I know several of you already know but we are in a desperate need of a roof on our house.

Since money is a little tight we are going to do it our selfs and I am desperately looking for some good help.

The plan is to do it over the 16th and 17th of Sept.

I can't offer much for the help but I Can cook each of you up a HUGE steak and buy you the beverage of your choice.

TIA.

Yes...a couple of compressors would be great. I have a line on one roofing nailing gun now. A couple more couldn't hurt.

Also if anyone has a line on shingle removing tools.

My old roof has to come off.

lesslimited
August 30th, 2006, 18:42
My nailer will be heading there next week.

For removal, depending on how well it was fastened, the good ol' pitch fork or baling fork will work pretty well.

I've done more of these jobs than I wanted to, and the one thing I've found is that you can't have too many people. Depending on the size of the roof, 6-8 people up there, and at least 2-3 on the ground is the minimum, to avoid having to work too hard trying to get it done in two days.

Have fun, and be safe party1:

I don't have a roofing gun. I've got 5 framing nailers.....Anyway, I could send a compressor and some hoses with someone from down this way. You have 220? You could use my garage compressor, It can run more guns than you can fit on that roof and it's portable too. :D

Square shovels and a heavy snow shovel would take it off. Those roof removal tools that look like a spork are the ticket though.

I'll check if I can get a loaner gun or two from my tool guy.

What size hoses? I could send up a big 3/8" with big fittings. A small hose won't run much volume if it's over 100'....or I could send up the Emglo wheelbarrow. It could handle it also.

Are you going to be replacing any Sheathing?

SCW
August 31st, 2006, 07:35
Are you replacing any wood? Pitchforks work pretty well for removal, cheap too. Thoses spork things are great too, but limited use once you finish the roof. Make sure you plan on plenty of attic venting, most roofs die an early death because the get so hot above and below, it will help your cooling cost to improve venting too. Depending on the age and condition of your plumbing jack you may want to replace those while your up there.

I might be able to help out some, I don't get to commit to anything more than a few hours ahead these days.

Vents are a huge problem my house has now. It doesn't have any and it gets HOT.

I want to vent the crap out of it...Hoping it might help keep the house cooler in the summer too.

Since it's a complete re-roof, peak vents are the way to go.....not sure the cost of peak VS turtle vents between every other truss.

There's also some good membranes out for eves and valleys that prohibit leakage through ice damming. Are you doing a complete tear off to wood?

Yup. Complete tear off. I have no choice. It is in really bad shape. It should have been replaced about 4 years ago. I still don't know why it doesn't leak.

Yeah peak vents are on my list. I got enough money to buy higher quality materials and I NEED to vent it well.

Why do you NEED to replace it if it doesn't leak at all? The insurance told me I NEEDED to do mine 5 years ago. I got new insurance instead of a new roof.:D It looks like it needs it, but it still performs like it's supposed to.

x2, if you want to wait for a time when you have extra money, go ahead. You should have lots of warning when you need a new roof, especially all the way down to trusses.

If your worried about shingles you can have as many as three layers of shingles on a roof, I've done quite a bit of roofing in Layton (just up the street from you in fact) and many homes have multiple layers. You can still whack in some roof vents, either turtle or ridge (I'd use both). You may want to take a trip into your attic and see if there is any water damage. I'd only replace damaged stuff, if there is some. We just moved into our house here and there are a lot of damaged shingles and quite a few that are curling up, so I went up in the attic and looked things over pretty well, I think it's OK but needs a new layer, maybe next year.

I'll still try to help if you want to strip it bare, I just don't think you really need that kind of expense/work.

Oh it needs it...its only a miricle it doesn't leak. The shingles are so curled and crusty you even look at them and they break off. Every time we even get a breeze we have tons of grit and parts of shingles that end up on our cars.

It is in totally bad shape. So bad that there is no way I could ever put a new set of shingles over the old ones.

Like I just said in the last post. I don't have a choice to strip it bare. There is no way to lay shingles over the roof that is on it now.

I have a very good friend who used to own a roofing company with his dad. He looked at it and couldn't figure out why it doesn't leak either.

if its that bad, please get into your attic and look at the wood. if areas show signs of weakening or rot, make it known to those working. my family put a new roof on my grandparents place last summer and my aunt fell through. she was extremely lucky she didnt get her arm ripped all the way off. the bone in the shoulder broke and cut all the tissue under the skin and the skin was the only thing holding her arm on from what i understand.

Um, she won't be helping on Ryan's house will she? :D My folks own a home in Stansbury Park that had a leaky roof. One day this summer the swamp cooler came crashing through the roof into the hallway. Lots of work on that house, but still not as bad as ripping your arm off. Well.....when the swamp cooler line broke and we lost the whole ceiling in the kitchen I spent quite a bit of time in the attic.

My house basicly has two pitches. The one above the bedrooms slopes east and west and the roof there is still in pretty ok shape.

The pitch that is above the kitchen and living room is the worst part and when I was in that attic everything really looked pretty good.

I was just on the phone with Ryan and with the weather and all...as of now everything is still a go....and yes, the tarps may be in place for the rain, but we will kinda play it by ear and let everyone know what is going on.

As for when were starting....I'm not sure on Friday. Ry is going to be going around and gathering stuff. Were picking up a dump trailer for the shingles to be dumped into but can't get that until Friday between 3 and 5. The supplies will be delivered on Friday and yes, we will be carrying them up by hand. Ryan has a friend, Tyson, who is going to be helping on Saturday, that I talked with last night and he said that thier really not that heavy....I hope he knows what he's talking about. Then Saturday, whenever you can come is fine. Any help is better than none. I'm guessing that we'll probably be up and going between 8 and 9, pending the weather, and then the same again on Sunday.

This is all that I know as of now. Ryan is on his way to Vegas and should be back sometime tomorrow. I'm sure that we he gets back and we make all of our plans he'll post them up here.

Thanks for everyone that has volunteered to help, like I said, any help is better than none.

On the phone again with Ryan and he said to let everyone know that tomorrow is the cut off day. If the weather is looking like it's going to be really bad then we'll just call it off.

And I was also informed that the shingles WILL be delivered to the roof...woohoo!

Just a thought- having done several roofs in the spring time. If it is put off to another weekend you likely won't have as much help (this is the only weekend in Sept I could help, I'm sure other are scheduled as well). Also, with several guys and nail guns we could have the old roof torn off only minutes ahead of the new going on. Even if the rain is a drizzle we should be able to stay on top of it pretty fast. Just getting new tar paper on will make it watertight temporarily.

I guess my suggestion is to work through a drizzle and get it done this weekend. I have a hat and a jacket- :D I doubt it will rain hard for very long.

Mrs Moab

I just talked to Ryan on the phone. Were NOT going to be doing the roof this weekend. In talking with our shingle man we have decided that it's too much of a risk with the weather. So we'll plan on doing it sometime in mid-October.

Thank you to everyone who has willingly said that they would help....but any help in October will still be nice if you can.

Stewie has busted his butt up here. I think that he and Chris are the only ones that have been here every day. I can't even say that about Ryan.

You guys ROCK!
