View Full Version : How do you earn extra money?

Earlier this year, the wife and I (mostly me) made a commitment to be more responsible with our finances. Since then, I’ve tried to fund my hobbies with methods other than my paycheck. For the most part, I’ve been buying broken Xbox’s on ebay, fixing them and selling them again.

Now that its summer, they aren’t selling as well so I’ve started selling Jeep parts that I’ve had laying around not being used. I’m also keeping an eye out for a jeep or ford pickup I could get for cheap and part out locally and on ebay.

All this has me wondering, what other ways are out there to earn a couple hundred dollars a month for hobbies? I used to do plasma back when I was single, but that led to a bad experience when I almost passed out in the middle of the road after one particular donation.

So how about it? What brilliant ideas have you all come up with?

A good deal of my project money comes from recycling (brass, bronze, aluminum, copper, stainless, circuit boards, ...) from stuff I find and tear down, waste from projects I'm already working on, and the like. I see a "free" TV kerbside, I'll pick it up. Either I can fix it and sell it, or break it down and recycle it.

Wheels? Same deal. Anything that isn't mostly steel (since the recyclers out here won't even talk to you for less than 500#!) I'll pick up and recycle.

I'll also take in CRV (of course,) so it does mount up.

If you decide to go this route, make sure you talk to your scrapyard and find out how they want it all sorted. For instance - electrical copper and plumbing copper pay out at different rates - mix them up, and it's a bit below the lower rate. Aluminum? Stampings/sheet/foil, wrought, and cast are all different alloy families - so sort them out. CRES/bronze/brass isn't that big of a problem.

Steel just goes into the kerbside bin, and I let the City pick that stuff up. Everything else - if it will fetch a price, I have a bin for it out in the garage.

Reminds me - I've still got to crush a huge batch of cartridge cases to take in one of these days...

Anything I'm about to throw away gets checked for value on ebay. I make about 100 bucks a week selling off stuff that I am done with. I'll probably eventually run out of junk that I don't need anymore.

I've thought about taking on a part time job, all 3 parts stores in town have offered me a job at some point, and I only work four days a week as it is... It would be real hard to trade one of my days off for the small amount of money they would pay me though.

I struggle with this too. I have all the overtime I want at work, but I get paid for it at the end of the year in the form of a bonus. The bonus is dependant on the performance of the company as a whole, so the amount is always in question. If I took a side job I'd have money now, but working OT has the potential for a lot more money.

And I have a salt mine in the backyard. Keeps the kids from wasting time in school or on the internet and when we hit salt we could actually make money.

Uncle sugar pays me pretty well, but for a few extra bucks when I go on leave I work a side job with my Dad's company. 3 or 4 days of working and I have some extra moolah for upgrades.

I work on my friends' jeeps. I don't make a fortune at it and I don't do really hard things, but if they need thing such as brakes, oil change, fluids changed, hub bearings, axle shafts, shocks, tires rotated, (you get the idea). I do it for them. I have my own garage and a fair supply of tools and have done the work to my own jeeps, (XJ & ZJ) so I'm comfortable doing it. Heck, brakes I'll do on just about any car.....At $35 an hour + parts, I don't get any complaints. I keep asking one friend of mine why doesn't the dealer do the "L" in "LOF" when he brings it to them for an oil change?

Great, when can I bring it over for an AC recharge and find out why the steering is starting to shimmy again?

Actually I don't have a problem with anyone charging for helping as long as both sides know the rates before hand. $35/hour seems like a pretty good deal for both sides if you need a mechanic.

find a good friend of yours that you would gladly help for free and then find out his brother has this thing for his 77 classic bronco that needs some work, but oh no he has more money then time... I do some things for him here and there to try and get some extra cash. I just wish I had time to do all the stuff on his list right now so I could get the"Lump Sum" effect. I really do need to find a way to make more money beacause right now I am a one man show on my prerunner and with my 74 bronco and 77 yamaha street bike and my 97xj projects I am taxed right now... Well I guess I will figure something out.

Let me clarify a little bit. My GOOD friends & I will do whatever for each other for nothing. It's more work acquaintances, (friends, but nevertheless people I don't usually just hang out with) that get charged. Case in point: Guy at work says he needs a new hub, Jeep is at the dealer getting some other work done, it'll cost $400. I tell him get part from RockAuto ($70), pay me 2 hours labor, save yourself $260. I make a few bucks, he saves a few bucks, everyone wins.

Yeah - it's called "mate's rates."

My wife hires me out to her friends. They can't do the work themselves, but they're usually willing to pay me $20-30/hour to do it for them. I just say, "Get a list together, get it to me a few days before, and I'll tell you what you need to get. Then, I'll come around and make a day of it."

It's not terribly frequent, but it has been known to net me $100-200 for a half-day's work, and it does come in handy. Light carpentry, light electrical, painting, hanging doors, household maintenance, computer instruction - since there's a lot I can do, it helps.

Family doesn't get charged. 1) They're family. 2) There's usually some quid pro quo going on (family pays for materials, but labour is free. Still saves BUCK$.)

I guess it depends on how good the friend is. I have given a lot of help away, and a lot of parts. Mostly I do it because I know the friends I help will one day return the favor.

I started my Amsoil business a couple years ago and it helps a lot by keeping all 4 of my vehicles full of the best synthetic lubes, filters, NGK plugs, etc. for Free plus extra money for mods and gas for wheeling trips. It also allows me to donate product for event raffles that raise money for groups like BRC, CA4WDC, etc.

PM me if interested in doing the same!

We also recycle everything we can and use the money for our trips and/or a night out for dinner.

No, I work at the one on SR 193 by I-15 and Hill AFB.

If you need something that is expensive come see me and i will get you 20% off. You will know I am there iff you see a lifted blue '00 jeep in the lot that needs new rims cause the backspacing is all F&*$#@ up.

I am seelling the rims if anybody has a jeep that isn't lifted (or anything else with 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern) and wants nice rims.

Yes but hit up Dan at gerroffroad.com for a great deal as he is a paying sponsor of the NAXJA forum. He is doing his cost pricing right now so it is as good a deal as you can get w/out becoming a dealer or preferred customer.

John is right I am doing a at cost deal for Naxja, the bigger order you buy (I did a order for 3 xj's a yj a dodge 3500 deisel and a ford ranger and f-150 this week and a little left over for side jobs) The better the deal really is. PM or email me Ill set you up with the best prices you can get!

For my side jobs I really have 3 businesses Gerroffroad encompases 2 online jeep parst and personal jeep maintenance/repairs the third is a advisory position for the local CSD's maintenance department all of which take time and money to run but give me safe hobbies and enough extra cash to take the wife out and support good causes on top of jeeping and breaking air compressors :twak:

after i got laid off and was out of work for a few weeks, i hit up the junk yards. i went in search of parts to resell. it takes a little $ to start, but can be worth it. the problem was finding more stuff to put on my jeep than to sell. cant go wrong with $5 hood vents, $100 disk brakes, $3 1.5" greaseable lift shackles, $10 taurus fan or a $47 stock tire carrier. i ended up finding some things to sell as well like the famed underhood light, dash clock(s), tc skid, tail light and a ford 8.8. on the 8.8, i offered to weld on customer supplied shock brackets and spring perches for a small additional cost to users and free welding for member and supporters.

I also sell some of the stuff I take off my jeep. so far i have gotten rid of a center consol, LCAs, tc crossmember and some other odds and ends. If i take a part off to upgrade, I offer it up for sale to help recover some of the cost of the upgrade (like the LCAs after going long arm, same with tc drop).

you could always befriend some rich old woman and become her arm candy and get some extra $$ that way:heart:. or, you could be gay for pay.....:spin3:
