriously dot I's and cross tee's on holiday weekend and thank God you don't get killed by a drunk/sleeping driver. (Lost two friends on two separate weekends that way.) :gonnablow

Bummer man...

Removing the fuse is a good idea, nosigma.

Anyone have a tried and true method of disconnects for the mud flaps?

Rocky Road outfitters makes a set of removable ones. I copied thier idea with my own.

Has anyone in a Cherokee ever gotten a ticket for 'no mud flaps?'
I know I'm pushing in on my XJ. After last TDS event I broke out the sawzall and just molested my front fenders, not much fender left, and that leaves lots of tire exposed.
But I live in Borrego Springs....and the local cops are kinda' liberal with what they call 'street legal.' And it doesn't hurt that I go wheelin with one of the local Sheriffs and on of the HP's. :D

I just got one on Friday! CHP got me on the 126 at about 6:30 PM. The officer told me the flares need to cover the top 1/2 of the tires, from the axle centerline. With 6" of lift I will definately need mudflaps to pass inspection and get the "fix-it" ticket signed off.

Yeah, the A-hole Sheriffs popped me with a mud flap ticket, today, (in my Toyota p/u) as soon as I paid and went through the gate! My tires are barely an inch past the fenders (35X12.50s) So, since I was gonna get the ticket anyway, I figured, I might as well get my shots in and told him and his partner how "chicken shit" they were and what I thought of them. What a bunch of jerks! Here you go do the legal thing and pay to play in a designated OHV area and they still have to screw with you. And they wonder why nobody likes LA County Sheriffs-------Hans

I was thinking of this post while driving to Newport a week ago when i snapped this pic...

What is the law here?
http://www.geocities.com/an_imortl/p1005135.jpg

There is a local spot down the street where a bunch of these types of cars meet every Saturday night... would a cop be able to pull in and give them all tickets? what is the district that this ticket is for? I would like to send them this pic and ask questions about the tickets they are writing in Azusa...

I just went to the LASD web site and submitted this question...

I would like to know why Off roaders in Azusa Canyon are being targeted for minor vehicle violations after paying fees to enter an OHV area... Why are off roaders being targeted... Why are these vehicles allowed on the road with out wheel flares or mud flaps? Do they all get stopped for vehicle code violations? cut and paste link into browser...

thanks for your help...

I think the laws for vehicles weighing less than 1200lbs are different.
The local Manx guys run cut fenders....
