It could happen....

1) Install new Chromo Heims - Front Finished - not sure I need to do the rears just yet.
2) Grind off un-wanted rear/front trackbar mounts - cut off - need a little more grinding - not sure if this is going to be done on not - not really needed.
3) Install new limit straps to the shock mounts rather then chains to little tab mounts - finished and looks good.
4) Get on board air working - finished - lots of little leaks in the cage - not sure this will get fixed at this time - at least I have air.
5) Clean up XJ - Took out about 15lbs of trash/dirt/oil/rugs/carpet - looks a little better but could use more.
6) Fix steering - still needs done - have all the parts - nothing major will have this finished next week.
7) TEST RUN - need to make sure everything is ok before the big trip.

More issues found - more issues fixed.

1) ARB solenoid - Leaking badly - ARB compressor cycling every 10sec - Fixed - Now it cycles about every 1min or so - But I am getting 90 weight back up through the solenoid. I will possibly work on this later.
2) Heat in the engine compartment - New Vents (louvers) arrived yesterday - They will be installed tonight.
3) Hood Pins not fitting correctly - Fixed
4) Tires are way unbalanced - Dynabeads ordered - Will install them once they get here.

My list went from this-

Replace the AC condenser and charge the AC

Remove, repair, and re-install the front D44 ARB

Re-engineer the front RE drop bracket/control arm suspension into a mid-arm 3-link.

Remove Tomken rock rails, cut out rockers and weld rails in place, incorporating new front leaf spring mounts for longer leafs.

New 35" tires, or maybe open another can of worms and go 37s...

Give the trailer a once-over.

To this-

Install the CB in the wife's jeep and drive to Moab

well since i'm selling the XJ this weekend, and the new ZJ isnt gonna wheel, i need to get the 5.0L powered CJ5 done or i'm stuck riding beotch in my buddy's JK...

whats left...
1. remove and fully weld the cage i built last week.
2. run new full-length dual exhaust inside the frame, must work in conjunction with #3
3. built new front driveshaft that works with #2..
4. go back to stock mechanical linkage since my "great idea" hydraulic master just didnt work out as planned.
5. rebuild the dirty old Carter AFB in hopes of maximizing the fuel economy.
6. wire the damn secondaries shut to help with #5.
7. figure out how the hell i'm gonna carry a spare tire.
8. install the twin-sticks on the D300.
9. wish for some sort of divine intervention to create super-short overdrive trany that is 16" long and will fit into my 81" wheel-base, so i dont have to deal with the 4 speed trany i'm stuck with.

all that has to be funded around the dreaded "back to school" shopping thats looming... (maybe i should just buy back my old white XJ i drove west 2 years ago.. )

wtf am i thinking???

A couple things that would have helped me my first trip would have been to buy a good map of Moab for when I wanted to explore the town on my own, and to have asked ahead about campgrounds in the area and if possible. Slickrock is our official headquarters, but I hated the one night I stayed there. Too much street noise and absolutely no room between neighbors.

Went wheeling last weekend. Now I have a high steer arm to fix and a pulley noise to isolate. Otherwise, it's ready to go. Oh, and change the oil in the truck.

I got 4 of those S10 Blazer things that Sequoia and Karstic were talking about. There were 4 S10 Blazers in a row at the Milliken yard yesterday, so I pulled all four. Each vehicle only has one.

I may go back to the OC yards tomorrow to see if I can find a couple more.

I bought some 2000lb rated d rings from Jegs.

Where did you mount them? Did you pull the carpet to drill?

johnnyc
September 22nd, 2008, 16:58
Carpet? What's that? :) I don't have any carpeting in the cargo area. So it was easy to do the drilling.

I put two in the rearmost corners of the floor. Then two where the rear seat used to be. Those are so I can strap down my three mini Rubbermaid containers.

IslanderOffRoad
September 22nd, 2008, 17:06
Haha, lucky.

I guess I'll pull the carpet to drill mine then cut holes in it for the d-rings to come out.

Thanks for the offer guys, but the car is already paid for...

Plus I'll need it for ground transport during the week, shopping for the show & shine dinner, and probably Sat night dinner too.

Last time I went as a passenger, and while it wasn't a total bummer, Keith & Kevin were early-risers who brought morning coffee back from town... there were times (like a couple dinner times) when I was semi-stranded at the campground.
