I know this means about nothing to most of you :D
But my girls have been working thier arse off in thier quest for a League Championship!
(and so have I, thus making it hard to get much wrench or wheel time, bee oches!)
So.....
I'm going to post up our scores after each match here.
You can all ignore it if nesc.!!!! :moon:
Last night we started our quest against Lutheran HS.
Lutheran upset our arch rivals last year in the playoffs (Julian HS)
We anticipated a real tough match.....
We won
25-7 25-13 and 25-5. (an old fashion ass whuppin')
Season record so far......1 and 0

Just got back from our second match of the season.
We Won!
25-22
25-10
26-24
That last game was a barn burner. Went on and on and on....we thaught we had it won but a 'net' call was made against us....
But, we still managed to regain serve and finish them off.
We played Mountain Empire.
Season recored;
2-0!
I gotta' go now, heading out to Devil's Canyon with Ryan and few others!

Okay, I knew this one was going to be a challenge, we were going up against one of the pre-season picks for the State Championship.
I wanted my girls to see what 'real' V-Ball looks like :D
We lost...that was no suprise, but what was a suprise was
how well my girls did!
18-25
12-25 (momentary lapse of reason!)
18-25
I know the scores don't look so good, but we challenged them at all
points of the game. They couldn't dominate in any perticular disipline.
Our defense matched thiers, no question.
Our service, although not on par with thiers, was still exceptional.
They took us on offense. We had no answers for all they had. What can I say?
I am incredably proud of the team!
Tomarrow....another top notch school. Heck we can only learn from playing the best!

Heavy sighhhhhh.....don't know what got into my girls. :dunno:
We scored more often then we did yesterday.....but we played like crap!
We didn't have 'it' tonight.
Couldn't challenge them on service....why? :dunno:
We couldn't defend thier middle attack....why? :dunno:
My setter just couldn't make consistant sets....why? :dunno:
Oh well.....they ( Christian HS) are not in our league or division. So the
loss won't hurt us....it just hurts to lose like that.
Maybe.....ah...I'll just work on it tomarrow....

We needed a match like the one we had today!
25-6
25-8
25-7
We played the home match against Lutheran. My girls could do no wrong.
It got the point that my servers missed just to exstend the match (Some people might not like the idea of deliberate misses, but even the other team deserved some extra playing time, they drove two hours to play us!)
Interesting side note;
The Union-Tribune (SD's news paper) listed the top three teams in each division in todays paper...all but division 5. They only listed Tri-City Christian as the no.1 team but no 2 or 3.
I am trying to be careful not to overestimate our team but, we could be ranked no.2 right now. Our main competition for that spot has been struggling recently and might have lost it to us. :dunno:
Our only losses were to the no.1 ranked team and another team that is neither in our league or division.
The rankings as I see it;
1. Tri City
2. Calvin Christian or us
3. as above
4. Escondido Adventist
5. Julian.
It will be interesting to check this post at the end of the season to see how accurate it is.

Okay...I can honestly say that we should be ranked #2 now.
Calvin is big time stuggling....against bigger schools and against mutual opponents..
But, in the bigger picture there is no difference between #2 and #3. They would meet
in the playoffs in the semi-finals. #4 would meet #1. and nobody wants to play
#1 prior to the championship game.....(my GAWD and I counting chickens here? We have not
even started league play yet!!)

Just got back from our first tournament of the year......
WE WON!!!!!!
So this does prove even blind monkeys find a nut every now and again!
It didn't start off so well. We went thru pool play with an even 5 and 5 record. That gave us a low seed going into elimination play.
We faced the #3 seed..and won!
It didn't get any easier, the next round we faced the #1 seed...and won.
Then the #2 seed...and won.
We took out the top three seeds during elimination play!
We then faced the #4 seed in the championship match...best 2 of three.
We lost.....the first game....then took a nice lead early in the second game and won. On to the final game, play to 15 and win by two....
We were tired and didn't want to play any bonus points...we won 15-8.
and the trophy was ours!!!
I'm beat...got up at 4:30am and spent the day stressing...I need some beer!

We played our away game against Mt. Empire last night.
25-16
25-7
25-13
We played without one of my starters due to injury (and she WAS NOT happy about missing a start.) Her replacement played very well for someone tossed in with only one day of rotation practice prior to the match.
Next tuesday we start league play....wish us luck!

1000th post, when I started thinking about Tuesday....first league game....against probably our toughest competion for the title. Damn....
You know I started coaching this team from scratch seven years ago. None of us had a clue about how to play this game.
It was two full seasons before we managed our first match win!
(Sept. 24th against Mountain Empire @ 4:32pm '02. :D)
And we have managed to improve every season up to this point...

25-16
25-6
16-25 (The girls just decided not to play this game for some reason!)
25-15
That second game was perfection. The best I have ever seen my team play.
NO unforced errors. That is a first.
That third game....I don't know what happened....everyone made one mistake after another. Come to think of it, the last time my girls played great ball, the next day they played horrable....I wonder what that means? :dunno:
But what the heck, we won :D

League game #2...league win #2!
We played West Shores HS today.
The toughest team we have faced in some time.
25-16
25-22
25-15
Although the score might not show it, West Shores played tough. They just had way too many errors. Rotation errors cost them at least six points (thats a shit load of rotation mistakes.) They tried to muscle serve us...fine...go ahead...we can defend most any serves, but you put your own team at risk for service errors...they lost a boatload of points to missed serves. :D
We fell behind in two of the three games...by as many as six points.
My girls are looking more like champions each match!
Next match is against Tri City Christian....we will get stomped but we have a few tricks up our sleaves for them this time....after Tri City....we play our arch rivals...Julian!
I'll keep you posted

Another day, another WIN!
We are closing in on finishing our first half of league play. So far we are 3-0.
With wins against West Shores, Calipatria and today Vincent Memorial.
Todays scores;
25-13
25-21
25-12
My setter and two primary attackers had a field day. With a slow start from last years MVP it looked like it might end up a tight match. But the setter took over and gave her a break and let her regain some composure and after that....we were unstoppable. Although the second game ended up tight I don't think the girls felt threatened at anytime.
Next week we have three matches that could decide the seeding spots for the playoffs. We will play are arch rivals Julian (who is having an off year) then start the second half with a league match against Calipatria. On friday we will host Calvin Christian, our rival for the #2 spot in the playoffs!
Wish up luck!

So...we finished the first half of league play today.
Very important match. Win and we go undefeated half way thru, lose and
we open up the competition to at least one other team.
Well.......we won!
Are arch rivals, Julian came to visit us in our gym. We started off showing them why we are the odds on favorite to win it all, we won the first game
25-14. Then....for some reason...the girls started to make mistakes....added a few more gray hairs and we lost 20-25. I told the girls that champions come back after a game like that and leave no doughts that the loss was a fluke. We win the third game 25-8!! Arse wuppin' time again. We head into the fourth game and build a 11-2 lead....only to manage to let Julian back into it. Why????? :dunno:
We managed to regroup and finish off a tight game with a 25-21 win.
So here are the scores.
25 14

We just finished a non-league match against Calvin Christian...and lost.
For those of you who know the game..check out these scores..
25-23
25-27
23-25
25-27
Thats right, we scored 25 points in three of the four games and still lost!
The winner of this match ended up with the upper hand for the seeding meeting...damn....:bawl:
No game was decided by more than the minimum....
This game will be the buzz of Div 5 V-ball for the next week.
What bugs me is...we lost and we shouldn't have. We played better most of the match, I know that sounds like sour grapes but...damn...we had them and let them off the hook so many times...this will be a hard one to get over....at least the girls have the weekend to get over my being pissed off at them and letting them know it!

Thier only loss during league play was against us. The winner of this match had the best chance of getting a league championship.
WE WON!!!
We had a tough first game.
We won 26-24

Now Johnson Valley is in danger of getting the axe from my scheduel....
I just looked at the playoff scheduel for girls volley ball...
First round Nov. 8th....probably not an issue, we should have a first round bye.
Second round (quarterfinals) Nov. 10th. No problem there.
Nov. 15th semis. We should make it here...
Then comes the problem....
Nov. 18th.....Finals!
As I have mentioned before, I think that we have lost the #2 seed in the playoffs but we still have a chance at beating the probable #2 and playing for the CIF (San Diego Section) Championship.
And it doesn't get any better for my plans after that. Both teams that play for the SDCIF Championship move to the Suthern Regional bracket for the State Championship...that starts....on Monday the 20th...and I'm suposed to be playing in the sand dunes out at Gordon's Well all that week..
:rattle:
All this is working on an assumption of winning out...:dunno:
Oh well...what can a coach do?
Tomarrow we play an away game out in Calexico. Win this and we win the Citrus League Championship...and we should do well there.

We have one more league match, Thursday night at Julian HS.
Seeding for the playoffs will be done on Saturday....

This mornings paper has all the seedings from yesterdays meeting.
We got the #3 seed. Not what we hoped for but what I thaught we had earned.
Strange procedure this year. The coaches hadto submit what they thaught the seeds should be as well as supporting information. When I submitted mine I left open the possibility of us (Borrego Springs) getting the #2 seed. This while losing to my suggested #3 team. They didn't fall for it!
It looks as though they just read my seeding chart and used it with us getting the #3 seed and Calvin getting the #2.
What does it all mean?
Tri-City Christian get the #1 seed, first round bye, then play the winner of San Pasqual and Foothills Christian.
Calvin gets #2 and will play the winner of Calvary Christian vs. Julian
We have #3 and will play the winner of SD Academy vs. Escondido Adventist.
West Shores will play Midway Baptist in the second round, winner probably will play Tri-City.
What does THAT all mean?
We will probably play Calvin in the semi-finals and the winner will probably face Tri-City for the San Diego Section Championship!
It also has me playing during the Goatfest weekend!
The team bettor make it worth it!!

Today are the semi-finals. We win, we play saturday for the CIF Championship. We lose, we go home......
I have spent the last week talking to the girls about the fact that no other public school has ever played for the championship and that no other public school has ever qualified for the regional championship....and it wasn't sinking in. They just were not motivated by the uniqueness of our postion. But when I started talking to them about the media coverage of tonights game and about the press conference tomarrow for the winner of tonights match they lit up! The 'oh my gosh, how will my hair look?' comments, the 'will my aunt Ester be able to see me on TV?' kind of thing...and they came alive during practice last night....
Although as a coach, I would hope the sport aspect of the match would be motivation enough I am still happy that I found something that will help them turn up thier game just that little bit...
Wish us luck.
I'll let you know tonight or tomarrow morning how we did.
