so im gettin a good deal on a stock 96 xj for 1000 bux. im gonna be saving money from my job to pay for that then i am gonna be selling my old xj for maybe 1500 to my buddy who wants an xj. then i was going to use that money for a RE 4.5 superflex lift with springs and shocks and a SYE and use an old front shaft for it. im just wanting to know if that would be a good idea or not because i dont wanna have to put anymore time into a POS that needs alot of work that i can not afford at the moment. i just thought i would ask

Only $1K? Take a good long look at it before handing over any cash.

my buddy looked at it all it needs is a fender and header panel. and he said it has somewhere around 140K on it. he has the parts just no time to fix it so he is just going to sell it.

Certainly seems like a decent plan if the '96 is mechanically sound. Can't go wrong with the Super Flex kit and the SYE.

the 4.5 SF kit is a great kit. Two suggestions upgrade shocks and if you can afford it get the drop brackets the ride is much better with them. or save a bit more coin and just do the LA setup.

I've never really believed there was a huge performance difference between the drop brackets and long arms. I've never complained about the amount of articulation from my rig and the RE adj. CA's and drop brackets. Certainly has nice road manners and no death wobble or bump steer.
I will admit that long arms do work well as rock shelf sliders where my DB's dig in and hang up occasionally. It just doesn't happen enough to justify ditching 'em for a LA setup.
Just my $.02.

Look under the new JK........My wife has an '07 and it rides like a Lincoln......to my surprise  the lower control arms are LONG, damn near as long as my BDS LA's for my XJ !!!! Go figure.......from the factory now!!
FWIW...I will have a RE 4.5 w/ adj uppers for sale real soon (used and reasonable).

LOL! You crack me up sometimes Keifer......
Not too many folks get excited about buying a car that's "been hit pretty hard"...... but you apparently can't get enough of 'em! :D
If you get this 2nd XJ.... let's see, you'll have one hit hard in the front corner, your other rig is hit hard in the rear...... I've got a rolled one and a t-boned one I could sell ya, ya wanna collect the whole set?
:D

Keifer...... seriously brutha..... that XJ needs more than just bolt on body parts. The unibody area (cowl and lower pilar where it becomes the firewall - especially where the door hinges are) is fawked up. You'll never get a door to bolt back on correctly without having to get the area under all that damage straightened.
For $1000...... you're getting screwed. It's worth that much or more in parts possibly, but to fix that to where a windshield will sit back into it's channel and seal, and to get a door to align and seal..... it's gonna need time on a body shop's frame jig.
Walk away unless he'll take less. Seriously.

i am gonna try and talk him down to maybe 800 im not too worried since it's gonna be a trail rig anyway plus my friends dad owns a bodyshop and i could get it fixed in a few weeks

Awrite then. If you have a body guy willing to take care of you and fix that, then you're ahead of the game there. Just wanted to be sure you didn't get in over your head again with hidden unibody damage like your other rig.
$800 is fair. Not great, but fair.
