View Full Version : An idea for a competition......:D

I feel I'm getting left behind. All those Atlas and 37's and 44 fronts and 60's and and and....
I need to feel more secure...
So I propose a competition.
It would be composed of three rig teams.
Each team would have rigs with different sized tires. One with 33's, another with 35's and yet another with 37's. This could be modified to 31, 33, 35 if warrented.
Timed runs thru sections.
It would be up to the teams who would go first. Time would start as the first Jeep entered the section and would stop after the last one made it thru.
This could be something like short sections or up entire trails. I.E. From the botton to the top of Clawhammer or break it up into smaller sections.
This would allow us lowly small rubber types to reconnect with our friends who no longer wheel with us because we just would slow them down!
What do you think?

If they think I'm just going to slow them down, I don't want to wheel with them anyway; timed pity event or not.

About a month ago, from bottom to top, less the delays waiting on some people on 33s to get unstuck and Ron's mechanical delays at the beginning. I bet Ron and I did it under 10 minutes. Now put a timer on it, wow, that'll be pretty damn low considering we were trying to take the hardest line the whole way up.

I be almost willing to bet Paul and Dave can do it under 8 minutes.

8 Min, does that mean we need to change a tire as well ?

On a serious note, it's tough, I know. I wanted to do all the stuff out there with what I had, but the only takers seemed to be the 37's and up crowd. Irregardless of what Tim says, it gets really old fast (for both) trying to follow 37's around, forget 40's.

Last year we set up a couple of *theme* runs at my local club. The first one was Claw, 33's only, no body damage. It turned out to be a hit, even with some equipment and driver experience restrictions. We did a Sledge 33's and 35's run too, more restrictions, and a body damage likley clause, and it was still a hit.

Turns out, the guys on 37's want to go anyways, and they know what to expect up front. We sent them up first, and they have the option of running at their own pace, and deciding for themselves where and when and if to stop.

The last one was last month, and it was more of a free for all, but it's still understood up front what to expect.

I still like to run on 33's out there, it's just getting a matched crowd together here to do it with on a regular basis. If there are a few folks that want to do it, let's set it up. I have been getting more than a few backchannel hits on going out, so I know there's some folks that want to run harder stuff.

PS: Rock Racing on 33's and 35's at JV sounds really expensive. :D

None of those are too exspensive!
:D
But.....I never thaught of it as a 'pity' event.....
I'm thinking on going ahead with some sort of limited class (tire size) event in January. Maybe second weekend of the month.
JV
One day.
Maybe an entry fee and 100% payback to the top three teams.
Min. of six three man (woman) teams.

Rick R

and Bent....nobody wants to wheel with anyway! :D

What do you all think? Heck, maybe Cal's ride will be running by then!

I may have to start drinking for that :laugh2:

Check with goatman and see if he wants to add it to the Nov run. That should be the largest turnout of the year.

My kind of wheeler! :D
Goatdog has his 'Goatfest' event the weekend before Thanksgiving out in Johnson Valley.
Unfortunatly I will never be able to attend. I spend that entire week out in the sand dunes at Gordon's Well. What can a guy do???:dunno:
BTW Isn't it kinda' a haul from Nebraska?

FWIW, JV is probably the most difficult trails in the country. Stock rigs don't generally make it 10 feet. Clearance is unbeleivably important.

Please do the research before you make the trek cuz this is not a trial system you can give hell to. It will give YOU hell.

Ahhhhh...the 'why' of Gordon's Well. :D
You know I have been building dune buggies longer than I have been wheeling?
Much longer!
I never understood why any able bodied person would rather go four wheeling than dune cruising...at least until I actually went four wheelin myself!
I guess a simple answer would be...THE NEED FOR SPEED!!
G-forces are cool too!
Don't get me wrong, I love thrashing my Cherokee, its just I NEED what my buggie gives to me!!
Ten straight days in the dunes, 55 gal. of race fuel and several cases of ICE FRIGGIN' COLD CORONA!!
Its a sand thing, you wouldn't understand...

There are many, many, many writeups and vast amounts of pictures on teh intranet. The killer JV setup is 33's and a 30/35 combo. :firedevil

Lots of variables can be thrown in. things like vehicles. is it strickly XJ? or is it something that can branch out? is THe only major clasifiaction defined by tire size? or are there axle restrictions in place as well? How about drawing teams from a hat? you enter as an individual and your placed on a team either by chance or by a "judge".
I like the idea and concept. maybe something to really work out. Now that mainstream Rock Crawling is going stadium and man made closed courses there needs to be something new for the trails. Sledge can be done in under 4 minutes. instead of racing up the trail, maybe a predetermined time limit. Winning team is the team the crosses the finish line not the fastest but closest to the "ideal" time.
any trail can hold an event.

I'm working out some details in the rules.
I think it could be open to 'other' four wheelers. With bonus points for Sammies!
A blind draw has its merits.
One idea has 'time added' when all three rigs are at a complete stop. Think about that one for a moment....the idea being that it would require some sort of teamwork.
I'm not sure the 37" crowd would bring much to the table here....they could bomb the run, then scurry down the trail to act as spotter. :dunno:
Or have them run third in the group....hmmmm....I like that one.
I will work on some deep thaught.
:D
And I might just run out to JV on that Saturday of Goatfest.
